Abstract

535,294. Hand-irons. SCHREYER, E. P. Sept. 26, 1939, No. 26640. Convention date, Oct. 3, 1938. [Class 138 (ii)] An electric iron is constructed with a water container 14 secured by bolts 21 between a sole plate 10 and the cover 17 carrying the handle 24 and provided with transverse baffles 18 which in conjunction with baffles 26 in the cover prevent water passing with the steam to a chamber in the forward part of the container from which a tube 28 conveys steam to a hollow screw 30 with lateral apertures 34 whereby the steam escapes into a channel 11 between the container and plate through a series of loops 11a in the plate to the work. This arrangement permits the iron to be stood on its rear end for steaming articles on an adjacent support. The heating element 13 is arranged in another space between the container and plate with an over lying perforated sheet 13a of asbestos. The space between the baffles 18 may contain metal wool to prevent swinging of the liquid, and when tilted up on its rear end on a support 39 into position for steaming articles on an adjacent support only steam will pass from the holes 11a. To prevent overheating in case the container becomes dry one of the plugs 37 for the plug connector has an insulating section 40 normally bridged by a bi-metallic strip 41 which in case of excessive heating of the iron fails to bridge the section 40.
