UNITE-D STATES PATENT oFFlC PAL BURKHARDT, OF ALBION, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO THE 'UNION STEEL lPROD- UCTS COMPANYhLTD., F ALBION, MICHIGAN. f Y
RECEPTACLE,
Application med January 11, 1924. serial No. 685,584.
T0 all whom t may concern: v
Be it known that I, PAUL BURKHARDT, a citizen o-f the United States, residing at Albion, county of Calhoun, State of Michian, haveinvented certain new and useful mprovements in Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
yThis yinvention relates to improvements in receptacles.
`Myimproved receptacle is especially designed .by me as a garbage burner, that is, a receptacle in which waste paper and the like may be burned, although it is desirable for use for numerous other purposes.
'The' main objects of this invention are to provide afreceptacle adapted as a garbage burner which may be effectively secured in closed position yor swung to and will'remain in open position.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.y
v-I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this application, in which:
Fig. I yis a perspective view of my improved embodiment in a garbage receptacle, the cover being in closed position.
FigII' is a detail vertical section with the cover in open position. l
In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawing, I provide a receptacle formed of wire and comprising bottom hoops '1, top hoop 2 and intermediate hoops 3, 'the wire slats 4 being secured in spaced relation to these hoops.
The'bottom 5 is formed of a suitable rim and cross pieces of wire, the bottom being supported in an elevated position relative to the bottom hoop 1.
The cover comprises a rim 6 and cross pieces 7 and 8 of wire, the cross pieces being spot welded to the rim and to each other.
To support the cover for tilting and sliding adjustment I provide a pair of supportmembers 9 secured to the undersides of the cover` cross pieces at their inner ends, the
supports illustrated being formed of a single rpiece `of wire folded upon itself, the bight 10 being spot welded to the underside of the cover, the outer ends of the supports A handle 13 also formed of wire is secured to the central cross piece of the top.
The Vspring latch 14 is formed of wire and secured to cross pieces opposite the cover supports, this latch having a downh wardly curved outer end 15 projecting 'below and beyond vthe rim so that the latch may be disengaged with the top hoop of the receptacle by a sliding motion.
With the partsthus arranged, the cover is secured to the receptacle so that the receptacle may be carried by means of the cover handle when the cover is closed. The cover is held in closed position when the contents of the receptacle are to be burned and isY entirely out of the way when open.
The structure is economical to produce and at the same time very strong and durable and easily manipulated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. The combination with a receptacle provided with a top hoop, of a cover compris-l ing a rim and cross pieces, a pair of spaced covery supports disposed below said hoop and secured at their inner ends to the underside of said cover centrally thereof and said rimwhereby they may be engaged and disengaged with said hoop and the cover is supported for sliding andytilting movement, the inner ends of said supports being upwardly offset spacing the supports from the top and providing stop shoulders for the cover when` swung to open position at the side of the receptacle,'and a spring latch secured to thecross pieces of the coverfopposite the said support and having a downwardly offset free end disposed below and having hooks at their outer ends embracing f Vce projecting beyond the rim to be engaged with or disengaged from the top hoop by a sliding movement of the cover.
2. The combination with a receptacle provided with a top hoop, of a cover comprising a rim and cross pieces, and a pair of spaced cover supports disposed Vbelow said hoop and secured at their inner ends to the underside of said cover centrally thereof and having hooks at their outer ends embracing said rim whereby they may be engaged and disengaged with said hoop and the cover is supported for sliding and tilting movement, the inner ends of said supports being upwardly offset spacing the supports from the top and providing stop shoulders for the cover when Yswung to open position at the side ofthe receptacle.
3. The combination withV a receptacle provided with a top hoop, of a cover provided with a rim, a pair of spaced cover supports disposed below said hoop and secured at their inner ends to the underside of said cover and having hooks at their outer ends embracing said rim whereby they may be engaged and disengaged with said hoop andthe cover is supported for sliding and tilting movement, and a spring latch secured to said cover opposite said support and having a downwardly offset free end disposed below and projecting beyond the rim to be engaged with or disengaged from the top hoop by a sliding movement of the cover. i
4. The combination with a receptacle provided with a top hoop, of a cover provided with arrim, and a pair of spaced cover supports disposed below said hoop and secured at their inner ends to the underside of said cover and having hooks at their outer ends embracing said' rim whereby they may be engaged and .disengaged with said hoop and the cover is supported for sliding and tilting movement.
5. The combination with a receptacle provided with a top hoop, of a cover provided with a rim, and 'aypair of spaced cover supports secured at' their innerV ends tothe underside of said cover in a spaced relation to the rim, said support members being disposed under said hoop and having hooks at their outer ends whereby they may be engaged-and disengaged with the hoopA and the cover is supported for sliding and tilting movement, said supports having shoulders constituting stops for supporting said cover in open position when swung to the side of the'receptacle.
6. The combination with a receptacle provided with a top hoop, of a cover provided with a rim, and a pair of spaced support members secured at their inner ends to the underside of said cover in a spaced relation to the rim to engage said hoop whereby the cover is supported for sliding and tilting movement, and the cover supported in open position at the side of the receptacle. v i p 4 7. rElie combination p with a receptacle provided with a top hoop, of a cover provided with a rim, a cover support disposed below said hoop and secured at its inner end to the underside of said cover, said support member having a hook at its outer end embracing said `rim .j .permitting ,theV engagement and disengagement with 'said hoop and support-ing the' cover-for sliding and Vtilting movement, the'inner end of said supportbeing upwardly offset, spacing the l support' from the top and providinga stopA shoulder for the coverwvhjen swung to openposition at the side of; the receptacle,'and a spring latch secured to the cover opposite the said support' and havinga downwardly offset free end disposed below and pro-f jecting beyond the rim to ybe engaged with or disengaged from the top hoop-bya sliding movement of the cover.
8. The combination with' a receptacle provided with a top hoop, of ,a cover provided with a rim'7 and av cover support disposed below said hoop and securedgat its, inner end to the underside of said .cover,j
said support member having a hoolr at its outer end embracingsaid rim permitting-.f the engagement and disengagement with* said hoop rand supporting the coverrfor sliding and tilting movement, the ini'ier'end of said support being upwardly offset, spacing the support from thetop and' providing i a stop shoulder for the cover'wlieirswung to open position at the side of the receptacle. -9. The combination withf' a receptacle` provided with a top hoop, of a cover provided with a rim, ay cover support secured to the underside' of saidA cover'and slidably embracing said cover whereby the cover is supported for tilting and slidingadjustment and may be swung to open position at Vthe side of the receptacle, `and a spring cover is supported for tilting and sliding` adjustment and may be swung to open po- 1 sition at the side vof the receptacle.
lu witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
