Be it known that CHARLES A. FETTERS, citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrella Attachments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

The invention relates to umbrella attachments and has for its object to provide a device Which may be attached to one of the ribs adjacent the end thereof and passed around the ribs adjacent their ends and hooked to the ribs to which the device is attached in such a manner that the ribs will be held close to the umbrella stick, thereby preventing flapping and spreading of the umbrella when not in use. Also to so construct the device that when not in use the free end thereof may be hooked to the umbrella rib within the cover thereof.

A further object is to provide the device with a small container in which may be placed the name and address of the owner of the umbrella.

Vith the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a conventional form of umbrella and 2 the ribs thereof which are disposed adjacent the umbrella stick 3. It has been found that unless the ribs 2 are held in some manner that they spread incident to the flapping of the umbrella cover. To obviate this objection the chain 4: is provided. 5 of one of the spring arms .6 of a rib receiving member 7 and between the arms of which the rib is frictionally held. The end 8 of the chain 4. is provided with a hook 9 adapted to be hooked over the rib 2 on which the fastening device 7 is disposed, that is after the chain 4 has been passed around all of the ribs. It will be seen that the chain will hold the ribs 2 in close engagement with the umbrella stick 3. However when the chain 4 is not in use the hook 9 is hooked on the rib at a point spaced from its end and therefore will not hang downwardly when the umbrella is in use.

The identification container 10 comprises a threaded cap 11 formed integral with the fastener 7 and the hollow body portion 12 which is threaded at 13 into the cap 11. Disposed within the cap 11 and held therein y means of the ends 14 of the flexible member 15 which engage in apertures 16 is a paper holding device 17 between the spring arms 18 of which a piece of paper may be held within the owners name and address thereon, so that the owner may be easily identified and located. It will be seen that when the cap 11 is unscrewedthat the paper having the owners name thereon will be removed from the chamber of the body por tion 12. i

From the above it will be seen that an umbrella rib holding device is provided which is simple in construction, may be easily applied and that in case of loss of the umbrella the owner may be easily located.

The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is The combination with the adjacent ends of the ribs of an umbrella, of means for holding said ribs adjacent each other, said means comprising a flexible member adapted to encircle the ribs, a rib clasping member carried by one end of said flexible member, a rib engaging hook carried by the other end of said flexible member, one of said rib engaging members being. formed integral with a threaded cap, a paper clasping member carried within diametrically disposed recesses in the threaded cap and a threaded container threaded in the cap and housing the paper clasping member.
