4 Claims.
This invention relates to car door construction and particularly to a construction for providing weathertightness at the edges of car doors.
It is an object of this invention to provide a construction for car doors which will trap and discharge cinders, dust, rain, snow and the like before these reach the joint between the doors and the car wall.
A further object is to provide a construction of the character set forth above which shall eliminate one row of rivets and effect a reduction in weight.
Other objects of the invention will become clear as the description thereof proceeds.
In the drawings forming part of this specification:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary elevation of a sliding car door and the car wall adjacent to the rear edge thereof.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on line 3--3 of Fig. 2. I
Fig. 4 is a horizontal section at the meeting edges of double doors which embody the instant invention.
Referring first to the embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3 of the drawings, the reference numeral I designates a portion of a side wall of a railway box car. The side wall is of well known construction and for the purpose of describing the instant invention embodies a substantially channel shaped rear door post I I having a web I2, an inner flange I3 and an outer flange I4 to which metallic sheathing I5 is secured as by means of rivets l6. Nailing blocks I1 and I8 are secured to the post II in any desired manner. Inner wooden lining I9 is fastened to the nailing block I I so as to'lie flush with nailing block l8.
The door post II defines the rear edge of a door opening which is formed in each of the side walls of the car. I he door opening is adapted to be closed by means of a longitudinally sliding door 2| which is of well known construction and which for present purposes may be described as embodying a metallic panel 22 ofiset outwardly and rearwardly as indicated at 23 to provide a flange 24 which is parallel to the door. The panel is preferably reinforced by means of horizontal corrugations 25 which merge into the flange 24. The door embodies furthermore a substantially W-shaped reinforcing member 26 secured as by means of rivets 21 to flange 24 of the panel and a vertical backing plate 28 secured member 26 as by means of rivets 30..
2 as by means of rivets 29 to the panel 22 forwardly of the offset portion 23 and to the reinforcing These rivets serve as well to secure a substantially Z- shaped sealing member 3| upon the backing plate 28.
By reason of the instant invention the rear portion of the door hereinabove described is effectively sealed when the door is closed. To this end a metallic sealing strip 32 is secured to the rear door post II by means of the rivets I6.
The sealing strip 32 embodies a securing flange 33, an outwardly extending flange or web 34 and a rearwardly and outwardly inclined flange 35. As appears more clearly in Fig. 3 of the drawings the flange or web 34 is formed with a plurality of vertically spaced elongated slots 36.
The invention also utilizes a substantially channel-shaped strip 31 which embodies a securing flange 38 disposed between the flange 33 and sheathing I5 and secured to the door post I I by means of rivets I6. The Weatherstrip 31 also embodies an outwardly extending flange or web 39 and a rearwardly extending flange 40. With particular reference to Fig. 2 of the drawings, it will be apparent that the sealing strips 32 and 3'! are so related that the webs 34 and 39 are spaced apart and that the flanges and 40 are preferably in contact at their outer edges. A pocket or tubular formation II is thus formed which is accessible through the slots or openings 38. These slots in relation to the tubular formation face rearwardly.
With the door in closed position as illustrated in Fig. 2 the sealing strip 3| is in contact with the rearwardly and outwardly inclined flange 35 of the sealing strip 32 and cooperates therewith to draw the door inwardly toward the carside during the final closing movement of the door. This contact which occurs substantially outwardly of the series of slots or openings in the sealing strip 32 leaves these slots exposed so that dust, cinders, rain, snow, or the like, may readily enter pocket 4| through them. before these elements reach the joint between the door and the flange 40. The pocket 4| serves to trap these elements so that they willfall to the bottom of the pocket and be discharged outwardly of the car.
In Fig. 4 of the drawings the instant invention is illustrated in its application at the meeting edges of double doors customarily used upon box cars whose walls are formed with door openings 9i {Extraordinary width. These doors are known as main and auxiliary doors and slide in opposite directions to expose the door opening and toward each other in order to close the door opening, as is well known. The main door 42 is of known construction and embodies a metallic panel 43 similar to the panel 22 and a backing plate 44 similar to backing plate 28 which are secured respectively to flanges 45 and 46 of a substantially Z-shaped reinforcing member. Flange 46 is bent outwardly as shown at 41.
The auxiliary door 43 is also of known construction and embodies a metallic panel 49 similar to panel 22 and a backing plate 50 similar to backing plate 23. Panel 49 is secured to a flange 51 of a reinforcing and sealing member 52' which is flanged inwardly as shown at 53, then forwardly as indicated at 54, then outwardly as shown at 55, and then rearwardly and outwardly as indicated at 56. The auxiliary door 48 carries a post 51 which is secured to flange 54 onthe inside of the door. The post is substantially angular in section and embodies a. securing flange 5'8 and an inwardly and transversely extending flange 59. A nailing block 69 is secured customarily by means of bolts to the flanges 58 and 59.
It will be observed that flange 58 extends rearwardly of flange 55 so that in combination with the latter flange and with flange 56 provides a substantially channel shaped recess which is l adapted to receive the forward marginal portionof the main door 42 when the doors are closed. In this position of the doors, flanges 4'! and 55 are in abutment.
In accordance with the instant invention the flange 58 of the movable auxiliary door post 5'! is formed with a series of slots or openings 6i similar to the slots 36. These slots are disposed so that they lie behind the joint between the flanges 4'5 and 55. is rabbeted as indicated at 62 so as to provide a pocket 63 behind the slots 6i. As in the previously described embodiment of the invention the slots 5| provide access to the pocket 63 for dust, cinders, rain or snow which may find their way between the flanges 4'! and 55 where they are trapped and discharged through the bottom of the pocket before they can enter the interior of the car through the door opening.
It will be apparent that numerous changes and modifications in the details of the invention will be clear to those skilled in the art. It is intended, therefore, that all such modifications and changes be comprehended within this invention, which is to be limited only by the scope of the claims appended hereto.
I claim:
1. In a railway car having a wall provided with a door opening and a door post at the rear edge of the door opening having a rearwardly extending outer flange, a sliding door adapted to close said opening, vertically extending sealing means for the rear edge of said door secured to and along said wall adjacent to the rear edge of said door opening, said sealing means comprising inner and outer rearwardly facing substantially channel-shaped strips, said strips having inner and outer rearwardly extending contacting flanges and outwardly extending spaced webs, said inner flanges being secured to said postflange, said outerflange of said outer strip being inclined outwardly, a plurality of vertically spaced elongated slots formed in the web of said outer strip, and a sealing member on the rear margin of said door, said member engagin 5,914.
The nailing block 60 inclined flange outwardly of said slots when said door is closed.
2. In a railway car having a wall provided with a door opening and a door post at the rear edge of the door opening having a rearwardly extending outer flange, a sliding door adapted to close said opening, vertically extending sealing means for the rear edge of said door secured to and along said wall adjacent to the rear edge oi said door opening, said sealing means comprising inner and outer rearwardly facing substantially channel-shaped strips, said strips having inner and outer rearwardly extending contacting flanges and outwardly extending spaced webs,
said inner flanges being secured to said post flange, a plurality of vertically spaced openings formed in the web of said outer strip, and a sealing member on the rear margin of said door, said member engaging said sealing means outwardly of said openings when said door is closed.
3. In a railway car having a wall provided with a door opening and a door post at the rear edge of the door opening having a rearwardly extending outer flange, a sliding door adapted to close said opening, vertically extending sealing means for the rear edge of said door secured to and along said post flange adjacent to the rear edge of said door opening, said sealing means comprising a tubular position extending outwardly from said post, a plurality of vertically spaced rearwardly facing openings formed in said tubular portion, and a sealing member on the rear margin of said. door, said member engaging said sealing means outwardly of said openings when said door is closed.
4. In a railway car having a wall provided with a door opening and a door post at the rear edge of the door opening having a rearwardly extending outer flange, a sliding door adapted to close said opening, a vertically extending sealing strip secured to and along said post flange adjacent to the rear edge of said door opening, said sealing strip having a flange extending outwardly from said wall carrying a rearwardly and outwardly inclined flange spaced from said wall, a plurality of vertically spaced openings formed in said outwardly extending flange, a vertically extending sealing member secured to and along said post flange adjacent to the rear edge of said door opening, said member having a portion extending outwardly from said wall in forwardly spaced relationship to said sealing strip, said member cooperating with said seal ing strip to. form a pocket and close off said open ings from said door opening, and a sealing flange on the rear margin of said door, said sealing flange engaging said inclined flange outwardly of the openings in said outwardly extending flange when. said door is closed.
