To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Annln E. CANT'RELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Camp Point, in the county of Adams and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dispensing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to dispensing devices ior oil cans, particularly adapted for use in filling oil reservoirs of motor vehicles.
An object of the invention isthe provision of a spout which may be attached to an ordinary can having a valve therein, by means of which the discharge of liquid may be controlled.
A further object is to prevent the discharge of liquid until the spout has been inserted in the filling opening to prevent the contents of the can from dripping during tilting.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a plunger rod for operating the valve, and a tube forming the guide for the plunger rod and serving as a vent opening.
A further object is the provision of an auxiliary valve carried by the plunger rod to normally close the vent tube and reventthe liquid from backing up into t e vent tube.
In the accompanying drawings, I have shown one embodiment of the invention. In this showing:

Referring to the drawings, the reference numeral 1 designates a can of ordinary construction provided with a top 2 having threads formed thereon for the reception of a cover. The device forming the subject matter of the present invention consists of a cover 3, having an annular, threaded flange 4: adapted to engage the top of the can. A spount 5 is secured to the cover and registers with an opening therein. A valve 6 is hinged to the inside of the cover, as indicated at 7, and normally closes the opening in the cover. The cover is provided with an opening 8 and a tube 9 is secured to the under side of the cover, in alineinent with this opening. A plunger rod 1.0 extends through this opening and is provided with a knob or handle 11. plunger rod is provided with an enlarged portion 13, below the tube, adapted to re-' ceive a leather or rubber facing 14, forming a valve to close the lower end of the tube. 18, to form a hook 21 which is adapted to receive one end of a coil spring 22, the other end of the spring being secured to a stationary support, such as the exterior of tube 9, as indicated at 23. A second coil spring. 24: is secured in the hook 21 and extends downwardly, this spring being attached to the arm 15, as indicated at 25. In Figure 101 the drawings, I have illustrated a filling pipe 26 with the end of the spout arranged therein.
In the operation of the device, lubricating oil is ordinarily poured into the filling pipe 26 from any type of container through a funnel. When the container is tilted, some of the contents frequently run out before it is brought into alinement with the filling pipe and drip upon the body of the vehicle which is undesirable. By providing the valve 6, the container may be entirely inverted before any of the liquid will be discharged, and may be arranged in the position shown in Figure 1 of the drawings before the valve is opened. The valve is then opened, by depressing the rod 10, from the dotted line position in Figure 1 of the draw ings, to the full line position. This places the spring 22 under tension and when the pressure is relieved on the end of the rod 10 the valve automatically closes.
The provision of a valve on the lower end of the plunger rod prevents the liquid in the container from-flowing into the vent tube.
When the vent tube fills with liquid, a partial vacuum is formed in the top of the contamer and when the main valve 6 is first may opened, the liquid does not run freely. If the vent tube is closed at its lower end, under normal conditi0ns,,a more ready How of liquid is obtained when the valve 6 isopened. The connection between the plunger rod and the valve rod 19 permits limited independent movement of these parts, and the spring 2&
