To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osnrn SoHU'rrniv, a citizen of the United States,
residing at Los Angeles, in the county of LosAngeles a-nd State of California, have invented a new and Improved Oil Can, of which the following is a specification. v
The iuventionrelates to oil cans and espe cially to that type of oil can in which it is sought to provide means for effecting the same discharge of oil therefrom when the oil reservoir is full as when the same is practically exhausted.
In the usual manufacture of oil cans, especially those types wherein is provided a centrallydisposed exhausting tube, or in some types, a centrally disposed oil discharge effecting mechanism, it is practically impossible to effectively discharge oil from the can after the supply contained therein has become partially exhausted.
Therefore it is the object of, the invention to provide an oil can in which means is provided whereby the oil is effectively discharged therefrom at all times when a quantity of oil is contained therein, regardless of the smallness of the quantityor the of the cam during such discharge.
In addition to the before mentioned object, and also in combination therewith, it is an object of the invention to provide an effective means for discharging oil from the can under pump action. I
With the above and other objects in view that will hereinafter appear, the invention further resides in those novel details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all of which will be first fully, described, then be specifically pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the position accompanying drawing, in which:

In the practical development of my invention, I provide a main body portion or oil receptacle 1 which may be constructed in almost any shape desired but is preferably parts being shown at an oil discharge posiconstructed in the approximately -halfspherical form illustrated and to include the usual threaded filling neck 2.
A threaded closure cap 3 is provided and the same has formed centrally thereof and integrally therewith a pendent cylindrical portion 4 adapted to project down into the body 1 to form a pump casing or chamber, as is clearly illustrated in the figures of the drawing. The bottom end of this pendent portion is stamped in the manner illustrated at 5 so as to form a proper bearing for loosely holding the ball 6 so as to form a ball and socket joint. v I An inlet tube 7 is provided and includes an angled portion adapted to pass through the ball 6 for communicating with the chamber formed by the portion 4 in any of the positions which the tube may take in the manner later to be described. The inletend of the tube 7 is provided with a ball and check housing or inlettip 8 in which is provided a common type ofspring pressed bacl check valve ball 9.
By reference to the drawing, it will be observed that the center of the ball and socket joint 5+6 is at or adjacent to the center of the curvature of the dome portion of the body 1 and that the relation of the inlet tube 7 with the ball and socket joint is such that the inlet tip 8 lies at a point at the bottom of the reservoir formed by the body 1 when the can is in the normal position illustrated in Figure 1 and the tube is permitted to change its position in accordance with any position in which the can may be held while discharging the oil therefrom,

A pair of leather Washers 13 are secured to. the end of the plunger body '10 through the medium of the screw cap 1 14 which threads into the counterbore 15 formed in the body 10, the latter merging with the oil passage 16 formed inthat body and which is adapted to cooperate with a similar oil the spring 20 which is interposed between passage 17 in the cap 14 for permitting oil to flow therethrough from the chamber formed by the casing spring pressed ball valve 18 permits such oil passage.
When the plunger head 11 is forced inward, as is indicated in Figure 2, thereby forcing inwardthe plunger -13, the back check valve 9 serves to prevent the forcing of oil out of the chamber formed by the casing 4 while the valve 18 is forced open to permit the discharge of the oil contained in thatchamber out through the passages 17 -16 into and through the usual discharge spout 19, as is shown in Figure 2. When the head 11 is again released and forced outwardly by the spring 20, the valve 18 automatically closes, thereby causing the plunger 10-13 to draw in a new charge of oil into the chamber provided by the casing 4, the ball valve 9 being automatically opened during this action.
By reason of the ball and socket arrange ment 56 the inlet tip 8 will always gravitate so as to be at the point of greatest oil depth regardless of the position in which the can may be held, it being even possible for the tube 7 to gravitate to the approximate vertical position so that the oil may be removed from thebodyor oil receptacle 1 almost to the last drop and, by reason of the fact that a charge of 'oil is first drawn into the chamber formed by the casing 4 and then expelled therefrom, the removal of the oil from the body portion is just as eflective when the oil is partially exhausted from the body as when the body is full.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought the construction, operation and advantages of my inventionkwill be readily understood by those skilled in the artto which the invention relates.
What I claim is:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a fluid receiving body of substantally half spherical shape, of a spout for discharging the contents of said body, a rigid member though which fluid is adapted to be conveyed to said spout within the body,
said member including a fluid entrant end, means for universally-swivelly mounting said member within said body in coo erative relation to said spout so that sai entrant end may follow the curvature of said body in any direction and be automatically presented to the greatest depth of thefluid as the position of the body is changed in effecting the fluid discharge.
2. In a device of the class described, the
combination with a fluid receiving body, a
spout for discharging the contents of said body, a member through which fluid is adapted to be conveyed to said spout within the body, said member including a fluid portion 4 when the entrant end, a universal joint cooperatively connecting said member with said spout so that said entrant and may follow the contour of said body in any direction and be automatically presented to the greatest depth of the fluid as the position of the body is changed in effecting the fluid discharge.
3. In a combination with a fluid receiving body of substantially half spherical shape, of a member through which fluid is adapted to be device of the class described, the' drawn from said body, the said member being ball and'socket mounted within the body with the center of the ball and socket joint at a point closely adjacent to the center of curvature of the said body;

5. A device of the class described comprising a fluidreceiving body, a fluid chamber within said body, a member cooperative with the chamber through 'a ball and socket joint and through which fluid is adapted to be drawn into the chamber, means for effecting the drawing of fluid into said chamber from the body and for discharging the fluid therefrom out of said chamber, a valve cooperative with said chamber for permitting discharge of fluid only, and a valve cooperative with the member for permitting an indrawing of the fluid only.
6. In a device of the class described the combination with a fluid receiving body of substantially half spherical shape, a fluid chamber within the body, a member cooperative with the chamber through a ball and socket joint and through which fluid is adapted to be drawn into the chamber, the center of the ball and socket joint being at a point closely adjacent to the center of curvature of the said body, and means for effecting the drawing of fluid into said chamber from the body and for discharging the'fluid therefrom out ofsaid chamber.
7. A device of the class described, comprising a fluid receiving body, a fluid chamber within said body, a member cooperative with the chamber through a universal joint connection and through which fluid is adapted to be drawn into thechamber, and means for effecting the drawing of the fluid into said chamber from the body and for discharging the fluid therefrom out of said chamber.
8. In a device of the class described the combination with a fluid receiving body, a spout for discharging the contents of the body, a force feed, mechanism for ejecting the contents of the body through the spout, said mechanism including a pendent cylindrical portion, a member through which fluid'is adapted-to be conveyed through said pendent cylindrical portion, and a universal joint connection between said member and said cylindrical portion, all bein arranged whereby the entrant end of sai member may follow the contour of said body in any direction and be automatically presented to the greatest depth of the fluid as the position of the body is changed in.

In a device'of the type stated, the combination with a fluid receiving body of sub- V stantially half spherical shape and including a filling neck opening; of a closure ca for said opening and including a chamber orming portion, a member having a ball and socket joint with said chamber forming portion at a point closely adj acentthe center of curvature of the body'and through which fluid is adapted to be drawn from the body into the chamber, a pump plunger movable in said chamber for eflecting a drawing of fluid into the chamber when moving in one direction andfor forcing fluid out of said I chamber when moving in the opposite direction, and check valves controlling the said fluid passage.
