Description

G. F. NENNEKER. TUNING ATTACHMENT FOR WIND MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS.
7 APPLICATION rlLsoocr. 11. I920.

- #I O M UNITED STATES GEORGE E. NENNEKER, or LA roRTE. INDIANA.
TUNING ATTACHMENT Ton WIND MUSICAL INSTRUMEN S.
Specification of Letters Patent;
Patented Apt-12, 1921.
Application filed October 11, 1920. Serial No. 416,079.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. NENNEKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Laporte, in the county of Laporte and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tuning Attachments for Wind Musical Instruments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wind musical instruments particularly of the reed type and the object of same is to provide means whereby the air column may be lengthened or shortened for tuning purposes.
A further object of the invention 18 to provide a device of this nature which may be cheaply manufactured and used in connection with instruments now on the market with only the necessity of making minute changes therein which may be performed by any ordinary musician.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a tuning attachment which will be situated interiorly of the mouth piece of a reed instrument and thereby not in any way detracting from the appearance of the instrument.
While the invention is applicable to dif ferent forms of reed instruments, it is-here shown with the mouth piece of a saxophone.
In order that those skilled in the art may have a full understanding of the invention, I have illustrated a desirable and preferred embodiment of the same in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and throughout the various views of which'like reference characters refer to the same parts.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through the tuning attachment showing same inserted in a saxophone mouth piece, and
Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 22' cork sleeve 2 and is provided with external threads 5. An outer sleeve 6 is telescopically mounted over the sleeve 4 and is proelly mounted upon the outer sleeve 6 so that by the rotation of the nut 8 the outer sleeve 6 may be moved longitudinally of the inner sleeve 4. The mouth piece 3 is fitted over the outer sleeve 6 and a key 9 is provided upon the exterior thereof for engaging a notch in the mouth piece 3 so as to prevent the rotation of the outer sleeve 6.
From the above description it will be readily seen that by rotating the nut 8 the outer sleeve 6 may be moved longitudinally of the inner sleeve 4. so asto shorten the air column and thus sharpen the tune of the instrument or so as to lengthen the air column and thus flatten the tune of the in strument.
It will be observed that the attachment may be readily applied to instruments of the character described and that the tuning or changing of pitch may be accomplished with one hand of the player by simply turnin the nut 8 in the proper direction.
bviously, the invention is not limited or restricted to the precise and exact details of construction as illustrated and described, because it is susceptible of a variety of embodiments and many minor mechanical changes may be made in such preferred incorporation of the invention without departs ing from the substance or essence of the invention and without the sacrifice of any j other substantial benefits or advantages.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is:
1. In combination with a mouth piece for a saxophone or like reed instruments, of a tunin device mounted therein.
2. fn combination with a mouth piece for a saxophone or like reed instruments, of a tuning device mounted thereincomprising a sleeve keyed to the mouth piece, an inner sleeve having external threads telescopically mounted in the first sleeve, and a nut swivelly mounted on the first sleeve so as to engage the threads of the inner sleeve whereby the mouth piece and the first sleeve may be moved longitudinally over the inner sleeve.
3. In combination, a Wind musical instrument comprising a tubular instrument end and a mouth piece, a cork sleeve mounted over the tubular instrument end, an inner sleeve mounted over the cork sleeve, an outer sleeve slidably mounted over the inner sleeve and carried Within and keyed to the mouth piece, and means for moving the outer sleeve and mouth pie'oe longitudinally over the inner sleeve.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
GEORGE F. NENNEKER. Witnesses:
C. H. HOOFNAGLE, W. E. ZERBER.
