comma!) KNOB arm DIAL.
Application filed July 29, 1822. Seriafl No. 578,309.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM J. MURDOCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chelsea, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Knobs and Dials, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention is concerned with a combined article which is at the same time a knob adapted to be applied to a shaft and by which the shaftmay berotated, and a dial for measuring with respect to a scale of angular degrees or other graduations the amount of rotary movement thus given to the shaft. The purpose of the invention is to provide a device of this nature having improved means for detachably and adjustably securing it to the shaft on which it is applied. For a statement of the exact nature of the improvements in which the invention consists, attention is directed to the following specification containing a description in detail of the preferred embodiment of the invention, and to the drawings.
referred to in such specification.v
In the drawings,-'
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the improved device and its mode of use. 7
Figure 3 is an elevation, detached from its surroundings, of the bushing which is a part of the combined knob and dial.
The combined knob and dial with which this invention is concerned is adapted to be applied in front of or over a panel, on the en of a shaft which rejects through such panel. Difierent con itions under which a nob of the same design is to be used require that the manner of its attachment to the shaft be adjustable, since difl'erent thicknesses of panel or different lengths of shaft may cause the protruding shaft end on which the knob is to be applied to project more or less far from the panel, while practical conditions require that the dial be place to the anel.
The comblned knob and dial which, for brevity, I will generally refer to simply as a knob, consists of a head a with which is connected a skirt or flange b having a beveled surface 0 bearing graduation or scale marks 0?, This knob is required to be applied to a shaft 0 which protrudes at one end from a panel Conveniently t e entire knob is molded as an integral unit from a plastic composition, as vulcanite, and in order to give strength and wearing quality to that part which receives the shaft there is embedded in the mass of the material, while plastic, a bushing 9 having a groove h to receive the plastic material so as to prevent its withdrawal, and a knurled or otherwise roughened surface 21 to prevent the knob from turning upon it.
The bushing is adapted to be slipped over the shaft end, and to secure it on the shaft there is provided a set-screw j which is threaded through the side of the bushing so as to bear against the shaft and has a long shank passing through a groove or assage in the skirt b to an orifice 7c in the eveled knob toward which the protruding shaft pro'ects This is important because it atfor s the greatest possible range of adjustment of the knob, allowing it to be attached to a shaft having only a minimum extent of protrusion from the panel. Another advantage resultingfrom this location, in comparisonwith a possible location of the screw in the head a, is that its presence does not cause any projection-or other breakin .of
continuity in the sides ofthe knob w ich have to be engaged by thetfingers of the operator, thus lncreasin the comfort of the operator in handling t e knob.
Various modifications ma be made in the structure of the knob an dial combined within the scope of the invention and of the protection which I claim. Thus, for instance, instead of making the combined article as an integral structure, the different elements maybe separately made and connected together, whereby the finished article is a unit structure, as well as when they are integrall united together. In the case last indicate the skirt or flange may be made of sheet metal, or other sheet material, suitably formed to provide the peripheral surface which bears the indicating graduations, or of cast metal or other cast or molded plastic material, and attached by suitable fastening means to the head.- However made, the skirt or flange provides an interior space back of its outer surface in which the set-screw is contained and concealed, and an orifice in its peripheral face or surface through which the head of the set-screw is accessible for setting up or .l0osening.
"What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A combined knob and dial formed as a unit structure adapted to be applied on a shaft, a bushing in saidstructure, and a setscrew threaded in said bushing and being accessible for adjustment through the peripheral face of said dial.
2. A- combined knob and dial comprising a knob proper and a flange united as a unit structure, said flange having a beveled or peripheral surface provided with index marks, a bushin embedded coaxially in said structure, an a set-screw threaded into theside of said bushing and contained within said flange, with its outer end accessible through the beveled face of the flange.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature.
WILLIAM J. MURDOCK.
