Our invention consists in the combination of parts and in the details of construction and arrangement of parts as will hereinafter be more fully described and claimed.

Fig. 6 is a horizontal sectional perspective view of part of one of the side channels and the adjacent part of the door plate.
In the door chosen for exemplification of our invention herein the door plate 1 is simply a flat metal plate of ample thickness as is usual in such constructions. This door has top bolts 2, bottom bolts 3 and front and rear bolts 4 and 5, respectively, all of which are operated through suitable mechanism 6 by means of the lock 7 in the usual manner.
Our invention comprehends the making of I the frame which surrounds these bolts and locking mechanism of relatively wide channels which are riveted, welded or otherwise suitably fastened to the door plate 1. In the present example there is the front channel or member 8, rear member 9, top member 10,

bottom member 11 and inside these the middie member 12 and the upper and lower in ner members 13 and 14:, respectively. Each one of these members is a channel with lateral flanges 15 which are flat and fit snugly against the flat inner side of the door plate 1; and it is these flanges 15 that are riveted,
welded or otherwise suitably secured to said door plate. These channels are preferably formed by pressing them from sheet metal. They need not be as thick as the door plate. When made about one-fourth as thick as the door plate, as indicated herein, these channels provide very strong'reinforcement for the plate because of their two sides at right angles to the plate and because of the very extensive bearing which they. have in their attachment to the plate by the two relatively wide flat flanges 15.
Where the top and bottom members 10 and 11 meet the front and rear members 8 and 9 at the' corners of the door they are mitered together but are not necessarily attached thereat. If the miters be accurately cut and properly finished after said cutting, they may be made to fit so nicely that the joints are practically invisible; and the attachment by means of the flanges 15 throughout the lengths of the members is ample to insure a maintenance of the proper relation of the members and these mitered corners.
The inner members 13 and 14 are suitably fitted to the outer members at their ends and the middle member 12 is likewise suitably fitted to these members 13 and 14:; all of these being secured to the plate by their fianges15 the same as their outer members and these flanges being cut away at the ends of the members where they meet the sides of other members as shown in Fig. 2.
The front and rear members Sand 9 and the middle member 12 have bearing openings for bolts 1 and 5, respectively, and the upper members 10 and 13 have similar openings for the upper bolts 2 while the lower members 11 and 14k have the same kind of bearing openings for the bolts 3. It will be understood that the respective bolts do not slide entirely through any of the inner members; the horizontal bolts 4 and 5 having clearance inside the middle member 12 so that their ends do not interfere with each other when the bolts are'in locking position and the inner ends of the upper'bolts; 2' and lower bolts 3 clearing the lower and upper side's, respectively, of the upper and lower channel members 13 and 14, respectively. 7 I
These bearing openings may be simply the length of the thickness of the channel metal as seen in Fig. 3 or they may be lengthened by drawing out part of the metal around the opening to form a neck 16, as shown in Fig. 6; or this lengthening may be accomplished by other means as by securing a washer 17 coincident with the bearing opening, as shown in Fig. 4. Even though the length of this bearing is not increased it will be ample because each bolt has three such bearings; two in one of the channels where the bolt extends through both sides and one in the other channel. Where the necks 16 are provided they are preferably pressed out after the channel has been formed; this being readily accomplished without distortingthe channel by the use of a short punch with a sectional guide introduced inside the channel after holes have been bored in the channel sides of the proper diameter to permit such a punch to form the neck of the required length in conjunction with a suitable die against the outer side of the channel; The channels may be rolled into shape but it is ,diflicult to form them'sufliciently accurate for the 'present invention in that way. It is preferable to draw them into shape by a suitable elongated punch and die. These channels may be thus drawn into shape of approximate length and then have their ends cut to form a proper junction with the other members; or the elongated fiat blanks for these channels may have their ends cutto the proper shape prior to forming so that when formed these ends will form ace curate miters for the outer members and'accurate end abutments for the lnner members.

have shown and described these rather specifically in elucidating the construction and use of our invention, as is required, we do not wish to beunderstood as being limited to such precise showing and description,
but having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a vault-door construction, a door plate and an inside frame extending around adjacent to the edges of said door plate and comprising members of channeled cross-section with flat flanges extending inopposite directions from the open sides of the channels and fixed to the side of said door plate, some of said members having openings through the sides of their channels and locking bolts extending through said openings, and additional members of similar channeled and flanged formation within the space surrounded by the aforesaid members, and having openings receiving other parts of said locking boltsu, i

In a vault-door construction, a door plate and an inside frame extending around adjacent to the edges: of said door plate and comprising members of channeled cross-sec tion with flat flanges extending in opposite directions from the open sides of thechanalinement and having their ends presented toward each other inside said additional member with clearance, whereby said bo'lts may slide toward each other.
3. In a vault-door construction, a door plate and an inside frame extending around adjacent to the edges of said door plate and comprising members of channeled'cros's-section with flat flanges extending in opposite directions from the open sides of the channels. and fixed to the side of said door plate, some of said members having openings through the sides of their channels'and' look ing bolts extending through said-openings, and having extensions around said openings to provide additional bearing openings for said bolts.
4. In a vault-door construction, a door plate and an inside frame extending around" adj acent' to the edges of said door plate and comprising members of channeled cross-section with flat flanges extendingin opposite directions from the open si'd'esof the chan nels and fixed to the side of said doorplate', some of said members having openings through the sides of theircha'nnels and looking bolts extending through said openings,- and having extensions around said openings to provide additional bearing openingsfor said bolts, formed by pressing the material of said channel sidesfrom said openings;
5. In a vault-door construction, a door I plate and an inner reinforcing member of channeled cro'ssseotion, having flat flanges extending in opposite directions from the open side of the channel and fixed against the inner side of said door plate and having a continuous clbsed exposed wall from end to end, substantially as set forth and for the purposes specified.
