Description

UNITED STATES PATENT EECE.
WILLIAM H. BRITTON, OF MILFORD, AND OLNEY S. THAYEB, OF BELLING- HAM, MASSACH USETTS; SAID THAYER ASSIGNOR TO SAID BRITTON.
iMPRovEMENT IN cLAMPs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l5 [,680, dated June 9, 1874; application filed May 15,1814.
To all whom it may concern: Y
Beit known that we, VILLIAM H. BRIT- TON, of Milford, county of Vorcester and State of Massachusetts, and OLNEY S. THAYER, of Bellingham, in the county of Norfolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Clamps, of which the following is a description sufficiently full,
clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is an isometrical perspective view of our improved clamp; Fig. 2, a view of the sliding` bracket Fig. 3, a view of the coupler or ferrule; and Fig. 4, aview of the bolt.
Like letters indicate corresponding parts in the different gures of the drawing.
Our invention relates to that class of clamps which are used by manufacturers of doors, sashes, and like articles in setting the joints which have been glued, or prior to pinning or fastening the frame together; and consists in a novel construction and arrangement 'of the parts, as hereinafter fully set forth and claimed, by which a cheaper and more effective im ple ment for this purpose is produced than is now l in common use.
In Fig. 1, A is the body or beam of the clamp; B D, the brackets; G, the slide; F, the lever, and L the ferrule or coupler. The brackets B D are provided with runlets U and projections b b, Fig. 2, which projections slide in the grooves J J, Fig. 1, and operate to keep the clamps upon the face-plate T. The lever F is provided with the cam-shaped end E and serrated edge Gr, and is hung in the bracket D upon the journals R. The slide C has a tail piece or slotted guide, I, which works on the stud i; and there is a link, H, attached to the bracket D, and through which the lever G passes. The ferrule L is provided with side apertures M I), and also with outwardly-projecting anges Q Q, which enter the grooves J .J when the thimble is in use. The bracket B has a stud, K, projectingafrnm its runletface U, which stud drops into the arcrtugres S S inthe facepl. ed?, as the bracket is moved along the plat ,the bracket being loosely fitted to the plate for this purpose, the bracket l) having a similar stud, and being held upon the plate in a similar manner. The object of the ferrule L is to enable the clamp to be lengthened to any desired extent by coupling on another beam similar to A, by means of the pins N, Figs. 1 and 4, which fit the apertures M l?, Fig. 3, and extend into the apertures S, when in use, thus holdingv the beams together.
From the foregoing the nature and opera tion of our invention will be readily obvious to all conversant with such matters.
The bracket D being arranged secured on the beam A, as shown in Fig. l, the bracket B is moved along the face-plate a suflicient distance to admit the article to be clamped or acted upon between the face of the slide C and the face of the bracket B, and the stud K allowed to drop into 011e of the apertures S. The lever G is then depressed, bringing the slide C forcibly against the article to be clamped, the lever being held down by the link H in a manner 'which will be plainly apparent without a more rexplicit description.
By removing the bracket B, and arranging the bracket D centrally on the beam A, the clamp may be used for a lifting-jack.
The clamp will also be found useful for many purposes other than those specified.
It will be obvious that any number of apertures may be made in the plate T; also, that any number of the beams may be coupled together by thimbles or couplers L, the bracket B being placed in a proper position upon one of the beams before they are coupled;
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is- 'lhe extensible clamp described, consisting of the brackets B, having the stud K, the bracket D, provided with the slide G and serrated cam-lever F, and the beam A, having the grooves J J and apertures S S, combined. to operate substantially as and for the purpose specified.
WILLIAM H. BRITTON.
OLNEY S. THAYER.
