Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM J. OALAIS, OF WILMINGTON, N. O., ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHTv TO WILLIAM H. JAMES AND JAMES ANDERSON, OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-SEAT ARMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 151,470, dated June 2, 1874; application led September 5, 1873.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, W. J. CALAIS, of the eity'of Wilmington, State of North Carolina, have invented an Adjustable Car-Seat Arm, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to connect or disconnect the car-seat arm A (refereneebeing had to the accompanying drawing) with back T and arm-rest V easily and rapidly, without the removal and replacement of screws, and consequent scratching and defacing of parts and loss of time.
Figure l shows a broken plan of adjustable arm A; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section of arm A, connected with back T by spring-bolt B, and with an arm-rest, V, by spring-bolt O. Fig. 3 shows an outside View of arm A in place in socket-plate m, by which it is connected with back T; also, an inside view of arm A, connected with plate n, by which it is attached to arm-rest V.
g represents the spring of bolt B. f represents the spring of bolt C.
To disconnect arm Afrom back T, draw out spring-bolt B by its head, so that its smaller diameter L can pass out through slot w.
To disconnect arm A from arm-rest V, draw out spring-bolt C by its head, so that its smaller diameter av can pass through slot finto larger hole c, through which the head of bolt C can pass.
When arm A is connected with arm-rest V, by giving bolt C a half-turn. pins is turned away from slot o, by which means bolt C is held irmly in place, and cannot be Withdrawn. A half-turn of Vbolt B removes pin p from slot 1', for a similar purpose.
I claim as my invention- In combination with the adjustable arm A, having slots w and e, the 'movable bolts B and C, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
W. J. CALAIS.
