LUBRIGATING APPARATUS.

*This invention relates to lubricating apparatus and its principal ob3ect 1S to provide power multiplying means in a lubricating apparatus, whereby oils, greases or other lubricants may be forced between parts which require lubrication, with the application of considerably less force than is required with the common and well known lubricating apparatus. Another object is to providea luiricating apparatus having certain novel characteristics, whereby it may be adapted for use as a stationary oil or grease cup. Another object is to provide a lubricating apparatus having novel power multiplying means, and provided witha flexible connection-and novel means for readily attaching the flexible connection to a nipple of thetype usually provided on machinery. bearings, joints and so forth. Another object is to provide a container for lubricant having a tapered discharge and terminating in a ressure cvlinder having a bore of reduced 1amcter through which the lubricant is forced under great pressure by a plunger to the part to be lubricated. Another object is to provide in the chamber of such a lubricating apparatus a spring pressed supply plunger for supplying lubricant to said pressure cylinder whenever the plunger is withdrawn therefrom.
lVith these and other objects and advan-' tages in view, this invention consists in the lscveral novel features hereinafter fully set side elevation showingthe means of connection between the ca'pand barrel or container; Fig. 5 is'a detailend view of the coupling member for the end of the flexible connection; Fig. 6 is a central, longitudinal section through a slightly modified formof the invention; Fig. 7 is a central, longitudinal section illustrating the application of the invention to a stationary grease or oil cup, and Fig. 8 is a view, part y in section, and partly in side elevation of the cap shown in Fig. 7 and parts connected therewith. Figs. 7 and Sare made upon an enlarged scale for the purpose of clarity in illustrating the invent-ion.
Referring to said drawings and first to Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, which illustrate the preferred embodiment of the invention, the reference character 10 designates a barrel or container of cylindrical form, having a tapering dischargeend 11 secured thereto in any suitable manner. Secured to the small end of the part 11 is a pressure cylinder 12 which contains a bore or chamber 13 of reduced diameter and beyond said *bore 13"the member 12 is formed with a cavity in which is contained a spring pressed check valve 14 which seats against a seat surrounding the end of the bore 13.
The other end of the barrel 10 is open and is closed by a cap or closure 15 which, if desired, may be secured to the barrel by pin and bayonet slot connections 16, 17 (see Fig. 4) to facilitate the ready attachment of the sion plunger 18, which is arranged in a ignment with the bore 13 and is adapted to be forced thereinto to discharge the contents thereof under pressure. The compression plun er 18 may be formed 'as a part of or may e rigidly secured in a stem 19 of some what larger diameter than the plunger proper 18, and said stem and plunger are operatively connected to a handle 20 located exterior of the cap, whereby said plunger may be forcibly moved into the bore 13 and retracted therefrom.
In its preferred form the handle has a sleeve 21 rigidly secured to it, which sleeve is rotatively mounted in the cap 15, and receives one end of the plunger stem 19, which is arranged to reciprocate therein. One or more. cam faces or inclined planes 22 are provided between the cap and plunger stem 19 for eflecting endwise movement of the plunger in one direction, and as shown in the preferred form, the cam faces or inclined planes are provided upon the under side of an annular cam or c lindrical wedge 23,
which is rigidly secure to the cap 15 as for instance by rivets as shown. Traveling along said cam faces or inclined planes are rollers 24 which are rotatively secured ona pin 25, that is secured in the plunger stem-and projects throu h slots 26 formed in the sleeve '21. Said ots 26 extend lengthwise of the sleeve and permit the pin 25 to travel with the plunger stem when the latter is moved endwise of itself. The stem 19 is formed with a key wa 19*, and the sleeve 21 has a pin 21 secure therein which enters the key way and revents disconnection between the sleeve an stem. The edges of the slots enage the pin and transmit power from the handle to the plunger stem whenever the handle is rotated. Two cam faces 22 are illustrated, each extending through an arch of approximately 180 degrees and one arranged diametrically opposite the other. With this arrangement, the handle 20 may be turned through an arc of 180 degrees, startin from the place where the rollers are at the ow places on the cam faces, thereby causing said rollers and therewith the pin 25, plunger stem 19 and plunger 18 to move endwise toward the discharge end of the apparatus, the plunger entering the bore 13 and forcing out therefrom the lubricant contained therein, and under high pressure. When the rollers 24 pass the high places on the cams they are returned to the low places thereon by means which will now be described.
When fully retracted, the plunger 18 uncovers the inlet port to the bore 13, permitting lubricant to flow therewith. The check valve 14 prevents leakage of lubricant ast the seat. When heavier oil or grease or ubricant havin a high viscosity is used,
means are provi ed for feeding the lubricant to the' entrance or port to the bore 13. In the form illustrated, a supply plunger 40 is used, which. plunger may be in the form of a centrally apertured disc that fits the bore of the barrel 10, and is movable lengthwise on the plunger stem 19. A coiled compres sion spring 27 is confined under compression between the plunger 40 and a shouldered sleeve 27* below the pin 25 and said spring serves to force the supply plunger 40 against the lubricantcontained in the barrel, thereby continuously forcing the lubricant toward the discharge end. Whenever the port to the bore 13 is uncovered, a guantity of the lubricant is forced into the ore.
A in 28.limits the movement of the supply p unger on the stem 19. The spring 27 also acts to retract the compression plunger when the 'rollers pass the high places of the cam faces. It-also acts to continuously hold the rollers against the cam faces and to keep the cap and all moving parts associated with it, together, as a unit, whereby when the cap is detached from the barrel, the stem 19, pin 25, rollers 24, spring 27 and supply plunger 49 are thereby removed from the barrel in their assembled condition.
The lubricating apparatus which has been described in detail is usually provided with some kind of connection for connecting it to emma the part which is to he lubricated. In the form of the invention illustrated in the drawing, an armored flexible tubing 29 is employed which tubing is provided with theusual threaded fitting 30 which is secured upon the threaded end of the cylinder meal-- her 12. To provide a tight joint between the member 12 and tubing the rubber tubing is drawn up tightly against the end of the threaded portion 31 of the member 12 as is clearly seen in Fig. 1.
The parts to be lubricated are provided with coupling nipples 32 as usual, and the free end of the flexible connection 29 is provided with a pair of spring pressed dogs 33 that are adapted to engage shoulders 34 on the nipple to prevent disconnection between the flexible connection and nipple when .the lubricant is being forced to the bearing or joint which is to be lubricated. Said dogs are shown as pivotally mounted upon a sleeve like member 35 which is permanently secured to the end of the flexible connection 29. The dogs 33 are provided with springs for normally holdin them in engagement with the shoulders oi the nipple, and finger pieces are provided upon said dogs whereby they may be readily disengaged from the shoulders to disconnect the flexible coupling from the nipple. The rubber tubing of the flexible connection maybe so arranged that it bears againstt'he end of the nipple when the flexible connection is attached thereto, thereby preventing leakage at this point. The flexible connection may be attached to the nipple by simply pressing the end of the. member 35 against the end of the nipple, thedogs being automatically spread apart'as they pass the nipple.
In the modified form illustrated in Fig. 6 the plunger stem 19 protrudes through the cap 15 and has a handle or knob 2O upon its outer end bywhich the plunger may be forced against a supply of lubricant contained in the bore of the cylinder member 12 The compression spring 27 in this case bears against a pin 25 secured in the plunger stem and also bears against the supply plunger 40. In this case it will he observed that the cam arrangement is dispensed with and that power is applied directly to the handle or k'noh of the plunger stem. In other respects the parts may be constructed substantially like those illustrated in connection with the preferred form. The lubricantis fed to the port of the bore in the member 12*, by the supply plunger 4O as in the preferred form and is discharged therefrom by the plunger l8 whenever the latter is forced into said discharge passage.
In the form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 7 and 8, it is applied to a stationary grease or oil cup such as is used in connection with bearings, joints and the like.
Such grease or oil cups usually have a cup like barrel or container in which the grease or oil'is contained, and a threaded nipple 12* which screws into an opening that leads into the bearing surfaces to be lubricated. A bore or discharge passage 13 of relatively small diameter. is formed in the nipple 12 and a compression plunger 18 is slidably' mounted in the cup like barrel or container 10 and adapted to be forced into said discharge passage. The container 10 is provided with a cap which may be secured thereon by screw threads or otherwise and rotatably mounted on the under side of said cap is a cam 2. b which has cam faces or inclined planes that engage with a pin 25 secured in the plunger stem 19. The cam 23 is rigidly connected with a stem portion 21 of the handle and turns with the handle. An oil hole cover plate 20 is provided above the cap, which cover togeiher with the top piece of the cam 23 rotatably secures the handle and cam to the cap. The plunger stem is guided and held against rotation in a strut 19, and a coiled compression spring 19 below the plunger stem acts to retract the plunger after it has been forced down to the end of its compression stroke. It will be observed that small quantities of lubricant may be discharged under great pressure by merely turning the handle 20 ot the preferred form or 20 of the modified form shown in Figs. 7 and 8, and that when the pin 25 or rollers 24 pass the high places of the cam, the compression spring serves to retract the compression plunger 18 from g the bore or discharge passage 13, thereby permitting the supply plungerto again force a quantity of lubricant into said bore or discharge passage.
In the modified form shown in Fig. 6 instead of turning the handle, the knob is pressed' upon, thereby forcing the plunger into the bore or discharge passage and dis charging the lubricant contained therein. \Vhen released the compression spring 27 restores the plunger to its normal position and forces the supply plunger against the lubricant thereby forcing a small quantity thereof into the discharge passage.
It will therefore, be seen that the lubricant may be discharged in relatively small quan tities under great pressure. The apparatus is adapted for use in lubricating vehicles of all kinds, grease cups,bearings, joints, machines, in fact all mechanism where lubrication is required. It can be made to fit any systems of connections of present day grease or oil cups. It can be refilled verv quickly, and can be connected to and disconnected from coupling nipples inless time than others. It can be made in large or small sizes for use either as a grease or oil gun, or as a grease or oil cup. of the parts can be quickly and easily assembled and disassembled, for any reason. The barrel is easily filled with lubricant. The device is easy to operate but very pow-. erful in its operation.
More or less variation of the exact details of construction is possible without departing from the spirit of this invention; I desire, therefore, not to limit myself to the exact form of the construction shown and de scribed, but intend, in the following claims, to point out all of the invention disclosed herein. I
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a lubricating apparatus, the combination of a barrel for containing a supply of lubricant, and having a tapered discharge end, a compression cylinder on said tapered end having a bore of reduced diameter, a compres ion plunger fitting said bore and guided to move in said barrel and arranged to be forced into and out of said bore, means exterior of said'barrel whereby said plunger is forced into said compression cylinder, a supply plunger slidably mounted on said compression plunger in said barrel and a coiled compression spring cooperating with said p'lungers to feed lubricant to said bore of the compression cylinder, and to retract the compression plunger therefrom.
2. In a lubricating apparatus, the combination of a barrel for containing a supply of lubricant,and having a tapered discharge end, a compressioncylinder on said tapered end having a bore of reduced diameter, a compression plunger fitting said bore and guided to move in said barrel and arranged to be forced into and out of said bore, a plunger actuating handle exterior of the barrel operatively connected to said plunger, a supply plunger slidably mounted on said compression plunger in said barrel and a coiled compression spring cooperating with said plungers to feed lubricant'to' said bore of the compression cylinder, andto retract the compression plunger therefrom.

In a lubricating apparatus, the combination of a barrel for containing a sup ly of lubricant, and having a discharge end: a compression cylinder on said discharge end, having a bore of reduced diameter, a compression plunger fitting in said bore and guided to move in said barrel and arranged for movement into said bore, a plunger stem,
a plunger actuating handle exterior of said barrel, an arcuate cam member and a cam engaging member coo crating therewith, one being capable of ro ation relative to the: other, and one being 0 eratively connected to said plunger actuating handle and the of lubricant, and having a discharge end, a-
compression cylinder on said discharge end, having a bore of reduced diameter, a compression plunger fitting in said bore and guided to move in said barrel and arranged for movement into said bore, a plunger stem, a rotary plunger actuating handle exterior of said barrel, a stationarily mounted arcuate cam member, a cam engaging member actuated by said plunger actuating handle and secured to the plunger stem and arranged to travel on said cam member, and a spring pressed supply plunger in said barrel for feeding lubricant to the bore of said compression cylinder, the spring of said spring pressed plunger being interposed between the compression plunger and supply plunger and operating to retract the compression plunger.
5. In a lubricating apparatus, the combination of a barrel for containing a supply of lubricant. and having a discharge end, a compression cylinder on said discharge end, having a bore of reduced diameter, a compression plunger fitting in said bore and guided to movein said barrel and arranged for movement into said bore, a plunger stem, a plunger actuating handle exterior of said barrel, a stationarily mounted cam member, having oppositely arranged inclined cam faces, a in actuated by said plunger actuating han le and secured in said plunger stem and traveling on said cam faces, and a spring pressed supply plunger in'said barrel for feeding lubricant to the bore of said compression cylinder, the spring of said spring pressed plunger being interposed between the compression plunger and supply plunger and operating to retract the compression plunger.
6. In a lubricating apparatus, the combination of a barrel for containing a supply of lubricant, and having a discharge end, a
cap closing the other end of the barrel, a compression cylinder on said discharge end, having a bore of reduced diameter, a compression plunger fitting in said bore and guided to move in said barrel and arranged for movement into said bore, a plunger stem," aplunger actuating handle exterior of saidbination of a barrel for containing a supply of lubricant, and having a discharge end, a cap closing the other end of the barrel, a compression cylinder on said discharge end, having a bore of reduced diameter, a com-' pression plunger fitting ,in' said bore and guided to move in said barrel and arranged for movement into said bore, a plunger stem,
a plunger actuating handle exterior of said barrel, and having a slottedsleeve for receiving and guiding one end of the plunger stem, a cam secured to said cap and a pin secured to said plunger stern and extending out through the slots of said sleeve and travelin on said cam, a supply plunger in said barre and having a limited movement on said plunger stem and a coiled compression spring confined between said pin and supply plunger and operating to press the supply plunger against the lubricant, and simultaneously to holdthe pin in engagement with the cam.
'8. In a lubricating apparatus, the combination of a barrel having a tapered discharge end, a compression cylinder on said end, and havinga bore of reduced diameter, a plunger fitting said bore and mounted in said barrel for movement into said bore, a
plunger, pins secured in said p unger stem,
one on each side of said supply plunger, and a coiled compression spring confined between said supply plunger and one of said pins, said cap, and parts associated therewith being removable from thebarrel as a unit. CQNRAD ROSINE.
