Description
No. 897,964. PATENTBD SEPT. 8, 1908. J. DE JULIO. BRIDGE FOR GUITARS.
APPLICATION FILED FEB.19,1908.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN DE JULIO, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO MARY A. 1. DE JULIO.
BRIDGE FOR GUITARS.
Toall whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN DE J ULIO, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of N ewYork and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bridges for Guitars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this s ecification.
This invention re ates to new and useful improvements in bridges for guitars and the object in view is to produce a simple and efficient device of this nature, so arranged that the bridge may be adjusted for bringing the strings of the instrument in proper position with reference to the sounding board for the purpose of enriching the tone of the instrument.
The invention comprises various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accom-- panying drawing which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bridge of the guitar showing myinvention as applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the bridge of the instrument. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 2, and Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a bridge adapted to be fastened to a guitar in the usual manner and provided with apertures for the reception of the strings of the instrument. Said bridge has a longitudinal slot A formed therein, the end of which slot terminates in a circular outlined recess B, which has a lining D, preferably of metal. E designates a bridge plate which is positioned in said slot and over which the strings pass.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 19, 1908.
Patented Sept. 8, 1908.
Serial No. 416,762.
Said plate has its ends notched as at F, and G is a nut, the circumference of which is preferably cylindrical'to conform to the lined recesses in which it is positioned. Said nut has a lateral projecting lug G extending into said slot and adapted to be positioned in the recesses formed in said bridge plate. Each recess is provided with a similarly constructed nut, and each nut is engaged by a screw N.
O designates a washer, through which the screw passes and against which the head or shouldered portion of the screw is adapted to bear, as the screw is turned, for the purpose of raising or lowering the nut. As the edges of the lug bear against the marginal edges of the recesses in the bridge plate and as the screw is turned in one direction, obviously the bridge plate will be moved thereby accordingly as it may be desired to elevate the strings from the sounding board of the instrument. By turning the screws in the opposite direction, the bridge plate with the tension of the s rings bearing against the same will automatlcally return the plate to its normal position.
From the foregoing, it will be noted that, by the provision of the device shown and described, a simple and efiicient means is afforded for regulating the height of the springs from the sounding board of an instrument, whereby the requisite tone of the instrument may be obtained.
What I claim to be new is 1. In combination with a guitar, a bridge having an elongated slot therein, a bridge plate mounted in said slot, nuts mountedin recesses at the ends of said slot, a projection upon each nut adapted to engage the bridge p ate, and a screw passing through the nut, as set forth.
2. In combination with a guitar, a bridge having an elongated slot terminating in recesses, a bridge plate mounted in said slot and having notches in the ends thereof, a nut mounted in each recess and having a lateral projection engaging the marginal edge of each notch, a screw fitted to each nut, as set forth.
3. In combination with a guitar, a bridge having an elongated slot terminating in recesses, a bridge late mounted in said slot. the bridge and adapted to engage the threads and having notc es in the ends thereof, a of said nut, as set forth. 10 metallic lining for each recess, a nut mounted In testimony whereof I hereunto afliX my within each recess and provided with a latsignature in the presence of two witnesses.
5 erally projecting lug adapted to engage the JOHN DE JULIO.
marginal edge of the notch in the end of a Witnesses: bridge plate, a screw having a shouldered MICHELE PREJION,
portion bearing against the marginal edge of SALVATORE LATONE.
