Description
July 21, 1931. w. c. DAVIDSON SUCTI ON CLEANER Filed April 18. 1929 INVENTOR. 1162??? 8. 3014055072 A TTORNE Y.
Patented July 21, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE iWAL'lER C. DAVIDSON, OF NORTH CANTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE HOOVER COMPANY,
A CORPORATION OF OHIO I SUCTION CLEANER Application filed April 18,
lower portion thereof made from a different and stronger filtering material.
Another object of the invention is to provide a dust bag which has one portion thereof made from a substantially open filter cotton felt material, and another portion made from a different kind of filtering material which is arranged at the lower end of the bag.
Another object of the iIlVQIlt-lOll is to providea dust bag having its main upper body portion made from a substantially open cotton felt material, and its lower portion made of another filtering material such as sateen and secured to said upper portion.
Other objects and advantages will hereinafter appear.
In accordance with the invention the dust bag comprises a bag which has an upper body portion made of a substantially open filter such as cotton felt, and a lower portion which is made from a different kind of filtering material, such as sateen. The sateen portion is secured to the cotton felt portion at a point substantially intermediate the center and one end of the bag. a
In the accompanying drawings which shows a selected embodiment of the invention the views therein are as follows:
- Fig. l is a view in side elevation of a dust bag showing it as secured to a suction cleaner.
Fig. 2 is a detail sectional View on the line 22 of Fig. l.
Referring to the drawings, 5 designates a discharge neck or adapter of a suction cleaner, which is provided with bag clamping means 6 for securing the neck 7 of a dust bag 8 to the suction cleaner. The bag is reduced at its lower end to conform with the size of the discharge neck as shown.
The bag is preferably open at its upper end at 9 so that the bag may be easily emptied, and a clip 10 is provided to close 1929. Serial No. 356,099.-
the open end during use on the cleaner. Flexible means 11 are secured to the clamp 10 for holding the bag in proper position relative' to the suction cleaner operating handle 12. The lower end of thebag is preferably made of sateen as indicated at 13, and the upper end 14 is made of a cotton felt material. The two materials are secured together at 15 at a point substantially intermediate the center of the bag and the lower.
end thereof.
The lower end of the bag is made from a sateen fabric where most of the dust is stored during the actual use of the suction cleaner. Most of the strain and wear occurs at the lower end of the bag, particularly when the machine is used under low places and under articles of furniture. The upper end of the bag is made from a cotton felt material which has been found to be an excellent and eflicient filter. By providing a bag made of sateen and cotton felt practically all the back pressure in the bag will be eliminated.
The bag may be made pleated as shown by the dotted lines 16 in Fig. 1 in order to facilitate storing and shipping. A great quantity of bags may be stored in a small place when the bag is folded.
The invention provides a bag which has the greatest wearing portions thereof reinforced by a material which not only will stand up very well in use, but which has been found to be a very good filter as well. The cotton feltportion of the bag is very porous and provides an excellent filter. Under ordinary circumstances, however, cotton felt does not have sufiicient tensile strength to stand'up when used alone.
Changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof and the right is hereby reserved to make all such changes as fairly fall within the scope of the following claims.
The invention is hereby claimedas follows:
1. A dust bag for suction cleaners comprising a body portion made of air porous IOU cellulose felt and the lower portion made of sateen, said portions being secured together substantially intermediate the center and one end of the bag.
2. A dust bag for suction cleaners comprising a dust bag having an upper portion made of air porous cellulose felt material and open at its upper end for emptying the bag, and a lower portion made of sateen and having a reduced neck, said portions being secured together to form a substantially unitary bag.
Signed at North Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, this 8th day of April, 1929.
\VALTER C. DAVIDSON.
