Description

(No Model.)
} G. T. CHANDLER. ROCKER OR DEVICE FOR THE HEALTHFUL AMUSEMENT OF CHILDREN.
Patented Aug. 30,1881.
NITED STATES PATENT Erie.
GEORGE T. CHANDLER, OF AMERIOUS, GEORGIA.
ROCKER 0R DEVICE FOR THE HEALTHFUL AMUSEMENT OF CHILDREN.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 246,458, dated August 30, 1881.
Application filed January 31, 1881.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, GEORGE THOMAS CHAND- LER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Americus, county of Sumter, State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Rocker or Device for the Healthful Amusement of Children, to be known as The Ohilds Rainbow, of which the following is a specification, illustrated by the accompanying drawings, the same not known to have been patented in any foreign country, or before known or used in this country.
The object of said device is in behalf of the children, and is designed, by a combination of parts and properties, to supersede all the cumbrous contrivances for the same endviz., the healthful diversion of children.
Figure l is the machine complete in perspective. Fig. 2 is a top view of a fiat metal disk which accompanies it. Fig. 3 is a side view of Fig. 2.
Said device consists of two segments of a circle, a a, placed parallel to each other at any desired distanre apart and securely fastened together, completely and neatly covered over on their convex edges 1) I), having a neat projection, c, to prevent capsizing, the whole to be placed upon the floor or ground in the position of an inverted arch, as represented in Fig. 1. d d are seats fixed at or near the extremities of the arch, on which the children sit, so that by oscillating the body backward and forward an easy locking motion can be obtained at very little costof effort. The design is taken from the rainbow inverted, and when the machine is finished up for useit should be painted on the sides in stripes of difl'erent colors to represent the rainbow. Said stripes are indicated in Fig. l by the numerals 5 6 7 8 9.
1t consists,'also, ofa flat metal disk, Fig.2, f, of a diameter bearing proper proportion to each machine, with an iron pin, g, rising from (No model.)
its center at right angles to its surface. Said pin shall fit into a hole, 0, in the bottom and center of the how. The design of this is to allow the bow to be pushed around horizontally, describing a circle of which the disk-pin g is the center, thus obtaining a pleasant motion in a horizontal plane, in addition to the first motion obtained, which was in a perpendicular plane. WVhen this last motion is desired the disk is to be set asidethe whole bearing an awning of any tasteful design above, if desired.
The above-named machine, as herein substantially set forth, may be made of wood or metal, as desired. It can be made of any desired width or depth, of any desired diameter of circle, of any form of curve, either parabolic, perfect circle, or ecliptic, with two or more ranges of seats, with a double floor, if desired.
I am aware that there have been made and used rocking toys for childrenas, for example, the hobby-horse, which gives a motion in the same plane, but not the same motion as this. I am not aware of anything in use of the particular design and structure of the machine herein set forth.
I am aware that there have been devices used for obtaining circular motion in a horizontal plane-as, for example, the flying-jenny, but I am not aware that the same end has been obtained by any device of the same form and design as that herein set forth.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The rocking device herein described, consisting of an inverted arch with seats on either end, in combination with the disk faud centerpin g, for producing circular horizontal motion, as and for the purpose set forth.
GEO. THOS. CHANDLER.
