APPARATUS FOR HOLDING AND DISPENSING ROLLS OF SHEET METAL.
Application filed January 25, 1923. Serial No. 614,756.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT NORMAN Parr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beaver Falls, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Holding and Dispensing Rolls of Sheet Metal, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description of my invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an apparatus for holding and dispensing a roll of sheet metal stripping.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive holder whereby a roll of material can be readily inserted and held in projected, elevated position, so that desired lengths thereof can be handily un rolled and cut off.
Another object of my invention resides in the mechanism for retaining a roll of metal stripping in elevated position in a holder to prevent unrolling of its own accord.
It is a further object of my invention to simplify and improve the construction and operation of a device of this character, and eflect the material reduction in the cost of manufacture.
Another object of my invention consists in several novel features of construction and new combination of parts, hereinafter fully set forth and pointed out in the following specification and claims.
Referring to the drawing, Fig. 1 repre sents a side elevation of the holder with a roll of sheet stripping supported therewith; Fig. 2 is a sectional View of the holder showing the .roll engaging the lower bearlng, taken on line BB of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 isa sectional view thru the holder illustrating the upper bearing roller engaging the roll of stripping, taken on line AA of F1g. 1; and Fig. 4; is a fragmentary top plan v1ew of the tension arm in engagement with the roll.
The apparatus constituting my invention is designed primarily for use in stores where it is desired to display a roll of strip brass, and also to secure the roll in elevated position, so that the salesman can readily unroll and cut off desired lengths therefrom. The casing is adapted to be nailed or screwed to the wall, or a standard, so that it will be positioned several feet from the floor. It is obvious, however, that this invention can be used for holding rolls of strip metal of Va rious types, and that the holder can be socured in various other suitable methods.
Referring in detail to the drawings, I provide a casing which is made up preferably as a unit from sheet metal, and which consists of a base member 10 adapted to be secured to a Wall 11, and substantially parallel sides 11 projecting outwardly from the base member which receive a portion of the roll therebetween. A portion of the side members 11, near the bottom thereof, are pressed inwardly forming bearing members, or shoul ders 12, against which the outer portion of a roll of strip material 13 engages. Angular slots 14 extend from the forward upper edges of the sides 11 and'provide a bearing to receive a shaft 15, upon which a bearing roller 16 is mounted intermediate of the walls. The shaft and roller are removable from the casing, and when removed, the roll of strip material is placed between the walls 11 so that the outer edge thereof rests against the flanges 12. The roll is then pressed upwardly sufficiently to permit the shaft 15 and the roller 16 to be secured in position with the casing. When the roller is in such position the roll of material is dropped down and allowed to rest upon the roller with its inner edge, and thus provide a lower bearing member and an upper roller bearing member which engage the outer and inner edges of the'roll and hold it in projected relation with the casing.
A curved tension arm 17 is hinged at 18, to the top portion of the base member of the casing, and projects forwardly above and be yond the side walls of the casing. A U- shaped member 18 is secured to the end of the tension arm by a bolt 19 and the sides of this member extend down adjacent the sides of the upper portion of the roll of strip material. A rubber strip 20 extends around the end of the tension arm 17 and the U-shaped member 18 and is secured in position therewith by the bolt 19. A coil spring 21 is secured to the tension arm 17 and the base member 10, extending therebetween forwardly of the hinge 18. This s ring creates tension against the arm 17 so tliat the end of the arm is pressed down against the roll 13 to assist in holding it in a substantially stationary position and at the same time preventing the roll from unwinding.
It is to be understood that a plurality of sides 11 could project. from the base member 10 to provide holders for several rolls to be held side by side, if so desired.
This type of casing allows a roll of material to be readily inserted or removed from a holder, and permits the roll of metal tape to be unrolled with a minimum amount of friction and effort due to the friction bear ing roller 16.
Various changes in the details of construction can be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention as described, and as set forth in the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. A holder for suspending a roll of stri material comprising a casing having side members between which a portion of the roll of material extends, a pair of spaced bearing members secured intermediate the sides of said casing and located in different hori- Zontal planes, one of said members bearing against the interior of the roll of material and the other of said members bearing against the exterior of the roll of material, and a tension'arm adapted to engage the exterior of the roll of material adjacent the member bearing against the interior of the roll of material.

A holder for supporting a roll of strip material comprising a casing having substantially parallel sides adapted to enclose a portion of a roll of material, flanges eX- tending inwardly from the sides of said casing to provide a lower bearing for engaging the outer portion of a roll of material, and an upper bearing member between the sides of said casing for engaging the inner'portion of the roll of material forwardly of said flanges, and a tension arm adapted to engage the outer portion of the roll of material adjacent said upper bearing member.
4. A holder for suspending a roll of strip material comprising a casing having substantially parallel sides adapted to enclose the rear portion of a roll of material, a lower bearing member between the sides of said. casing for engaging the outer portion of the roll of material, and an upper roller bearing extending transversely between the sides of said casing to engage the inner portion of the roll of materlal, said roller bearing being rotatable relative to the roll of' material, and a tension arm adapted to engage the outer portion of the roll of ma terial adjacent said upper bearing member.
5. A holder for a roll of strip material comprising a casing having substantially parallel projecting sides adapted to receive a portion of the roll therebetween, said sides having aligned slots extending downwardl from their upper edges, a lower bearing member extending between the sides of said casing for supporting the outer portion of the roll, a removable roller supported by a shaft mounted in the slotted sides of said casing, said roller extendinginteriorly of the roll of material and being rotatable and removable independentlyof the roll of material, and a tension arm adapted to engage the exterior of the roll of material adjacent said roller.

Aholder for a roll of strip material comprising a casing having substantially parallel projecting sides adapted to enclose a-portion of the roll, a lower bearing member within the sides of said casing to engage the outer portion of the roll, an upper forward roller secured within the sides of said casing to engage and support the inner portion of the roll, and a tension arm pivoted to said casing above said bearings, and 2. A holder for a roll of strip material comprising a casing having substantially parallel'projecting sides adapted to enclose a portion of the roll, alower bearing member within the sides of said casing to engage the outer portion of the roll, an upper forward roller secured within the sides of said casing to engage and support the-inner portion of the roll, a pivoted tension arm extending forwardly over said roll, and a rubber cover secured to the end of said arm to engage the outer portion of the roll.
9. A roll holder comprising acasing including-a base plate adapted to-besecured to a wall and parallel sides projecting from the base plate, bearing members turned in said casing, a roller mounted above and forwardly of said bearing members between the sides of said casing, said bearing members and said roller respectively engaging the outer and inner surface of the portion of the roll near the casing, and a pivoted spring operated tension arm for engaging the roll of material ata point beyond said roller.
10. A holder for suspending a roll of strip material comprising a frame, a rotatable roller carried by said frame for engaging the inner portion of a roll of material, said roller having a rolling contact against the roll of material, and a bearing carried by said frame in a plane beneath said roller for engaging the outer surface of a roll of material, and a tension arm engaging the outer surface of the roll of material adjacent said roller.
11. A holder comprising a frame, adapted to receive a portion of a roll of strip material therein, a rotatable roller carried by said frame for bearing against the inner portion of a roll of material, said roller being removable from said frame While the roll of material is supported therein, a sup porting bearing carried by said frame in a plane below said roller for engaging the outer surface of a roll of material, and a tension arm engaging the roll of material adjacent said roller.
