PATENT ortie.
LOUISDHONDT, or DEDHAM, MASSACHUSETTS.
'- ERASER.
Application led September 15, 1921. Serial No. 500,861.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Louis DHONDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dedham, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Erasers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in drafting instruments and more particularly to a knife erasei embodied in the handle of a ruling pen, the primary object of the invention being to provide a combination of a ruling pen and knife eraser so constructed that the eraser when not in use may be housed within the handle of the ruling pen and, when required for use, may be readily projected beyond the end of the handle.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel means for mounting the eraser blade and for securing this blade in positions of adjustment.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the instrument embodying the present invention, the eraser blade being projected for use;
Figure 2 is a vertical lon itudinal sectional view through the han le of the instrument and illustrating the manner of mounting the blade therein, the parts being shown on a greatly enlarged scale to better illustrate the construction and the blade being shown in full lines in projected position and in dotted lines in retracted position;
Figure 3 is an end view of the instrument; j
Figure 4 is a front elevation in detail of the portion of the instrument embodying the invention.
Fig. 5 is a detail section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
While in the drawings the inventionV is illustrated as embodied in a ruling pen, it will be understood that it may be embodied in some other type of drawing instrument possessing a handle similar to the handle of the ordinary ruling pen. In the drawings the numeral 1 indicates the ruling pen and 2 the handle thereof. The handle is provided with a longitudinal bore 3 which at its outer end communicates with a slot 4 formed diametrically in the .in the handle 2 and held in its end of the handle. Except for the diametric slot 4, the bore 3 is closed at its outer end thus providing a shoulder 5 which serves a purpose to be presently explained. Also the handle is formed with a flattened side 6 having a longitudinally extending slot 7 formed therein.
The blade of the instrument is indicated by the numeral 8 and the said blade may be of the general shape shown in the drawings or of any other desired shape and in the manufacture of the article it will be made of sufficiently small size to adapt it to work through the slot 4 and be received completely within the bore 3 of the handle 2. The blade 8 projects from one end of a head 9 which is of substantially cylindrical form except that it is provided with a fiat side 10, and this head is slidably fitted in the bore 3 of the handle 2 and is adapted, by a means to be presently described, to be shifted in the bore so as to retract the blade to a position housed within the bore or to project the blade beyond the end of the handle in order that it may be used in making erasures. The flat side 10 of the head 9 will of course engage the inner face of the flattened portion 6 of the handle so that the head 9 and consequently the blade 8, is prevented from rotation which is desirable, especially while the eraser blade is being used. In order that the head 9 may be adjusted in the bore 3 osition of adjustment, a screw 11 is fitte diametrically through the head 9 and has 1a head 12 engaging in a notch 13 formed in the side ofthe said head 9 opposite its flattened side 10, the threaded end of the screw projecting beyond the said flat-tened side 1() of the head and through the slot 7 in the handle 2 as best shown in Figure 2 of the drawings. A binding nut 14 is fitted on to the threaded end of the screw jand may be tightened to bear against the flattened side of the handle of the instrument so as to secure the blade in its projected position or in a retracted position as shown respectively in full and dotted lines in the said Figure 2.
It will be observed by reference to Figure 2 of the drawings that when the blade is projected beyond the handle for use, the head 9 will engage at its outer end against the shoulder 5 formed by the closed end of the bore 3 so as to limit the outward movement of the blade and head.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
In an instrument of the class described, a handle member having a longitudinally recessed flattened side, the said member having a longitudinal bore of which the said flattened side constitutes a Wall, the Said Wall having a longitudinally extending slot, a head slidably adjustably mounted in the bore and having a flattened side coacting with the inner :tace of said Wall, a blade carried by the head for projection through the outer end of the bore, the head 15 asecuring device mounted on the outer end 20 of the stem and bearing against the` flattened Wall of the handle.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature.
