SHINGLE-CUTTING DEVICE.
Application filed February 28, 1922. Serial No. 540,019.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARK B. SHAW, a citizen of the United "States, residing at Downingtown, in the county of Chester and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shingle-Cutting Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a shingle cutting device, and the object is to provide a simplified form of apparatus which may be kept in order by any good mechanic, and which is adapted for cutting asbestos shingles at any angle required when the shingles are to be placed in position around windows, adjacent to corners, and the like.
A further object is to provide a device which will eflect a clean out leaving both pieces of the asbestos shingles in good condition.
A further object is to provide, in connection with a main frame and uprights carried thereby,a lever to be pivoted between the uprights and controlling a movable cutting blade cooperating with a stationary cutting blade between which blades the shingles are to be placed for the required operation.
A still further object is to provide particular connections between the lever and the mounting means for the movable cutting blade.
WVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of elements described and claimed, it being understood that modifications may be made within the scope of the claim, without departing from the spirit of invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows the device in side elevation; Figure 2 is a plan view; Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Figure 2; Figure 4 is an end view; Figure 5 is a vertical section through the cutting blades and the mounting means there for; Figure 6 is a side elevation, with the movablelblade partly raised.
Themain frame includes the longitudinal elements'lO and 12 and the transverse elements 13 .and 14. A plurality of posts 15 and 16 are spaced apart and are mounted on the frame, these posts serving to pivotal- 1y mount the operating lever 17 provided with a handle portion 18. The pivotal element for the lever 17 is designated 19, and
consists of a bolt passing through posts 15 and 16.
The lower stationary cutting blade is designated 20 and is mounted as shown. The movable cutting blade 21 is mounted on a longitudinal element 22 which has secured thereto a plurality of plates 23 and 24, the outer ends of these plates being apertured and receiving a bolt 25 passing through post 26 and brackets 27 and 28 mounted 011 the frame at the points 29 and 30.
The operating member or lever 17 is con nected with longitudinal member 22 by means of plates or links 31 and 32, through which movement is imparted to the upper cutting blade 21 for raising the latter and moving it to operative or cutting position. An engaging device 33 is provided on the lower side of lever 17 and serves to contact with the longitudinal element 22.
The purpose and construction of the de- 'vice being clear, no further description ap pears to be necessary. The upper blade is of course first raised by the lever, placing the blades at an angle with reference to each other, the shingle is inserted, and pressure applied to the lever for forcing the upper blade through the shingle, in a plane parallel with the stationary blade. The links being pivotally mounted at both ends in the manner shown, they impart positive movement to element 22, mounting the upper blade, during the movement of the lever in either direction. 7
It will be observed from the drawings, that the pivoted end of lever 17 is directly above the adjacent freely movable end of the longitudinal member 22, and that the ends of these members are positioned to limit upward movement, preventing the accidental passing of the hand of the op erator under the knife.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
In a device of the class described, a main frame, a stationary blade mounted on said frame, a movable blade cooperating with the blade first named, a longitudinal element for mounting the movable blade, plates connected with the longitudinal element and extending in parallel relation, upstanding devices mounted on the frame near one end thereof, means for pivotally mount ing the ends of the plates on said upstanding devices, an operating lever pivotally mounted at that end of the frame opposite the mounting of the longitudinal member, and links pivotally connected with the lever and pivotally connected With the longitudinal member near one end thereof, the pivoted end of the lever being directly above an adjacent freely movable end of the longitudinal member, and the approaching ends of these elements limiting upward movement thereof.
