Description
Patented May 26,1874.
V I M M EDWARD MAYNARD, OF NEIV YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO MELVILLE M. JOHNSTON, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN FILES FOR DENTISTS AND JEWELERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 15 1,413, dated May 26, 1874; application filed May 1, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD MAYNARD, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in the Handles of Small Tools, as Jewelers and Dentists Files, of which the following is a specification:
Hitherto it has been quite usual for artisans and others using very small tools, particularly files, to fit them into wooden handles; but these, besides being more expensive than the same tool minus a handle of some other material than that which composes the file itself, are often actually in the wa because of the increased size of the tool, and the small and cramped space in which the work is to be done-as, for example, when the filing is required on a tooth in the back part of a patients mouth. More frequently, in the practice of dentists, the file is used as purchased. (See Figure 1 of the accompanying drawing.)
In this case I have found, in practice, that the file, being very thin and small, is very difficult to hold firmly, and that it is liable to be deflected from its true course, because of the .difliculty of maintaining a firm hold of it through a long-continued operation.
To obviate this difficulty, I have taken these files of the various forms, as purchased, and, by subjecting their handles to some process of corrugating, as a blow of a drop fitted with proper dies, or a blow of a hammer, or the force of a press, I have corrugated the handle end, so that they can be firmly and easily, as well as conveniently, held between the thumb and forefinger. (See Fig. 2.) The same process greatly stiffens the handle.
This cheaply and entirely does away with all difficulty in holding these small tools, and with the necessity of putting a wooden or other handle upon them.
It is apparent that, though especially designed for small files, the same device may be applied to other small tools; also, that the essential ideaof the improvement is in corrugating the handle of the small tool, and that it is not essential Whether this corrugating is performed on the handle of the tool before it is cut or finished, or whether, the tool having been first made, the handle is afterward corrugated.
What I claim as my invention is- A dental or analogous tool with corrugated handle, substantially as above described, and for the purposes set forth.
EDWARD MAYNARD.
