To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, STERLING E. NORMAN, a citizen of'the United States, residing at Franklin, in the county of Norfolk and State .of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Liquid-Dispensers, of which the following is a This invention relates to improvements in liquid dispensers of the gravity feed type.
An important object of this invention is to provide a liquid dispenser of the class described having novel means for automatically supplying air to the interior of the receptacle when the same is in an operative position whereby air may readily displace the contents of the receptacle upon being discharged. p
A further objectof the invention is to provide a liquid dispenser havin novel means for normally closing the discharge spout of the same so that the receptacle may be carried from place -.to place while in an inverted or operative position.
A further object of this invention is to provide a liquid dispenser of the class described which is of highly simplified construction, cheap to manufacture and desirable in use.
Other objects and advantages of the in vention will be apparent during the course of the following description.

Figure 1 is a central vertical section through a liquid dispenser embodying the invention.

In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of this invention, the numeral 5 generally designates a cylindrical receptacle which, in this case, is especially adapted for tended through the top 6 at one edge portion of the same and is held in position b a d by downwardly extending flange 11 forme The spout 10 is provided outwardly of the cover with a screw valve 12 which has threaded engagement with one side of the same and 1s adapted to control the discharge of the oil from the receptacle. In the event that a heavy oil is used, the valve ma be partly or entirely removed from the ore of the spout, or in the event of a light oil being used, the valve may be .extended a conslderable distance across the bore of the spout. An outer removable spout section 13 is arranged in longitudinal alinement with the main spout section 10 and has its inner end portion extended outwardlyto form an annular shoulder 14. A coupling 15 is arranged about the outer spout sectlon 13 and has threaded engagement with the main spout section 10 for detachably connecting the outer spout section to the receptacle. The outer spout section 13 may be readily renewed in the event of the same becoming damaged by the machinery being lubricated.
Also the detachable spout section 13 may be the spout section 10 is provided beyond the opening 16 with a conical valve seat 17 adapted to be engaged by the conical head 18 of a plunger 19. The plunger 19 is guided in its longitudinal movement by the inner end portion of the spout section 10 and by a sleeve 20 cagried by the bottom 21. The conical head of the plunger 19 is normally retained seated by a coil spring 22 which, as illustrated, is confined between a retaining disk 23 and the inner portion of the sleeve 20. The lower end of the coil spring 22 engages an annular packing 24 which is s'nuglfy arranged about tla adjacent portion 0 the plunger and is seated on the inner end of the sleeve 20 for preventing theleakage of oil through the sleeve 20. The coil spring serves the double function of normally retaining the plunger 19 seated and of retaining the washer 24 in liquid tight engagement with the guide sleeve 20. If desired the washer 24: may be faced with leather so as to provide a good connection between the same and the sleeve. The rear end of the plunger is extended exteriorly of the bottom 21 and is provided with an annular shoulder 25 which forms a stop element for an operating rod 26. The operating rod 26 extends lengthwise of the receptacle and has its lower end portion extended inwardly and looped about the plun ger as indicated at 26'. The upper portion of theoperating rod is slidably extended through a laterally projecting handle 27 which is arranged on the same side of the receptacle as the discharge spout, with the result that when the receptacle is held in a downwardly inclined position the oil will be directed through the discharge spout. The upper end portion ofthe operating rod 26 is looped as indicated at 28 for providing a manipulating element adapted to receive the index finger of the hand when it is desired to dispense the oil from the receptacle.
When the device is in an inverted or downwardly inclined position, a quantity of air is admitted to the same through a sleeve or vent 29 extended through the bottom 21 and connected to the same by an outwardly extending annular flange 30. When in an upright position the vent 29 is closed by a disk washer 31 mounted on the inner portion of a lever 32. The rear end portion of the lever is pivoted to a standard 33 and the outer end portion of the lever is provided with a weight 34 which serves to retain the disk washer 31 over the inner end of the vent 29 when the receptacle is in an upright position. When the receptacle is inverted preparatory to discharging the quantity of oil from the same, the weight 34.- operates the lever and thereby causes the washer 31 to be removed from the vent 29 with the result that air is admitted into the bottom or what is then the top of the receptacle. The forward portion of the lever 32 is slid ably extended through a vertical U-shaped standard or guideway 35 which is secured to the bottom as indicated at 36. The guideway 35 serves to limit the pivotal movement of the lever and also serves to direct the disk washer 31 to the inner end of the sleeve 29 when the receptacle is returned to an upright position. The air supplying device for the receptacle operates entirely automatically and can only be opened when the receptacle is in an inverted or discharging position. Since the lever 32 is limited in its outward pivotal movement the washer arges? When the receptacle is returned to an upright position, the vent 29 is automatically closed by the weight 34 which serves to engage the washer 31 with the inner end of the vent.
It is to be understood that the form of the invention herein shown and described is tobe taken as a preferred example of the same and that such minor changes in arrangement and construction of parts may be made as will remain within the spirit of the invention and the scope of What is claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. A device of the class described includlng a receptacle having a top, )3. spout extending through said top and engaged with one side of "the receptacle, the inner portion of said spout being provided with a valve seat and an inlet opening beyond said valve seat, a plunger adapted for engaging said valve seat for closing said opening, and an operating device for said plunger.
2. A device of the class described including a receptacle having a top, a spout extended through said top and engaging one side wall of said receptacle, a valve seat arranged within said spout, said spout being provided with an opening inwardly of said valve seat, a plunger slidably arranged in said spout and having snug contact with the side walls of the same, the forward end of said plunger being provided with a head adapted for engaging said valve seat, means to normally retain the head of said plunger in contact with said valve seat, and a guide for the rear end of said plunger.
3. A dispensing receptacle having discharge means, .an air inlet sleeve secured to said receptacle, a weight-operated lever pivoted within said receptacle and provided with a valve adapted to engage the inner end of said sleeve, and means to limit the pivotal movement of said weight-operated lever.
41. A dispensing receptacle having an air inlet, a weight-operated lever pivoted within said receptacle and provided with a washer adapted for closing said air inlet, and discharge means for said receptacle.
