PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH SOSS,` OF NEW YGRK, N. Y.
DOOR.
Application led January 21, 1920.
To @ZZ whom t may concern Be it known that I, Josnrn Sess, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Doors, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to doors and particularly to the doors of motor vehicles, and the object of the invention is to construct or fashion the framework of a door of this .class in a new way in order to simplify the construction and reduce the cost of manufacturing the same; a further object of the invention being to provide means for reinforcing the framework of the door; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in a die-cast door framework constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is an inside plan View of the framework of a door made in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 a partial section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 a partial section on the line L1*/1- of Fig. l; and,
Fig. 5 a central longitudinal sectional view through a die employed in making my improved door framework.
In Figs. 1 to 4. inclusive I have shown at 10 the framework of a motor vehicle door, the general form of which is similar to the usual framework of doors of this class, as now constructed, and my invention consists in the method of making or fashioning this framework. Heretofore it has been customary to construct the framework of doors from wood or metal frame members covered with a sheet metal facing fashioned to the desired shape or form by stamping, forging or otherwise.
In forming my improved door the side frame members 11 and 12 and end frame members 13 and 14C are integrally ycast to the Specification of Letters Patent.

desired form in a suitable die or mold. In Fig. 5 I have shown for illustrative purpose, a die 15 composed of separate parts 16 and 17. The parts 16, or the inner face thereof, is cut out or fashioned as shown at 18 to form the outer face portion of the door frame, while the inner face of the part 17 of the die is cut out or fashioned as shown at 19 to form the inner face portion of the door frame. In the construction shown the part 16 of the die is provided with two apertures 2O which open outwardly therethrough, and which communicate with a plurality of gates 21 formed on the inner face of the part 17, and these gates communicate with the cut-out portions 18 and 19 of said parts of the die, whereby molten metal may be forced through the apertures 20 and gates 21 to the cut-out portions 18 and 19 to form the desired casting.
The cut-out portions 18 and 19 in the die 15, or the separate parts thereof, are such as to form on the side and end members of the door frame 10 cast in said die outer and inner flange portions 22 and 23 on the outer face of said side and end frame members, inwardly of which are comparatively wide web portions 24 which extend the full length of said side and end frame members as is clearly shown in Fig. 1. I also preferably employ in connection with the side and end frame members a reinforcing chan nel member 25, which is placed in and between the separate parts 16 and 17 of the die and is cast integrally with the framework of the door as is clearly illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3. This reinforcing channel member which serves to strengthen the separate members of the frame also functions as a guide and slideway for the window, or window frame of the door usually employed in doors of the class under consideration;
The inner flange 23 of the end frame member 14 and the side frame members 11 and 12 adjacent to said frame member are groovedas shown at 26 to receive a sheet metal facing 27 fashioned to the desired form and which is secured to the framework of the door by welding, bracing or otherwise, after said framework has been cast to the desired form. I also preferably cast integrally with the side members 11 and 12 of the frame a transverse strip 28 shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawing and serves to reinforce the lfree end portion receive resilient bumper blocks 31, and said side frame member is also provided with a recess 32 to receive the usuallock Vconstruction 33 employed in doors of the class under consideration. The handle 34C of said lock construction passes outwardly through the face of saidy side member of the frame as shown in Fig. 4, andvit will be noted that this look construction is so located in the side member of the frame as to permit of the free passageV of the window frame or sash in the reinforcing channel members 25.
The side member 12 of the frame, or the flange 22 thereof, is provided with a plurality of spaced apertures 35 adapted to receive one of the members 36 of a plurality of hinges. It will be understood that these apertures 35 as well as the recesses 30 and 32 are all formed in the complete casting made in the die 15 shown in Fig. 5,`or a die or mold similar thereto.
It will be apparent that9 while I have shown a door frame of specific form and construction andv what is known as a full length door, my invention is not limited in this respect nor am I necessarily limited to any specific form of die or mold used `in the formation of such door, and various changes in and modifications of the construction herein shown and described may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Y Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An article of the class described the framework of which consists of side and end frame members formed into a single die-cast unit, said side and end frame members being approximately T-shaped in form in cross section, and a reinforcingsheet metal channel member cast integral with and extending throughout the full length of the side and endV members of the frame.
2. An article of the class described the framework ofwhich consists of side and end frame members formed into a single diefcastunitysaid sideand end frame. members being approximately T-shaped in form in cross section, a reinforcing sheet metal channel member cast integral with and extending throughout the full length of the side and end members of the frame, and the side members of the frame being provided with recesses and apertures to receive door ttings and fixtures.
3. A motor vehicle door framework composed of a single unit of die-cast metal, said unit consisting of side and end frame members, and said frame members being provided with recesses and apertures adapted to receive door fittings and fixtures, andthe outer face of the side frame members and one end of said end frame members being provided with recesses adapted to receive a sheet metal facing which is secured therein.
4C. A motor vehicle door framework composed of a single unit of die-cast metal, said unit consisting of s ide and end frame membersa said frame members being provided with recesses and apertures adapted to re ceive door fittings and fixtures, the' outer face of the side frame members and one end of said end frame members being provided with recesses adapted to receive a sheet metal casing which is secured therein,y and means cast integral with the side members of the frame for reinforcing the free end portion of said sheet metal facing and to provide means for securing said end` portion of the framework of the door. i Y
5. A diecast article of the classdescribed, the framework of which consists off'side' and end frame members composed of a single metal unit, and a sheet metal channel member formed integral with said unit with the channel of said member directed inwardly of the side and end frame members.
G. A motor vehicle door frame work composed of a die cast metal unit and a sheet metal member partially embedded in and forming a facing or part of said unit.
7. A motor vehicle door frame work composed of a die cast metal unit, said unitconsisting of side and end frame members and the side frame members being provided with recesses and apertures adapted tov receive door fittings and fixtures.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing. witnesses this 17th day of January, 1920.
JOSEPH SOSS.
