ROBERT A. JOHNSON, on NEW YORK, N. r.
i MPROVEMENT lN SAFETY-GUARD WATCH-CHAINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 151,293, dated May 26, 1874; application filed April 4, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT A. J OHNSON, ofthe'city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Watch Guards or Chains, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a view of a watch and guard to which my improvement has been applied; and Fig. 2 is a detail section taken through the line 00 as, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My inventiorrhas for its object to furnish an improved device for connecting a watch with a guard or chain in such a way that the watch cannot be detached by twisting off the ring from the stem, as is the ordinary practice of pickpockets.
The invention consists in the combination of a safety-chain with the stem of a watch, and with the guard or chain of said watch, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents a watch; and B, a guard, which is attached to the ring a a in the ordinary way. 0 is the short chain, one end of which is attached to the guard 13 near the ring (R, and its other end is secured to the stem a by an open-hinged ring, a clevis-link, and a screw, as shown in Fig. 2, or in any other secure manner, the particular means used to connect it being immaterial so long as the attachment is strong and secure.
By this construction, should a pickpocket get hold of the watch and twist off the stemring, the safety-chain G will still hold the watch securely connected with the guard, so that it cannot be carried off.
The safety-chain C can be applied to a long or neck chain with the same facility as to a guard or vest chain, the length and form of the guard or chain being immaterial.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentr- The combination of a safety-chain, O, with the stem a of a watch, A, and with the guard or chain B of said watch, substantially as herein shown and described.
ROBERT A. JOHNSON.
