Description

E. E. BULL STEEL CARD HOLDER i 6 WW! i M! S; I
Patented Get. 21, 1924.
PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD E. BULL, OF CALVIN, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CLARENCE SMITH, 0F ARTEMUS, KENTUCKY.
STEEL CARD HOLDER.
Application filed December 18, 1923. Serial No. 681,426.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, EDWARD E. BULL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Calvin, in the county of Bell and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Steel Card Holder, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device especially designed for supporting and holding destination cards, which are secured to railway freight cars for indicating to trainmen the destination of the cars.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be readily and easily operated and one wherein the cards will be securely held, eliminating the necessity of nailing or tacking the cards to the sides of the cars.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will support cards of various sizes.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing: I
Figure 1 is an elevational view of a holding device constructed in accordance with the i vention and showing the same as applied to a car.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the device.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 designates the base or supporting plate of the holder, which may be of any desired configuration and formed preferably of sheet metal.
Openings 6 are formed adjacent to thecorners of the base 5 whlch openmgs may receive securing members such as nails or screws, whereby the device may be readily and easily positioned.
Formed integral with the base 5 are spaced arms 7 which are struck from the base 5 as clearly shown by Figure 2 of the drawing, the arms 7 being formed with openings to receive the pivots 8. Cooperating with the base 5 is a jaw 9 which is substantially U- shaped in formation and formed with openings to receive thepivots 8 whereby the jaw Fingers 12 are also struck up from the 7 base 5 and are arranged, in parallel relation with each other to engage opposite sides of the handle 11 and grip the same to hold the handle and jaw forming a part thereof, in
their active positions.
Spurs indicated at 13 are also stamped from the base 5 and while these spurs are shown as arranged in parallel relation with each other, it is to be understood that these spurs may be arranged in staggered relation I with each other or in any way desirable to better accomplish their purpose.
In the use of the device, the handle 11 is operated to move the jaw 9 to a position out of engagement with the base 5, whereupon the destination card to be supported by the device may be forced overthe spurs 18. The handle 11 is now forced downwardly bringing the j aw 9 into close engagement with the cards, the fingers 12 acting to grip the handle 11 to hold the handle against movement.
It will be obvious that by moving its handle to itsupper position, the card supported on the base 5 may be readily removed and replaced when the cards are to be I claim:
A card holder including a base, spurs formed on the base, a jaw pivotally supported on the base and having teeth formed along the lower edge thereof, a handle form ing apart of the jaw and adapted to be moved to move the jaw into engagement with the base, and fingers cooperating with the handle forholding the jaw in its active position.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD E. BULL.
