My invention relates to improvements in butters for automobile doors. This inventionis an improvement upon the invention relating to anti-rattling devices or buffers for automobile doors described and claimed broadly in my co-pending application, Serial No. el33,379, filed December 27th, 1920,

One'of the principal objects of my in vention is to provide an efficient and simple device for preventing the rattling of automobile doors, which may be manufactured and assembled at a-comparatively low cost.
Another object of my invention is to provide an anti-rattling device for automobile doors in which the butler member, which may be made of rubber or other resilient material, is of uniform cross-section throughout its length so that the individual butler members can be made by cutting a long strip of rubber or similar resilient material into the desired lengths, thus simplifying the manufacture of" the buffer members and reducing their cost.
Another object of my invention is to provide a butler member of rubber, or similar resilient material, having a longitudinally extending rib with laterally extending shoulders which may be compressed, in order tov pass the rib through the opening in which the buller member is mounted, and then allowed to expand laterally behind the Walls at the side edges of said opening, so as to anchor the bufier member in place.
Further objects, and objects relating to economics of material and details of con' struction, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow. I accomplish the objects of my invention, in one instance, by the devices and means described in the following specification. My invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the appended claims. in general, l carry out the objects of my invention by providing a butler member having a rib extending longitudinally thereof, said rib having portions extending laterally so that the rib flares outwardly from its base, that is, from the points where it is connected with the body portion of the butler member. I have found it very desirable to make the body portion of the butler cylindrical and, in such case, it is very desirable to form the rib in the shape of a radially-extending sector-shaped portion on the cylindrical body portion. This form is desirable because of the simplicity of manufacture, but I am not to be restricted to this particular form as will I also find it very desirable to provide the body portion of the butler member with shoulders which extend radially from the body portion of the buffer and serve to anchor the buffer member in place. The butler member is preferably made of rubber, or rubber composition, but may be made of other material having the desired resilient qualities.
These butler members are to be mounted in a door post so aS to engage the edge of the door and absorb its vibrations. l. have found it very desirable to mount the binder member in place by providing a bufi'er chamber ,in 7,

The, radially projecting shoulders of the rib on the boiler member are compressed, so that the rib is forced through the opening, and these shoulders are lislQflfillOWGd. to expand behind the walls of the chamber at the sides of the opening so as to anchor the buffer member in place. The back wall of the chamber may engage the anchoring rib on the bufler'member and act as a. retaining plate or member. l have found that the best results are attained by providing the chamber and the opening in the angular portion of the door post, which acts as a stop for the edge of the door. When arranged in this way, the buffer member absorbs the vibrations longitudinally of the body, as well as transversely. in a metal. body construction, the chamber for the bufier member may be formed by applying a retaining plate or member to the inner surface oi the metal door post, behind an opehing formed in the door post for the buffer member. it is obvious that this bufier chamber may be either formed in the door post or formed in a separate member which is applied to and fastened in the proper position in the door post.
In the-accompanying drawings, in which I have illustrated a construction which constitutes one embodiment of my invention, I have shown an automobile body, 10, having the customary doors 11. I have shown apair of buffer members, 22, mounted in the door post indicated at 13, in Fig. T, In the construction illustrated, the door post, 13, has an inner flange, 12' and an outer flange or shoulder, 14, which may lie substantially parallel to the flange, 12, and at right angles to the face of the'door post, 13. The flange, 15, may extend at right angles to the shoulder, 14:, and parallel to the faceof the door post, 13. The side panel, 16, of the automobile body shell, may have its flange, 17, secured to the flange, 15. In this particular body construction, the door post is formed of a metal bar or stamping having the cross section shown. The buffer chamber may be formed by a plate which has a curved central ortion, 19, with upper and lower angular anges, 20 and 21, which lie against and may be secured, by. welding, to the inner surfaces of the portions, 13 and 14, of the door posts. An opening, 18,- is formed in-the door post, partly in the face, 13, and partly in the shoulder, 14, so that the opening is formed in the angular portion between these two parts. The retaining member, 19, may be fastened to the inner surfaces of the door post behind the o ening, 18, so that it resents its concave ace towards said opening.
The boiler member is formed of rubber or other resilient material and may-comprise the cylindrical body portion, 22, and the ragdially extending sector or rib, 23. This rib extends longitudinally of the butler member and has, at each side, the shoulders, 24:, which. may extend radially of the holder member. The side edges of the concave face of the plate, 19, abut the surfaces, 13 and 1 1-, respectively, a short distance from the sides of the opening, 18, as shown in Fig. ll. The bulfer member is inserted in place by engaging one of the shoulders, v24, of the sector-shaped rib, 23, behind one of the walls at the side of the opening, 8, and forcing the buffer member inwardly so as to compress the opposite shoulder, 2%, until it has passed through the opening, 18, after which it may expand freely and seat itself behind the wall at the opposite side of said opening, 18. In this position, the butler member is anchored in place and the curved surface of the sectorshaped rib, 23, will seat itself on. the concave face of the retaining member, 19.
In Figs. VT and VII, I have shown an embodiment of my invention which is particularly adapted for use in connection with wooden door posts such as are usual in composite automobile bodies. In these views the wooden door post, 25, is indicated in dotted lines, being rabbeted at 26 to receive the buffer. An angle plate, 27, may be fastened on the corner of the door post, 25, in any suitable manner and has an opening, 28, formed in the en lo of. the plate in the same way as the opening, 18, shown in the door post of Fig. I. A. bufier retaining member, 19, may be fastened to the back faces of the angle plate, 27, so as to form a bufier chamber, and a bufi'er member, 22, of rubber or resilient material is anchored in the chamber in the same way as described with refer ence to the preceding construction.
lVhen anchored in this position, the main cylindrical body portion of the buffer member projects from the angular portion of the door post, as shown in Fig. IT. The door,
11, has a shoulder, 25, which, in the closed position of the door, is parallel to the face, 13, of the door post, and an edge flange, 26, which, in the closed position of the door, is parallel to the shoulder or stop flange, 14-, of the door post. It will appear that, when the door is Brought to the closed position,a part of the buffer member, 22, will be compressed against the shoulder, 25, of the door and another part of the buffer member will be compressed against the edge fiange, 26. The result is that this buffer will be effective to absorb the vibrations longitudinally of the body, which would otherwise cause a rattle between the door and the door post, and the vibrations transversely of the body, which would otherwise cause a rattle between the inaaoov is effective to absorb practically all the vibrations which would otherwise cause a rattle between. the door and the door post.
It will be observed that the buffer memher, 22, is of uniform cross-section throughout its length. This is a feature of considerable importance, because the butter members may be moulded ina long strip which is afterward cut up into therequired lengths for the individual buffer members. This is a decided improvement over the construction shown in my co-pending application, which I have referred to, in which I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is:

A buffer structure for automobile doors including a member of angular crossseotion having an opening in the angle thereof, and a buffer member of resilient material positioned in said opening and having portions engaging behind the portions of said member forming the side edges of said opening.
