C. R. KANT COMBINATION SCREEN AND wmnow SASH Filed Oct. 30, I922 i atented Nov. 4, 1924.
UNITED STATES CARL It. KANT, OF CLINTONVILLE, WISCONSIN.
l COMBINATION SCREEN AND WINDOW SASH.
Application filed October ao, 1922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL R. KANT, a citi zen of the United States, and resident of Clintonville, in the county of Vvaupaca and State of l/Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Screens and Window Sashes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
This invention relates to a combination screen and window sash and is particularly directed to a unit adapted to be used in building structures.
Objects of this invention are to provide an inexpensive and space saving unit, which is intended to replace the present expensive frame and space wasting method, in order to accommodate a screen and window or sash, which may be handled as a single unit and readily secured in position and will combine both the advantages of a screen and window.
Further objects are to provide a device which may be used as a unit for providing screens and windows or sash, first for the enclosing of porches with screens and windows, thereby converting the porch into a sun parlor; second, for use in all window openings and porches of summer cottages; third, for residences and other buildings.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front or outside elevation of the unit.
Figure 2 is a vertical elevation on the line 2-2 of Figure 1 drawn to an enlarged scale and showing the unit in position within the casing of a building.
Figure 3 is an enlarged detailed view corresponding to the line 3-3 of Figure l and showing a fragmentary portion of the building casing and of the unit.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, it will be seen that a screen sash 1 has been provided and covered with screen wire cloth 2, such screen wire cloth being conveniently held upon said screen sash by means of the finishing strips or screen mouldings 3. This screen sash is adapted to be positioned within the casing of a building whose upper and lower portions are indicated at 4, and 5, and whose side portions are indicated at 6.
The screen sash 1 forms a casing or frame for the easement window, whose sash is in- Seriall No. 597,845.
dicated at 9. This casement window may, if desired, be composed of a single portion or of two portions, as shown in the drawings, which are hinged at 10 adjacent their outer side to the screen sash 1. It is obvious that if it is found desirable, the sash 9 and the sash 1 may be hingedly joined at other portions in place of their sides, such, for instance, as their tops or bottoms. The sides of the sash 9 are shouldered and c0- operate with similarly formed shoulders upon the sash 1.. If it is desired, the center stiles may also be rabbeted to provide a limit for the outward motion of the sash, and to secure a tight fitting window.
A convenient way of arranging the unit is to provide a blind stop 7 on the building casing against which the screen sash 1 is adapted to seat. The screen sash may be held in position by means of the pivoted type of fastener indicated at 8 or with hooks and eyes on the inside.
It will be seen that a unit has been provided which combines both a screen and a window, which is eminently suited for use in summer cottages, which may be handled and attached as a single entity, which may be readily positioned within a building casing, and which combines the advantages of cheapness and serviceability.
It is further contemplated by this invention that the unit may also be used as one of several units for enclosing a porch, a sufficient number of such units being positioned edge to edge, for instance, to com pletely surround the porch, if desired.
It will thus be seen that a building unit has been provided which may be cheaply produced and which combines the advantage of both a screen and a window.
I claim:
A building unit comprising a sash having side and top portions and a central opening, a screen wire spanning such opening and secured to the outer side of such sash, a pair of glazed panels located within said space and normally closing said space, said glazed panels having their outer vertical edges hinged to the side portions of said sash.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing l have hereunto set my hand at (llintonville, in the county of VVaupaca and State of WVisconsin.
CARL R. KANT.
