Machin'es for Making Extension Table Tup.
UNITED STATES PATENT DEEICE.
ROBERT G. UTLEY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES H. FIERGE,'CHARLES H. GILMAN, .AND GEORGE W. TUTILE.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR MAKING EXTENSION-TABLE TOPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,193, dated February 25, 1873.
spects except width of every other board somade.
It is not designed to do the whole of the work of making the boards on this machine, but to correct all the imperfections that are unavoidable by the method heretofore employed. y
In the accompanying sheet of drawing, Figure l is a top view of my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view of'A the same.
A and A are forms corresponding in length and thickness to lone of the boards used for lling. They are of wood, but have pieces of metal fastened to their inner edges, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1. b b b are pins projecting from the metallic edge of the form A to engage with the holes in one edge of the boards to be operated upon. c c c are holes, shown by dotted lines, in the form A, and corresponding with the pins b b b to receive the dowe1-pins in the opposite edge of the boards.
g g g g are springs to push the boards awayV from the forms when the board is to be removed. d and d are pieces of woodor metal raised above the surface of the forms, forming guides against which the sides of the plane ulsnd to remove the wood above the forms may s 1 e.
Vhile it is held in this position the board is planed down until the side of the plane bears on the metallic edge of the forms A A The cutting-ed ge of the iron is kept from touching I the form by its sides bearin g against the raised gages d d, which are at a distance from the edge of the form just equal to the thickness of the wooden part of the plane outside the iron.
The ends of the board may be made to correspond with the form by any suitable means.
The board is removed from the machine by turning back the screws f, when the springs g g g g will push the board away from the forms.
lt will thus be seen that when any number of boards has been operated upon each edge of a board will be a perfect counterpart of every other corresponding edge, and that any boa-rd selected at random will match perfectly with any other and may be used in any table, thus rendering unnecessary any registry by numbers.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the forms A and A having pins b b b and holes c c c with guides d d, when operated in the manner and for the purpose specified.
R. G. UTLEY.
