Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. HBLQQML datcd May 26, 1874; application filed Jannary 16, 1874.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that -I, Josnrn DEUELL, of Boston, Massachusetts, have invented a Childs Rolling-Bell Toy, of'which the following is a specification:
The purpose of the invention is to furnish a safe and indestructible toy for the amusement of children, to be composed of one or more pieces of leather, rubber, or other suitable material. It is made in a circular form, and is to contain within the circle one or more bells of any kind. I prefer small-sized sleigh bells. The bells are to be attached to the ring (andinside thereof) by means of rivets, screws, or equivalents. The bells so placed are not liable to fracture, nor to injure or deface the furniture. When leather or any flexible substance is used I first cut the substance of requisite length, joining and fastening the ends together., I then cover the substance with fancy or enameled leather, properly prepared, bringing the edges over the plain leather, or similar flexible substance, drawing the covering close and whipping it together inside the ring, thus having no raw edges. This forms the outer ring. I then make an inner ring in the same manner, and attach thereto the bells. This ring, with the bells attached, is then placed inside of the first-described ring, and both are sewed together firmly. The seams are not in sight, and the ends of the screws or rivets are covered. This makes a strong and neat piece of work, presenting no scams or rough edges to scratch the child; and as the bells are inside, the whole operates as a harmless, amusing, and indestructible toy. 1f made of india-rubber or any hard substance, one ring, with the bells attached, as described, may be used, the ends of the rivets or screws passing through the ring being countersunk. The india-rubber ring may be corrugated or chamfered for use by children teethin These rings may be made much smaller, of course, with smaller bells, than as represented in the drawings hereto annexed.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of a toy embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a geometrh cal drawing of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the same.
b represents the outer ring; a, the bells, as attached; 0, the inner ring, to which the bells are attached, when the rings are made of leather or other flexible substance; if made of rubber or any hard substance, one ring may answer, as described.
I claim as my invention- As a new artieleof manufacture, the withindescribed childs rolling-bell toy, composed of a ring or rings of leather or other flexible material, and carrying bells upon its inner circumference, the whole constructed and ar ranged substantially as set forth, and for the purpose described.
JOSEPH DEUELL.
