To all whom it may concern I Be it known that I, DAVID C. HALE, Jr.
a citizen of the United States, residingy a Cincinnati, in the county of. Hamilton and State-of Ohio, have invented certam new and useful Improvements in Garmelit-Press ing Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to tne letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to garment pressing -machines and comprises ACertain improvements of the garment pressing machine shown and describedl in m pending application, Serial No. 779,428, iled July 17, 1913.
The present improvements relate to various parts, as Will be hereinafter described, and have for their object'to increase the eiiiciency.' and effectiveness of the machine.
Before entering into a detailed description of the same, reference is irst made to the accompanying drawings which are illustrative thereof and of which- Figure l is a front elevation; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the buclesupporting table; Figs. 3 and 45, respectively', are elevations of sleeve and shoulder pads or bucks; Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view of the presser head on the line 55 of Fig. 1; Fig. 6' is a vertical sectional view on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5; Fig. 7 is a cross-sectional View of the presser head on the line 7-7 of Fig. 5; Fig. 8 is a top plan View of the clamping rims through means of which the cloths are held over the perforated plate; Fig. 9 is an enlarged sectional View on the line 9 9 of Fig. 8; and Fig. 10 is an enlarged sectional detail of one of the jets through which water is sprayed or inducted to the steam generating spaces in the head.
In a detail description of the invention, similar' reference characters indicate corresponding parts both in the description and the accompanying drawings.
It will not be necessary to malie more than a brief reference to various parts of the ma` .chine which are not directly involved in the present improvements because of the fact detailed description of that my pending Yapplication contains a more such parts. Fundamentally, the machine consists of a base from which extends laterally an overhanging arm 2 to the overhanging end of which a presser head is swiveled. 'The presser head in the present instance contains various improvements which render it necessary to present various details which are shown on F ig. l2 of the drawings. Also, a well known feature of the machinel is prescnt in the former application, is the bucksupporting table 3, which is subjected to a horizontal movement as Well as a vertical movement, the latter movement being that which raises the buck in contact with the presser head. In my former application, theptable 8 is provided with a stationary buck which, owing to its being stationary, is required to subserve the pressing purposes of all parts of the garment. In my present improvements, the buck 4, which is substantially the same in outline as that shown in my former application, is mounted on a head or projection 5 rigidly attached to the table 3. The buck 4, it will be observed, is sub` stantially the length of the presser head which appears above it in F ig. l and, owing to a swiveled connection between said buck 4 and the head 5, the buck may be turned at an angle to the plane of the presser head by unscrewing a set screw 6. Such position is shown in Fig. 2. This change in the posi'- tion of the buck 4 enables a sleeve buck 7 or a shoulder buck 8 to be mounted on the table 3 without interference with the elongated buck 4. For this purpose a socket member 9 is secured in the table 3 to receive the Shanks 10 of either of the bucks 7 and 8 as shown in Figs. 3 and 4;. This facility for placing different sizes or shapes of bucks in operative relation with the presser head greatly increases the eiiicieney of the machine by enabling the operation of pressing a garment to be done much more expeditiously and satisfactorily. Such being thecase, it has not been deemed necessary toI` illustrate the pump mechanism. As shown in Fig. 6, water is introduced from the pump through a nozzle 11 communicating with a pipe 12 through which two parallel pipes 13 connect. The pipes 13 lie on each side of an electricallyheated unit 14 which is covered by a copper casing 15 so that the water disi charged into the head is prevented from coming into direct contactwith the core or heating unit 14. The inner ends of the pipes 13 are provided with nozzles 16 which spray the water within the space occupied by said pipes through jet openings 16. The 'base member 17 of the presser head is provided' with longitudinal and circumferential anges 18 to w 1ch,al wire plate or screen 19 is secured by screws in any suitable manner. These two cloths are stretched taut against the screen plate by having their marginal edges secured between a'frame which surrounds the outer side of the base plate 17. This frame consists of a. male and female member and respectively. The fonner member' 1s provided with a tapered projection 4d with teeth 47 projectedA therefrom at suitable points, While the member 45 is provided with a channel 48 into which the tapered projection 46 extends. The edges of the fabric are held between the projection 46 and the channel portion of the frame 45. The two members constituting said frame are shown in Fig. 8. They are held temporarily together, when not in position on the presser head, by eccentrics 49 which are mounted in opposite ends of the female frame 45 and may be turned to enter adjacent recesses in the ends of the male frame member 44. The cloth frame as a whole is held in eccentric heads 40 on the shoulders 50 formed at the proper points in the male frame member 44.

In a machine of the type specified, a presser head comprising a base plate having down-turned marginal flanges, and Vertical flanges projecting from the upper side thereof, heating units secured to the lower sideof said base plate, a perforated plate secured to the down-turned flanges of said base plate, a top (plate mounted on the vertical flanges of sai space above thebase plate, said top-plate having flanges projecting'into said space and terminating above the base plate, a heating unit extending between said llanges, water induction/pipes lying between said flanges and said heating unit, a series of steam nozzles mounted in' the base plate and projecting into the space between the base' and top plates, space-filling bars supported base plate and providing an inclosedv on the base plate Within said space having recesses within wlnch said nozzles, l1e, and'a casmg mounted above said Abase plate, over y thetop plate, substantially as specified.

In a machine of the type specified, a presser head. comprising a ba'seplate havin a down-turned marginal lia/nge,land vertica flanges projecting from the upper side thereof, heating units mounted upon said base plate; a perforated platemounted .below saidheating units, a top plate mounted'upon. the vertical flanges of the base plate vsaidv top p plate having downwardly extending flanges which separate the space between the top' 'plate and the base plate, a series of steam nozzles mounted in said base plate and extendmg into the spaces'onthe outside of said flanges, space-filling bars within the spaces on the outside of said flanges, a heating unit lying longitudinally within the space.between said flanges, Water induction pipes lying parallel with said heating unit and be'- tween saidzheating unit and the flanges of the top plate, a' cover supported on the base plate, a fabcinclosing the perfo q ited plate, a frame consisting of two members lbetween which the edges of said fabric are clamped, and means on the casing for holding said frame in position, substantially as specified.
