Description

Patented Sept. 1, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 3 Claims.
This invention relates to window structures, more particularly to storm windows, such as storm sashes and outside windows commonly used in all cold climates.
The object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a storm window of the duplex sash type which may be easily and quickly installed relative to and from the interior of window or window casing with the ordinary window sashes in the jambs.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth a storm window of the duplex sash type which may be expeditiously installed relative to the front of and from the interior of a window or window casing with the ordinary sashes in the jambs, and when installed latched securely in position.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a storm window of the upper and lower sash type for positioning against the exterior of and for latching to a window casing and with the lower sash capable of being extended outwardly relative to a a lower sash for ventilation when occasion requires.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a storm window of the upper and lower sash type having means for latching the upper sash in closed position relative to the front of a window structure of a building and for selectively latching the lower sash in closed and extended position relative to the said window structure.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a storm window of the upper and lower sash type for pcsitioning against and exteriorly of a window structure and having means for detachably connecting the upper sash to the window structure; for detachably connecting the two sashes together; having the sashes thereof interengaging with each other and interengaging with the window casing of a window structure; for latching the upper sash in closed position relative to the said window casing; and for selectively latching the lower sash in closed position relative to the said window casing and in extended relation with respect to the upper sash and the said window casing.
Further objects of the invention are to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a storm window which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, compact, thoroughly efficient in its use, readily installed with respect to the window of a building, and inexpensive to manufacture.

Referring to the drawings i denotes the casing or frame of a window of a building and 2, 3 the upper and lower sashes respectively within the casing I. As is well known, the sash 2 is arranged outwardly with respect to sash 3 and the casing l projects outwardly from sash 2. The casing i is formed at its front with a bead strip or blind stop 4 disposed throughout its sides and top. The sides of easing l are designated 5, 6. The sill of the window is indicated at 1.
The storm window includes upper and lower sashes or sections 8, 9 respectively. -'I'he upper and lower sashes 8, 9 will be hereinafter referred to as upper and lower sections respectively. The
section 8 includes a frame l0 formed of upper or 45 top, lower and a pair of side bars. Arranged within, anchored to and closing the frame III is a panel H of any suitable material preferably transparent. The top bar of frame III has the inner side of its top edge rabbeted to form a ver- 50 form a horizontally disposed shoulder II and a 5 vertically disposed abutment l5 merging at its top into the inner side of shoulder E4. The side bars of frame it! having the inner portions of their outer side edges rabbeted I50 provide vertically disposed shoulders l6 and vertically disposed abutments ii. The shoulders 66 are disposed at right angles to the abutments ll.
The section 9 includes a frame it formed of upper or top, lower and a pair of side bars. Arranged within, anchored to and closing the frame I8, is a panel l9 of any suitable material preferably transparent. The top bar of frame l8 has the inner portion of its top edge rabbeted to provide a vertically disposed abutment 29 terminating at its lower end in a rearwardly directed horizontally disposed shoulder 2i. frame I 3 are rabbeted in the same manner as the side bars of frame Hi. There is associated with the section 9 a pair of spaced parallel coupling devices 22 of like form for connecting the section 8 at its top to the top of casing l. Each of said devices 22 consists of superposed detachably interengaging parts 23, 24. The part 23 comprises a vertically disposed rectangular plate 25 formed centrally of its bottom edge with an outwardly directed arm 29 disposed at right angles to said edge and merging into a yoke-shaped latching tongue 27. The part 24 is formed with a lower vertically disposed rectangular portion 28, an outwardly directed intermediate portion 29 extended from the top of portion 28 and merging into the bottom of an upper vertically rectangular portion 30 formed with a rectangular slot 3! lengthwise thereof. The plate 28 is secured to and against the outer face of the top strip 4 by holdfast devices 32. The varm 26 of part 23 is arranged upon the top edge of the top bar of frame I 0 and the tongue 27 is arranged forwardly of the top edge of and opposes the front face of the top bar of frame Ill. The lower portion 28 of part 24' is anchored against the front of the top bar of frame l8 by the holdfast means 33. The portion 29 of part 24 oifsets the part 39 of the latter from the front of the top bar of frame iii. The tongue 21 extends through the slot 3! whereby the parts 23, 24 are detachably connected together and the top of section 8 coupled to the top of casing i.
There is associated with the sections 8, 9 a pair of spaced coupling devices 34 of like form for detachably connecting them together and to provide a fulcrum for section 9. Each of said devices 34 consists of a pair of superposed parts 35, 35. The part 35 includes an upstanding rectangular plate 31 having its bottom edge formed with a laterally extending V-shaped latching tongue 38. The part 36 is of the same construction as the part 24 and its slot is designated 39. The part 35 is anchored to the bottom bar of the frame [0 by the holdfast means 48. The part 36 is anchored to the top bar of frame l8 by the holdfast means 4i The part 36 is arranged relative to the top bar of frame l8 in the same manner as the part 24 is arranged with respect to the top bar of frame l8. The tongues 38 of the devices 34 coact with the slots 31 of such devices for coupling the sections 8, 9 together and to provide fulcrums for section 9.
There is associated with the section 9 a pair of latching structures 42 which functions to latch section 9 in closing relation with respect to the lower portion of casing l and to latch section 9 in extended relation with respect to section 8 and the lower portion of easing I for ventilating purposes. Each structure consists of a bracket 43 anchored near the bottom of the inner face of a.
The side bars of side of section 9, a notched latching bar 44 which is pivoted at its lower end as at 45 to the bracket 43, a plate 46 secured to the lower portion of a side of the casing I and a keeper 41 in the form of a frame provided centrally of one side with a pivot 48 loosely connected to plate 46. The keeper 48 extends laterally from plate 46 and has the bar 44 pass therethrough. The keeper 47 selectively coacts with the notches 48a in bar 44 for latching section 9 in its extended position as shown in dotted lines Figure 3, and in its closed position as shown in full lines Figures 2 and 3.
The inner face of section 8 is provided with a pair of spaced pivoted latches 49 of cam form which are to frictionally engage with the inner faces of the sides of the casing or frame I for latching section 8 to the window frame.
When the storm window is set up relatively to the window casing or frame the section 8 is positioned to abut the outer face and lower edge of strip 4, the parts 23 of the devices 22 are coupled to the parts 24. The latches 43 are then shifted to latch section 8 to the window casing or frame. Section 9 is then hung on the tongues 38 and moved rearwardly to engage the outer face and inner edge of strip 4 and to abut shoulder l4 and abutment l 5 of section 8. When positioning section 9 the latching bars 44 are held clear of the keepers 46. When section 9 is in closed position the bars 44 are vertically disposed and engaged with the keepers 41.
The rabbets at the bottom and top respectively of the upper and lower sections are oppositely disposed and provide a substantially Z-shaped joint between said sections. The rabbeting of the sections is such as to make a close fit when the storm window is fitted to the window casing or frame and a close fit between the bottom of section 8 and top of section 9. By this arrangement dead stops are provided at the top, sides and center of the storm window before air passes from the outside to the inside of the storm window and thereby providing substantially airtight joints at the points aforesaid. The form of the storm window permits of the removal of the section 8 from the inside or outside, and also permits of the removal of section 9 from the inside or outside, as well as for conveniently adjusting section 9 from the inside.
What I claim is:
1. A storm window comprising a body formed of upper and lower superimposed endwise interengaging sections, said body for seating at its lower end upon a window sill and being rabbeted at its top and sides for abutting the front face of and to extend into a window frame and engage the inner faces of the sides and lower face of the top of the frame forwardly of the sashes in the latter, detachably and loosely interengaging exteriorly arranged fixed separate parts for detachably coupling the upper of said sections to the top of the window frame, detachably and loosely interengaging exteriorly arranged separate parts fixed to said sections for detachably coupling the lower end of the upper of said sections to the upper end of the lower of said sections and to provide a fulcrum for said lower section, means carried by the upper one of said sections for latching it to the sides of the window frame, and means for latching the lower one of said sections in closed and extended position with respect to said window frame.
2. A storm window comprising a body formed of upper and lower superimposed endwise interengaging sections, said body for seating at its lower end upon a window sill and being rabbeted at its top and sides for abutting the front face of and to extend into a window frame and engage the inner faces of the sides and lower face of the top of the frame forwardly of the sashes in the latter, detachably and loosely interengaging exteriorly arranged fixed separate parts for detachably coupling the upper of said sections to the top of the window frame, detachably and loosely interengaging exteriorly arranged separate parts fixed to said sections for detachably coupling the lower end of the upper of said sections to the upper end of the lower of said sections, and to provide a fulcrum for said lower section, means carried by the upper one of said sections for latching it to the sides of the window frame, and means for latching the lower one of said sections in closed and extended position with respect to said window frame, the said last mentioned means including interengageable shiftable parts mounted on pivots at right angles to each other.
3. A storm window comprising a body formed of upper and lower superimposed sections, said body for seating at its lower end upon a window sill forwardly of the window sashes and being rabbeted at its top and sides for abutting the front face of and to extend into a. window frame and engage the inner faces of the sides and lower face of the top of the frame, spaced aligning member adapted to be anchored to the front face of and each including a shank extended outwardly from the top of the frame and terminating in a hook, spaced aligning members anchored to the outer face of and offset with respect to the upper end of the said upper section and coacting with said hooks for detachably coupling said upper section to the window frame, said shanks seating upon a part of the top edge of said upper section, spaced aligning hook elements secured to the outer face of the lower end of the upper section, spaced aligning connecting members secured to the outer face of the upper end of the lower section and being formed with apertured parts coacting with and for receiving said hook elements for detachably coupling said sections together and providing a fulcrum for said lower section, spaced means carried by said upper section for latching it to the window frame, and spaced means for latching the lower one of said sections in closed and extended position relative to the window frame.
