w. s. MURDOCK ROTARY TOOTHBRUSH Filed Dec. 14, 1922 Patented Dec. 2, 1924.
WALTER SCOTT. MURDOCK, OF GALVESTON, TEXAS.
ROTARY TOOTI-IBRUSH.
Application filed December 14, 1922. Serial No. 606 825.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WALTER S. MURDooK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Galveston, in the county of Galveston, State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Rotary Toothbrush; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to rotary tooth brushes, and has for its object to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction, the parts reduced to a minimum, thereby allowing the device to be cheaply manufactured and sold, and allowing the device to be quickly disassembled for cleaning purposes.
A further object is to provide a rotary tooth brush, said tooth brush comprising an elongated handle, through which handle a rotatable shaft extends. One end of the shaft is provided with an integral crank whereby the shaft may be rotated and the other end threaded into a brush carrying ferrule, in such a manner that the ferrule and brush carried thereby will be rotated.
A further object is to provide a removable brush shield, one end of which extends around the shaft and the other end is disposed beyond the outer end of the brush.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawing described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of the rotary tooth brush.
Figure 2 is an enlarged vertical longitudinal detail sectional View of a portion of the tooth brush.
Figure 3 is an end view of the handle member, and the ferrule showing the brush removed.
Referring to the drawing the numeral 1 designates the elongated handle member of the device adapted to be grasped by the operator for steadying the device during a tooth brushing operation. Rotatably mounted in a bearing 2 extending longitudinally through the handle 1 is a shaft 3, one end of which is bent to form the integral handle 4 adapted to be grasped by the other handle of the operator for rotating the shaft 3. By forming the crank 4 and the shaft 3 from a single piece of material, it will be seen that the crank and shaft may be cheaply and easily constructed from a piece of heavy wire. The shaft 3 extends beyond the inner end of the handle 1 and is threaded as at 5 for the reception of the ferrule 6 which is threaded thereon. The ferrule 6 may be formed from copper or any other material, however when the shaft 3 is rotated, it rotates with said shaft. The ferrule 6 is provided with an angular recess 7 which receives the angularly shaped portion 8 of the brush 9 and causes said brush to rotate with the ferrule 6 and shaft 3 during a tooth cleaning operation. To protect the jaw or the inside of the cheek of the user the shield 10 is provided, which shield has one of its ends provided with an aperture through which the shaft 3 extends and with a lug 12 which is received in an aperture 13 in the end of the handle 1, said lug forming means for preventing rotation of the shield with the shaft 3. The other end of the shield 10 is provided with an ear 14, which overlies the end of the brush and protects the mouth of the operator from damage incident to the rotation of the brush.
From the above it will be seen that when the ferrule 6 is unscrewed that the brush and shield 10 will be removed from the handle and shaft, thereby allowing the parts to be easily cleaned. The ear 14 prevents axial movement of the brush when the same is assembled.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is A tooth brush comprising an elongated handle member, a rotatable shaft extending axially through the handle, a ferrule threaded on the inner end of the shaft and having its inner end spaced from the adjacent end of the handle member, a brush detachably connected to the ferrule and rotatable therewith, a shield located to one side of the brush, an inwardly extending ear carried by one end of the shield and disposed between the ferrule and the handle member and In testimony whereof I have signed my through an aperture of which ear the shaft name to this specification in the presence of 19 extends, means carried by the ear and 00- two subscribing witnesses.
operating with the handle whereby said shield will be held against rotation, the outer WALTER SCOTT MURDOCK. end of the shield being provided with an WVitnesses: inwardly extending ear overlying the outer WORTHY BOYD,
end of the brush. BEN WV. RUNDELL.
