NEW JERSEY. I
POOL-CHALK HOLDER.
Application filed July 15,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that CHARLES J. Moses and DOUGLAS VAN BLAnooM, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Bogota and Hackensack, respectively, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pool-Chalk Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient means for holding chalk blocks or cubes such as are used in chalking the tips of cues used in billiards and pool, under conditions tending to economize in the use of the chalk and to preventthe surreptitious or accidental removal or re tention of the chalk by the players, the loss and breakage of the cubes and other improper use thereof while afiording ready access for the purpose of chalking the tips to the best advantage; and with this object in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure l is a sectional view of a chalk holder embodying the invention.
Figure 2 is a side view of the same.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the base plate.
Figure 4 is an end view of the holder.
Figure 5 is a detail view of the chalk block seat.
The device consists essentially of a guide 10 and a chalk block seat 11 having a threaded stem 12 fitted in said guide and yieldingly held in its normal or advanced position by a coiled spring 13, to the end that when the tip of a one is pressed against the exposed side of the chalk block indicated in dotted lines at 14 and held in the seat, and the one is moved longitudinally to press the tip against the chalk block, the chalk seat with its stem recedes in the guide against the resistance offered by the spring 13, and at the 7 same time the chalk seat with the chalk block held thereby is turned by reason of the threaded engagement of the stem 12 with the guide 10, so that the action between the chalk block and the one tip is the same as that ordinarily effected by the pool or 1 billiard player in chalking his cue in that, the chalk block being placed against the tip, one is turned relative to the other to effect an adherence of the chalk to the tip, Obviously the operation of 1921. Serial No. 485,134.
forcing the chalk block backward against the'resistance offered by the spring 13 maybe repeated as often as required to effect the desired application of chalk to the tip, but the turning of the block during the repressing movement serves to effectually chalk the tip with an evenness or regularity which is an improvement upon the ordinary method wherein the chalk is held in the hand.
The rear end of the stem 12 is provided with a head 15 consisting of a disk for limiting the forward or outward movement of the stem, and the guide 10 is extended to form a supporting tube 16 in which said head operates.
The device as so far described obviously may be arranged either in the vertical or pendent position as indicated in the drawing or in the horizontal position as may be found more convenient for the operator, and to afford the necessary stability or strength the tube 16 may be carried by a plate 17 from which extends an annular brace 18, to
constitute a pedestal, and the edges of this pedestal may be fitted in suitable guides 19 carried by a base plate 20 secured to the ceiling or wall by means of screws 21.
The chalk seat preferably consists of a plurality of spring fingers 22 adapted for respective contact with the side surfaces of the chalk block as indicated in Figure 1, so that the chalk may be inserted and removed with facility while the accidental displacement thereof is prevented by the spring ac tion of the fingers.
Furthermore to protect the chalk from dust and also to guard against the removal thereof from the clamp forming the seat, except by authorized persons, a forwardly expanded guard 23 may be threaded or 0th erwise fitted upon the outer end of the pedestal and may be provided at its outer end with a shield 24 of conical form having a central opening 25 of a size sufiicient to admit the end of the cue. The conical form of the shield serves to guide the one tip into the opening which is in alignment with the end of the chalk block.
Therefore in operation in order to chalk a one tip it is only necessary to insert the tip end thereof into the guiding shield and advance it against the resistance ofiered by the actuating spring, without turning or otherwise manipulating the cue, and therefore 5 claimed as new and useful is:-
A chalk holder comprising a casing which is cone-shaped at its opposite ends and provided at one end with an interiorly located concaved shield having a central opening, said casing being provided at its opposite end with a centrally disposed tube, a stem having screw-thread engagement with the tube and provided with a head which is housed within the tube, a chalk block seat carried by the stem and disposed 1 between the tube and the shield, and a coil spring interposed between the inner end of the tube and the adjacent surface of the seat and normally holding the seat spaced from the tube.
