EMPROVEMENT lN TEMPORARY BINDERS;

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 511,427, dated May 26, 1874; application filed April 14, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALFRED 1 1201;, of the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have in- .vented an Improvement in Temporary Binders, of which the following is a specification:

My invention relates to that class of letterfiles in which papers are confined between two boards, one having projecting pins and a central screw, and the other having holes for receiving the said pins and screw, the latter being provided with a nut for securing the whole together; and the object of my invention is to atford facilities for the ready removal of the upper boardan obj eet which I attain by making therein slots adapted to the pins a a and screw B, as shown in the perspective view, Figure 1, of the accompanying drawing, so that, after loosening the nut D, the upper boards can be at once withdrawn, in the manner illustrated in the plan view, Fig. 2.

The boards A and A are made in the usual manner and of the ordinary materials, the lower board A being made stiff throughout, and the upper board having a longitudinal flexible portion, 00, so that it can be raised for the examinations of the letters. Two pins, a a, are secured to the lower board, as usual; but I prefer to bend the sharp-pointed upper ends of these pins in the manner shown, so that, while they can be used to pierce the letters, if the latter be held in a proper position for the purpose, the sharp points cannot pierce the hands. The screwB is also secured to the lower board in the ordinary manner; but the upper board, in place of the usual holes adapted to the pins and screw, has simple slots (1 d and 6, so that, instead of resorting to the tedious operation of entirely withdrawing the nut D, for the purpose of removing the upper boa-rd for the introduction of letters, all that is necessary is to simply loosen the screw and then slide the upper board in the direction of the arrow.

Although I prefer the inclined slots, it will be obvious that they are not essential to my invention, for they may be arranged at right angles to the rear edge of the board.

Two or more clamping-screws, B, with corresponding slots, may also be used.

I claim as my invention The combination, in a letter-file, of the lower board, provided with stationary pins and one or more screws, and an upper board having open slots adapted to the pins and screw, so

that the board may be applied to or detached therefrom by moving it laterally, substantially as set forth.
