ARTICLE-SECURING MEANS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented July 30, 1918.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES H. SAGER and CLINTON M. SAGER, citizens of the United States, and residents of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Article-Securin Means, of which the following is aspeci cation.
The present invention relates to article securing means and more particularly to the type employing a flexible connection which may be readily passed about robes, garments, or objects, or through openings in objects, to prevent the movement or removal of such objects, one of the purposes of this invention being to make it possible to use with the flexible connection a padlock or other looking device acting to make effective any amount of the length of the flexible connection, so that objects of different sizes and shapes may be secured. Another purpose of the invention is to provide an article securing device of the class described in which the flexible connection with the locking device may be used with or without an attaching bracket mounted on a fixed part. A still further purpose of the invention is to provide a construction in which the attaching bracket will have its securing screws covered by a portion carried by the flexible connection so that the removal of the screws is impossible when the article securing means is in locked condition.
To these and other ends, the invention consists of certain parts and combinations of parts all of which Will be hereinafter described, the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figures 1 and 2 are two side views of the invention at right angles to each other;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the attaching device; and
Fig. 4 is a-perspective view of the member to which one end of the flexible connection is secured.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates the flexible connection which, in this instance, is made from a plurality of links, one end 2 of each link acting as a shoulder so that the connection as a whole has a plurality of spaced shoulders functioning in a manner to be set forth.
One end of the flexible connection is secured to one end of a member 3 which is in the form of a bar. This bar or member 3 has its oppositeend rovided with an open- I the opening 4 to one side of the flexible chain and secures the latter in the lateral portion 5 of the opening 4, so that the article is firmly held by the chain.
To the end of providing for securing the flexible connection to a fixed part, an attaching bracket is provided. This bracket, in this embodiment, comprises a U-shaped member having its connecting portion 7 pro vided with screw openings 8, and its arms 9 provided with alined slots or openings 10. The screw openings receive screws 11- for securing the bracket to a fixed part, while the openings 10 receive the bar 3, the bar, when passing through the two arms, lying over the screws 11 in order to prevent the surrepe titious removal of the screws when the bar 3 is locked to the attaching bracket. The bar 3 is held against sliding movement on the bracket in one direction by the padlock, and in the other direction by the-shoulder 2 on the link which is secured at the opposite end of the bar.
Many and various uses of the invention will suggest themselves. For locking the steering wheel of an automobile the bracket 7 may be secured to a fixed part of the vehicle, and the chain may be passed through the steering wheel. As a robe securing device for automobiles, the bracket may be secured to any desired fixed part of the vehicle and the chain may be drawn tightly about the robe and secured in this position. Automobile tires may be held in the same manner. The chain, bar, and padlock may be used independently of the attaching bracket and one use for this combination is to pass the chain about a fixed part, or through an opening in such part and about the article to be secured, or through an opening in such article. A traveling bag can be secured to a seat in this manner while the owner is in the smoker or the dining-car.

WVhat we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. An article securing means comprising an attaching bracket having an opening therein, a flexible connection, a member to which one end of the flexible connection is secured, passed through the opening in the bracket and having an opening through which the flexible connection is adapted to be passed, and means for securing said flexible connection in said opening and at the same time to the bracket.
2. An article securing means comprising an attaching bracket having an opening and screw holes by which the bracket is secured to a suitable support, a member adapted to pass through the opening in said attaching bracket and to cover said screw holes, said member having an opening with a reduced portion, and a flexible connection formed with a plurality of spaced shoulders secured to said member at one end and adapted to pass through said opening to enter the reduced portion in order to interlock with said member and to hold said member interlocked-With the bracket.
3. An article securing means comprising a U-shaped attaching bracket provided with screw holes by which it may be secured to a suitable support and also having each arm provided with an opening, a member eXtending through the openings in the two arms and over the screw openings, said member having at one end an opening with a reduced portion, a flexible connection secured to the opposite end of the member and provided with spaced shoulders, said eonnection being adapted to pass through the opening in themember and to move laterally into the reduced portion, and a padlock fitted in said opening in said member to hold the connection in the reduced portion.
