UNITED STATES 1,513,395 PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY W. HOLMES, OF BAHWAY, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOB TO THE REGINA COR- PO'RATION, OF RAHWAY, NEWJERSEY, A QORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
ATTACHMENT FOR BAGS.
Appilication filed may 16, 1923. Serial 110.6893.
Be it known that I, HARRY W. HOLMES, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Rahway, county of Union, State of New J ersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Bags, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to attachments for bags and has for its object to provide a device of simple and novel construction intended for combination primarily with the dust bags of suction cleaners and arranged in a manner to automatically open or spread the one end of the bag when desired, to permit the contents thereof to be readily removed therefrom. The invention will be fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings which show an example of the invention without defining its limits, Fig. 1 is an elevation of the bag with the invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a perspective view thereof showing said bag with its one end automatically open or spread; Fig. 3 is a cross section on an enlarged scale on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a side view of the attachment; Fig. 5 is a plan view thereof and Fig. 6 is an elevation of one form of bag embodying the invention.
As shown in the drawings the attachment comprises an expansible member consisting of two flat springs 10 pivotally connected together at their opposite ends preferably by means of hinges 11 as shown 1n Fig.- 4; the tension of the springs 10 is such that the expansible member normally tends to assume the position shown in Fig. 5 in which the springs are spread apart. The expansible member is incorporated in the bag 12 which may be of any customary construction, for instance, by being enclosed in a. hem 13 as shown in Figs. 1 and 3; an example of the bag 12 in the form of a dust collector for attachment to a suction cleaner, is shown in Fig. 6. The end of the bag on which the expansible member is located is maintained in its normal closed position by means of the customary clamp 14 which is slidably spaced over the end of the bag as indicated in Figs. 1 and 3 and serves to clamp the springs 10 together in the position shown best in Fi 3 in which the hemmed end of the bag is e ciently and completely closed. The clamp '14 may be provided with the customary spring 15 whereby the bagis maintained in place upon the suction cleaner. \Vhen it is desired to empty the bag it is disconnected from the suction cleaner in the well known way after which the clamp 14 isslidably withdrawn as indicated in Fig. 1 whereby its restrainin efi'ect is-removed. As soon as said clamp has been fully withdrawn from the bag, that end thereof, because of the inherent expansibility of the springs 10, will be automatically opened or s read to the position shown in Fig. 2. e action of the sprin 10 will maintain this end of the bag in th1s open condition and thereby permit the contents thereof to be readily emptied and completely removed from the bag. To again close the bag the springs 10 are simply compressed toward each other to permit the clamp 14 to be again slidably placed over the hem 13 to maintain said springs in the condition shown in Fig. 3.
While the invention is primarily intended for use in bags comprising a part of the well known suction cleaners, it obviousl will be useful in connection with bags of other types in which it is desired, at periodic times, to maintain an end thereof inan open spread condition. The attachment is of particular usefulness in connection with suction cleaner bags which have always been difficult to emgty and in which the removal of the dirt an other contents of the bag is always a messy and dirty operation. With the present attachment the emptying of the bag becomes the simplest kind of an operation, easily accomplished, without any soiling of the person emptying the ba Various changes in tire specific form shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spiritof my invention.
I claim:
1. The combination of a bag, a resilient desite ends and fixed in said hemy'said springs having an inherent elasticity tendin to spread symmetrically apart whereby sai end of the bag is automatically spread to an open positlon, and a clamp arranged to be slidably connected with said bag to maintain said springs in straight surface engagement with each other against spreading and thereby close said end of the bag. Y
3. An attachment for automatically spreademme 111 hand.
y HARRY W. HOLMES.
