4 Claims.
The object of the present invention is to provide a metallic window structure in which the guideways for the sash are effectively maintained against accidental variation.'
- With the structure-now in general use, it has been found that the parts of which the window frame is made, are subject by reason of the jars and pressures against them, to creep out of position, thereby opening up the guideways with .consequent unoccupied space through which inltration of air can take place. The present structure is designed to obviate these difficulties.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional View through a window frame, embodying the present invention.
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view showing portions of the sashes in section.
Figure 3 is a sectional View of the parting strip l and a portion of the guide structure showing the method of securing the parting strip.
In the embodiment disclosed'the frame of the window includes a top member 3, a sill member 4, and side members 5. Y
Each side member consists of a box formed of sheet metal having a rear wall 6, an 4inner side wall 7 and an outer side wall 8 integral with the rear wall 6. The wall 7 terminates in a reversely flanged margin forming a hook 9. The Ywall 8 preferably has an oiset portion 10 with an inset face wall 11 terminating in an inwardly and rearwardly bent flange 12. The portion at said iiange constitutes one wall of the sash guideway 13.
A cooperating wall section 14 has an inturned flange 15au forming a hook that interts with the reverse ange or hook 9 of the box wall 7. This wall 14 has an inwardly and rearwardly turned portion 15 constituting the outer Wall of the other guideway 16. The portion 15 is extended into an angular internal wall 17 that overlies an oppositely extending wa11'18 having an angular portion 19 suitably fixed in the oiset portion 10 of the wall 8. The overlapping portions of the walls 17 and 18 are rearwardly ribbed, so that the wall 18 has in its outer face a longitudinal channel 19a that receives the rib 20 formed on the rear side of the wall 17. The parts are thereby interfltted or interlocked.
A parting strip 2()a is provided that is also of sheet metal and of tubular formation. This strip has a facing wall terminating in doubled anges 21 from which project rearwardly extending walls 22 having terminal inset flanges 23 that rest against the wall 17 on opposite sides inner walls of the guideways 13 and 16.
tion, and' it will be understood that various of the rib 20 and channel 19a in which it is engaged. Fastening screws 24, passing through the facing wall 20a, also pass through the wall 17 and are threaded into bosses 25 formed on the rear wall 18. The parting strip -is therefore securely fastened to the walls 17 and 18, and serves to secure said walls together 'and insure. the intertting engagementof the ribs 19 and 20. The outstanding flanges 21 constitute the The window sashes 26, which may be of any desired character, preferably have outstanding guides 27 that respectively voperate in the guideways 13 and 16. These guides 27 have suitable springs 28 serving to urge the guides against the 70 Walls of the guideways.
The side member structure has been found particularly eicacious in that the partscan be readily assembled and removed, and when inassembled relation, are effectively interlocked so 75.'. that the distance between the guideways 13 and 16 does not vary nor do the parts creep to leave open spaces at the sides of the sash guides 27. A material amount of air inltration is thereby prevented.
' From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantages of the herein described invention will be Aapparent to those skilled in the art Without further descripsecuring the parting strip in place and securing the members together in interlocked relation.
2. In a window-frame, the combination with a boxing having an inturned facing wall forming'one wall of a guide slot, said boxing having an internal wall extending behind said guide slot, of another and detachable facing wall forming a wall of a second guide slot and having an internal portion overlapping and interlocked with the rst internal wall, a parting strip located between the facing walls, and means for securing the parting stripin place.
-3. In a window-frame, the combination with a boxing having an inturned facing wall form- 119 ing one Wall of a guide slot, said boxing having an internal wall extending behind said guide slot, of another and detachable facing wall forming a wall of a second guide slot and having an internal portion overlapping the first internal wall, one of said overlapping portions having a groove and the other a rib engaged in the groove, a parting strip vlocated between the facing walls, and fasteners securing the parting strip to the overlapped portions of the internal walls and securing the rib in the groove.
4. In a window frame, the combination with outer guide members forming theouterwalls of ing located between the side Walls of the parting strip.
