bination and arrangement of parts and in the' details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes inthe precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within thev scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the pre-2 ferred form of the invention has beenshown.
member or housing'of the spit closed at one` end by a cap 2 or the like from vwhich a hook 3 or other attaching means is extended. The y' -ed members, cooperating means on the memother end of the member l is exteriorly screwrthreaded as at 4 for engagement by a housing cap 5. Said end of the member l is inturned to provide a retalnmg flange 4c Slidably mounted in the member l are telescopically connected tubular members v6, 7, and 8, each of which has an exterior flange 9 at one end and an interior flange 10 at its other end. The flange 9 of each, member cooperates with the flange 10 or ll of the next adjoining member to guide the member wheny sliding and, if desired, a 'stop in the form l.,
of an intermediate flange l1 may be formed on each of the tubular members (i, 7, and 8 to limit the sliding movement of said members in lone direction. l j The innermost member 8 has a resilient stem l2 slidable therein, there being a collar 13 at the inner end of this stem while a barbed head 14 is at the outer end of the stem. Y
Itis to be understood that any desired numv ber of members 6, 7 ,and 8 can be employed, this depending on the size of the spit produced. Under normal conditions the spit is collapsed so that the several members lie within each other concentrically as shown in against the head 14: and bowing the resilient stem sothat the head will thus bite into the cap and hold it against rotation.
With the parts assembled as shown in Figure 2 the structure can be conveniently carried without danger of injury. When it is desired to use the spit the cap 5 is removed,
the relatively movable parts are slid longitudinallyxto extend the spit, and the object to be cooked is then placed on the head 14.
What is claimed is l. A spit including telescopically connectcollapsed and for engaging and housing thev pointed head. Y
2. A spit comprising telescopically connected tubular members and a resilient mem- Y V2 o 1,755,646
ber having a pointed head, one of the tubular members constituting a housing for the other members, `sind a housing oep detachably engaging the housing member7 said cap constituting means for engaging and housing the pointed head to bow the resilient member, said resilient member and it heads constituting means for retaring the rotation of the cap While in housing position.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afixed my signature.
ELLIOTT N. HALSTEAD. Y
