HENRY M. RUBEN, 013 ALLINGTOWN, CONNECTICUT.
EXERCISING APPARATUS.
Application filed. Jufly 12, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY M. Renew, a citizen of the United States, residing at Allingtown, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Exercising Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in
Fig. 1 a plan view of the exercising apparatus, constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 a side view of the same.
Fig. 3 an end view thereof.
This invention relates to ilnproven'ient in exercising apparatus, and particularly to apparatus on which a person may recline, with provision for resisting movement of the arms and legs, the object being provision of resistances which may be adjusted to the Size of the person using the apparatus, and the invention. consists in the construction as hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a table 5 suitably supported by legs 6, and on this table are cushions 7 which may be adjusted on. the table for the convenience of the person using the device, and preferably one of these cushions 8 is mounted upon a vertical spindle 9, by which that cushion may be adjusted to positions above the other cushions, and preferably a spring 10 will be arranged on the spindle to provide a yielding bearing for the cushion 8. Mount ed in the legs or support 6 is a longitudt nally-arranged bar 11, on the upper edge of which are adjustably mounted brackets 12 and 13, adapted to be clamped to the bar by set-screws 14. Each bracket is provided with a bearing 15 for a horizontally-arranged spindle 16 carrying vertically-arranged pads, one 17- at the foot and the other 18- at the head of the table. On the spindles 16 are springs 19, by which the pads are forced inward. On each side of the table are arm-supports 20, on which cushions 21 are placed, the outer ends of the arms being supported by legs 22 preferably Serial No. 651,032.
hinged to the arms so as to be folded beneath the table when not in use. Each of the arms carries an adjustable bracket 23, like the brackets 12 and 13, and each. of these brackets supports resistance-pads 24 like the pads 17 and 18.
in using the apparatus, a person lies upon the table, with the feet against the foot-pad 17, the cushions on the table being adjusted for the convenience and proper support of the body. The arms may then be raised. over the head and against the pad 18, so that, in stretching, the patient presses against both the pads 17 and 18, these pads being arranged in position to give the nec essary resistance. For further exercise of the arms when they are stretched out at the sides, the fists are pressed against the pads 24, which are adjusted to offer the desired resistance. The body may also be held at proper position on the table, so as to allow the legs to be straightened out against the resistance of the foot-pad 17. I thus provide for the proper exercise of the arms and legs, these movements bringing in certain muscular actions of the body.
I claim:
1. An exercising apparatus, comprising a table, a bar arranged longitudinally therewith, brackets adjustably connected with said bar, and resistance-pads mounted on said brackets.
2. An exercising apparatus, comprising a table, resistance-pads arranged at the head and foot thereof, arm-supports on opposite sides of the table, said supports each carrying brackets supporting resistancepads.
3. An exercising apparatus, comprising a table, a vertically-movable cushion thereon, a longitudinal bar arranged centrally of and below the table, brackets adjustably connected with opposite ends of the said bar.
arm-supports on opposite sides of the table. brackets adjustably mounted on said sup ports, and resistance-pads mounted in all of said brackets.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HENRY M. RUDEN. Witnesses:
