Application December 13, 1933, Serial No. 702,129 5 Claims. (Cl. 122-271) This invention relates to boilers and particularly to a construction and arrangement for generating and delivering steam for use in heating systems or for other purposes.
One object of the present invention is to provide a boiler in which steam is quickly generated.
Another object of the invention is to provide a. novel construction and arrangement for superheating the steam and delivering it for use in a substantially dry condition.
Another object of the invention is to provide a structure wherein portions, of the device may be disassociated from other positions thereof for making necessary repairs or for other purposes without disturbing the remaining portion of the structure.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel construction in boilers, made up principally of pipe fitting of standard construction, to facilitate the repair and. replacement of various portions of the boiler structure, asmay be required.
A still further object of the invention is to improve. devices of the character described in sundry details hereinafter referred to and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
One embodiment of the present invention is shown for illustrative purposes in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view, partly in section, of av boiler construction illustrating an embodiment of the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a transverse elevational sectional view through the structure (illustrated in Fig. 1, and taken substantially as indicated by the line 2-4 thereof; and
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional elevational view taken substantially as indicated by the line 3-3- of Fig. l.
The illustrative embodiment of the present-in-- vention as shown in the drawings, comprises a housing 5 formed preferably of refractory material and providing a fire box and heating chamber 6 within its interior, and having passages 1 and 8 formed preferably adjacent the lower portion thereof, the said passages being arranged in substantially parallel relation at opposite sides of the fire box, shown in the present instance as being provided with a grate 9 mounted in the housing, the passages 1 and 8 terminating adjacent their rear ends in diagonally extending portions H communicating with a stack or stack connection l2 for discharging the products of.
. combustion from the device.
Mounted in the housing S'preferably at opposite sides of the heating chamber 6 formed therein, and adjacent the passages l and 8, are a pair of headers formed preferably of standard pipe fittings and indicated as a whole by the numerals 5 l3 and I4, the forward ends of the headers being connected by means of conduits l5 with a pipe l6 for supplying water or other heat exchange medium to said headers.
Mounted respectively at opposite sides of the in heating chamber 6 formed within the housing 5 and communicating with the headers I3 and M, are a plurality of vertically disposed water containers ll having off-set portions I 8 positioned inwardly with respect to the main body portion of 15,
the water container and extending outwardly of the housing 5, preferably through the upper or top portion l9 thereof.
The water containers including their off-set portions are of substantially like construction, 20
and. it is thought that a description of one will sufl'ice as a description of all of the containers. and, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, the upper and lower ends of the main'body portion of the: container are provided with apertured.
closure members 2| and 22, respectively, (Figs. 1 and 2) in which are mounted the upper and lower ends, respectively, of a flue 23 extending longitudinally through the main body portion of the container and communicating at its upper 30 end with the heating chamber, and at its lower end with one or theother of the passages 1 and 8 for conducting the products of combustion in a downward direction from the heating chamber to the passages! and 8, and thence through the diagonal portions I l of the passages to the stack connection l2, thusproviding additional heating surface for the'water within the containers II,
it beingunderstood that the water in thecontainers may be maintained; at substantially the level indicated to provide a steam chamber adjacent the upper ends of. the off-set portions iii of the water containers.
Mounted above the heating chamber preferably outside the. housing 5, is a collecting drum or steam. dome! 24, and for conducting steam from. the respective chambers formed at the upper. endsof-the. off-set portions 3 of the water containers tothe steam dome, a plurality of conduits, indicated'as a whole by the numeral 25, and including coils 26 positioned'in the heating chamber, are provided, one end of the conduits 25. communicating with the upper ends of the ofi-set portions. I8 of; the. water containers through. apertured closure members 21, and the Y opposite end of the conduits communicating with the steam dome 24, the conduits communicating with the water containers at one side of the heating chamber being adapted to enter the steam dome at the side thereof opposite the last mentioned containers, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
It will be observed from the foregoing description that the present invention provides a construction and arrangement, wherebyheat is applied not onlyto the surface of the-water containers H, but also may be transmitted to the fluid therein through the fiues 23 in a manner to quickly generate steam in the upperends of the off-set portions l8, and that-by reason of the coils 26 in the conduits beingpositioned within the heating chamber, the steam in passing from the off-set portions l8 to the steam'dom'e 24, is super-heated in a manner to deliver substantially dry steam. to the dome for whatever use the steam may be employed, thereby increasing the efficiency of the boiler construction. It will be observed also that by reason of the headers, water containers and conduits being constructed or standard pipe fittings, the various portions of the structure disclosed may be readily removed for repairing, and may be readily replaced with new fittings when necessary.
Obviously, the present invention is not limited 5 to the precise construction and arrangement shown and described, as the same may be variously modified. Moreover, all the features 01' the present invention need not be used conjointly, as the same may be used to advantage in variously different combinations and subcombinations.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: I
1.An apparatus of the class described comprising a housing having a fire box and heating chamber therein, said housing having a pair or passages positioned respectively at opposite sides of the fire box, a stack connection communicating with said passages, a pair of headers positioned respectively at opposite sides of the fire box, a plurality of independent water containers operatively related to and extending upwardly from the respective headers, a plurality of fiues extending through the respective water containers, said fiues communicating at one of their ends with said heating chamber and at their opposite ends with said passages for conducting the gases of combustion iromrsaid chamber to said passages, a steam dome positioned above said heating chamber, and a plurality of conducting means positioned in said chamber and communicating at their opposite ends with the respective containers and with said dome for conducting steam through the heating chamber in its passage from the containers to the dome.

An apparatus of the class described comprising a housing having, a fire box and heating chamber therein, said housing having apair oi passages positioned respectively atiopposite sides or the fire box adjacent the lower portion of the housing, a stack connection communicating with said passages, a pair of headers positioned respectively adjacent the respective passages at opposite sides of saidfire box, means for supplying water to said headers, a plurality of spaced independent water containers operatively related to and extending upwardly from the respective headers, a plurality oi fiues extending longitudinally through the respective water containers, said fiues communicating at one or their. ends steam in its passage from the containers to said 0 dome. 3. An apparatus of the class described comprising a housing having a fire box and heating 7 chamber therein, said housing having a pair of passages positioned respectively at opposite sides 1 of thefire box adjacent the lower portion or the housing, a stack connection communicating with said passages, a pair of headers positioned respectively adjacent the respective passages at opposite sides of the fire box, means for supplying .0
water tosaid headers, a plurality of spaced vertically disposed independent water containers communicating with and extending upwardly from said headers and having offset portions extending outwardly of the housing, a plurality 01 5'8 fiues extending longitudinally through the respective water containers, said fiues communicating at one of their ends with said heating chamber and at their opposite ends with said passages for conducting the gases or combustion go from said chamber to said passages, a steam dome positioned above said heating chamber outside said housing, and means including a plurality of coils positioned in said chamber and communicating at their opposite ends with the a respective containers and with said dome for conducting steam through said heating chamber to super-heat the steam in its passage Irom the containers to said dome.
4. An apparatus of the class described comprising a housing having a fire box and heating chamber therein, said housing having a pair or passages positioned respectively at opposite sides of the fire box adjacent the lower portion or the housing, a stack connection communicating with 5 said passages, a pair of headers positioned respectively above and adjacent the respective passages at opposite sides of said fire box, means for supplying water for said headers, a plurality of spaced vertically disposed independent contain- 5 ers communicating with and extending upwardly from said headers and having ofiset portions extending outwardly above said housing, a plurality of fiues extending longitudinally through the respective water containers in spaced relation thereto, said fiues communicating at their upper ends with said heating chamber and at their lower ends with said passages for conducting the gases of combustion in a downward direction from said chamber to said passages, a steam dome positioned above said heating chamber outside said housing, and means including a plurality of coils positioned in said chamber and communieating at one or their ends with the respective upper ends of the offset portion of said containers and at their opposite ends with said dome for conducting steam through said heating chamber to super-heat the steam in its passage from the containers to said dome.
" 5. An apparatus of the class described comprising a housing of refractory material having a fire box and heating 'chamber therein, said housing having a pair of passages positioned respectively at opposite sides of the fire box, a stack connection communicating with said passages,
a. pair of headers comprising standard pipe fittings positioned respectively at opposite sides of the fire box, a plurality of independent water containers comprising standard pipe fittings and having main body portions operatively related to said headers and having ofi-set portions extending outwardly of said housing, apertured'closure members secured to the ends of said main body portions and to the outer ends of said ofi-set portions of the water containers, a. flue extending longitudinally through each of said body portions and having its ends open and positioned in the apertures of the members secured to said body portions for conducting the gases of combustion from said heating chamber to said passages, a steam dome positioned above said heating chamber, and a plurality of conducting means comprising standard pipe fittings and including a plurality of coils positioned in said heating chamber, said coils communicating respectively at one of their ends with said off-set portions of the water containers adjacent the apertured closure members secured thereto and at their opposite ends with said dome for conducting steam 10 through said heating chamber to super-heat the steam in its passage from the containers to said dome.
