To all whom t may concern Be it lnown that l, REUBEN L. SnrrfrNna, a citizen of the United States, residingat Cullison, in the county of Pratt and State A of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Scoop Apron, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to scoop aprons for l use in transferring grain from a wagonto 10 a bin yor from a car to a wagon.
The object of the invention is to provide an apron of this vcharacter constructed so asto be adjusted for use in connection with vehicles of diiieerent widths Vthe width or spread of the apron being automatically adjustable and retained tight by a ytaire-up device.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the cornbination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafterdescribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a perspective view of an apron constructed in accordance with this invention shown open ready for use.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 3 is a detail longitudinal section through one end of the casing which houses the apron; and
Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view showing the means for connecting the apron tothe roller.
In the embodiment illustrated a casing 1 is shown composed of telescoping sections 2 and 3 here shown cylindrical and split longitudinally with outwardly extending lips 4 arranged on opposite sides of the slit or split portion to form guides for the apron 10. This apron is made of canvas or other suitable flexible material and one endl detachably secured to a longitudinally adjustable roller 15 by means now to be described. The roller is made in telescopically engaged sections 16 and 17 which are longitudinally slotted throughout their length as shown at 18 the slot in one section registering with that in the other to receive the edge of the apron 10 which is made offa width greater than the length of the roller and the 'side edges thereof folded inward as shown at 14 in Fig. 1 to provide for increasing the width ofthe apron when desired.y
The roller sections at their louterends are provided with4 slots 19 which parallel the slots 18 and communicate atj their' outer ends by transverse 'slots 20"which form tongues 21 fixed at their free ends to thev roller and around which the folded por` tions 1`4-of the apron aredesigned` to' be arrangedas vshown in 4. The'inner' edges of the folded portions 14 are connected by an elastic connector preferably in the forni of a rubber band or strap 22which holds the apron' yieldably and 'detachably connected with the roller andperinits said apron to automatically widen on the lengthening of the roller thefolded porti-ons 14 providing for this.
The sections 2 and 3 of the casing 1A are equipped with hooks y5 adapted to be engagedwith the tailboard or side 'of a wagon or with any other'support in' connection with which the apron is tobe used?, These sec` tions are closed at theirkouter endsl onebeing slotted as shown at 6 for the passage of the Vangular end of the roller pintle 7 the other sec-tion end having the round end of the pintle loosely mounted therein andsecured by any suitable means. y
A roller, locking device is carried by the outer end of section 2 and is made in the form of a hook 8 the bill of which is ar-y ranged on the outer face of the casing end and its shank extended loosely through said end and provided with a head 9 between which and the` casing end is a spring 23 which bears against said head to cause it to yieldably hold the roller 15 against turning when said headis engaged with one of the cams 24 on 4the'. end of the roller. This rollerlock isr intended to prevent the spring from turning the roller when the apron has been pulled out to its extreme length or for any other purpose to hold it in this position during the lengthening of the roller and the casing as well as the widening of the apron when the device is to be used in connection with wider doors.y The width or spread of the apron is automatically held tight bythe take-up` device, inthe form of the rubber strap 22 which connects the edges of the apron portions 14. lWhile a rubber strap is described kand shown for this purpose it is to `be understood that a coiled spring or any other elastic device may be used.

A scoop apron comprising a' hollow roller composed of telescopically engaged sections, said sections having registering slots to receive the apron in connection with which it is to be used each section having at its outer end a slot paralleling tioned slot, said slots/communicating at their outer ends to form tongues, and an apron having its side'edges folded to receive the tongues, and an elastic element connecting the edgesrof the apron permit the Width thereof to be adjusted.
