IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED CANES AND STOOLS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 151,585, dated June 2, 1874; application filed December 11, 1873.

To all 'whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN H. GRAY, of Jamestown, in the county of Chautauqua and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oombined Camp-Stool (or Chair) and Cane; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a combined cane and camp-chair, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure l is a side view of my invention closed up as a cane, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same opened out as a campchair.

In the construction of my invention I take a piece of timber, of suitable dimensions for a walking-stick, and divide the lower two-thirds thereof lengthwise into three sections, A and B B, cutting one outside, and the center sections B B at the upper point of the divisions. The upper third of the stick is then bored out, producing a cavity, C, of suflicient dimensions to receive the cloth-seat D. At a point about one-fourth of the length of the stick from its lower end the three sections A and B B of the stick are attached by means of an L-shaped hinge, a.. One arm of this hinge passes through, secures, and pivots the two short sections B B of the stick; and the other arm, which is twice as long, passes down into a groove, b, in the section A, and is secured and pivoted therein by a metal pin. The seat D is made of a triangular piece of canvas or other suitable cloth, and attached by its points, one at the top of each of the sections B, and the other or remaining point to the section A, near the bottom of the cavity C.

When the sections A B B are spread out, as

shown in Fig. 2, a camp-stool is formed, which is easily converted into a cane by drawing the seat D up into the cavity C by means of a cord, d, or spring, which act will bring the sections B B into the same position as before being separated and spread out from the section A.

The upper ends of the sections B B are secured in this position by a sliding band, E, moving upon the hollow part C of the cane, and their lower ends are secured by means of a ferrule, G. This ferrule is attached to one of the sections by means of a wire or other staple, x, which passes through a hole or slot in the ferrule, and its ends fastened in the section. The ferrule Gis held in position over the ends of the three sections, when closed, by means of a spring-catch, y.

I am aware that an article that can be converted at will from a cane to a cam p-stool, and vice versa, is not new; and I do, therefore, not broadly claim such as my invention.

Having thus fully described my inventjon, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letteis Patent, is-

l. The section A provided with the hollow part O, in combination with the short sections B B and seat I), substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.

2. The L-shaped hinge a, in combination with the sections B B and the section A, having the groove b, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.

3. The combination of the sections A and B B with hollow part O and sliding band E, for the purposes herein set forth.

4. The combination, with the sections A and B B, of the ferrule `Gr, staple w, and springcatch y, substantial] y as and for the purposes herein set forth.
