RATION OF PENNSYLVANIA 'I'RESSED METAL noon Application filed .Tanuary 17, 1930. Serial Nd. 421,374.
My invention relates to doors for vehicle bodies, and more particularly to doors adapted to be fabricated out of pressed metal.
It is an objectofmy invention to provide a door of this class which is simple in constrnction, easy of assembly, and light in weight, and at the same time most strong and durable.
It is a further object of my invention to provide a door of this class having a simplified construction around the window opening therein, which permits the use therewith of the usual removable Window moulding at its inner side.
These and other objects and advantages are attained by the novel construction shown in a preferred form. in the attached draw- W ings, and described in detail in the following specification. I
In the drawings,. V

the top, and the hinge side of the window opening.
The door of the invention is constructed inthe main of outer and inner panel stampings designated generally by the reference numerals 10 and 11-. Y A
The outer panel stamping may comprise, as 'shown in Fig. 1, a unitary stamping forming 1 the outer face of the door provided at; its
outer edges with laterally extending flanges 12. At thewindow opening it'is formed with a suitably contoured inwardly extending flange 13 forming the moulding. Adjacent from to permit the free vertical movement of the sliding window panel, the flange 13' the plane of the window, but spaced thereis formed with the outwardly extending flanges 14; directedtoward the outer margins of the panel and forming, at sides and top,
the outer wall of the glass run channel. At
the bottom, the flange 14 is inclined outwardly towardthe body of the panel in a. usualmanner.
At sidesand top the flanges 14 are extendangles to the planeof the paneland form- 'ing the bottom of the glass run channels, At the base of the glassrun channel these extensions are formed with spaced offset porpurpose to be presently de- The inner panel stamping may comprise the main body portion substantially in the inner plane of the door and against which the upholstery may be applied and the continuous outwardly extending flange 17 forming the jamb rail portion of the door. At thelock side of the door this jamb railportion is formed of the usual stepped construction, as indicated at 18. A slight offset, as
19, may also be provided at the top for stiifening and strengthening-the door structure.
At the sides and top the inner margin of the jamb rail portion 17 'ofthedoor'is reversely bent on a smoothly rounded curve at glass run channel of the completed door, and of a length to overlap the edge of the in- 20, forming a marginal flange 21 extending outwardlysubstantially in the plane of the wardly extending flange 15 of the outer panel ably reinforced by a reinforcing, strip 24:.of heavier gauge'than the metal of the panel to make a secure anchorage for the hinges. The downward extensions 25 and 26 of the glass run channels are also secured to the jamb face portions 17 of theinner-panel prior to the assembly with the outer panel.
The inner and outer panel stampings are assembled in their outer margins in the usual manner by crimping the outer marginal flanges 12 of the outer panel stamping over the outer marginal door overlap flange 27 of lap.

opening, and one which permits a smooth and pleasing finish both on theinside and out side of the door. The reversely bent flange 21 of the inner panel is braced to the outer transverse jamb rail portion 17 through its connection with the edge of the flange 15 of latter through the offsets 16 with the jamb rail portion 17, at both the sides and top of the window opening. This construction provides astrong seat for the securement of the inner removable moulding, not shown, and by providing means whereby the window panel may be ,inserted in the door fromthe inside and not from'the top, it avoids the weakening of the top rail of the door by a slot for the removal of the window. Also, the formation of the inner and outer panel stampings around the window opening in the manner The ofl'set portions, 16 of the flanges 15 of the outer panel stamping lie against the described can be accomplished by relatively few simple die operations.
What I claim is: 1. An outer panel for vehicle doors comprising a unitary stamping havinga window opening formed therein, said panel being ex- ..tended. inwardly at the window opening to form moulding, and then flange d in the plane 7 rail built up of inner and outer stampings, the inner stamplng having a transverse web portion forming the amb portionof the door and its inner edge reversely bent, the reversely bent portion being spaced from the transverse web portion, the outer panel of the panel and transversely to form the stamping being formed along one margin of angular form to provide the outer side and bottom of a glass run channeland flanged along its other margin to secure it tothe outer margin of the inner stamping, the portion set outwardly at spaced points and secured forming the bottom ofthe glass run being ofl 'to'the transverse web portion of the inner stamping, and secured along its marginto the reversely bent portion of the innerpanel. 3. In combination, in a door structure, a unitary inner panel stamping extending about a window opening and having a con tmuous unbroken transversely 'extendlng jamb rail portion at the sides and top of said opening, the inner margin of said jamb rail portion being reversely bent outwardly at sub- 'stantially right angles to the plane of the door, a removable window molding on the infner panel, and an outer panel extending about said opening and having an integral beyond said inner panel margin in the plane. of the door whereby a window mayfonly be received between said panels in said opening Iinner marginal portion extending inwardly By this construction, it w ll be noted that "laterally to the plane of'the door and held in place by said removablewindow molding on the inner panel. o
4. A pressed metal vehicle door havinga f window opening comprising inner and outer I v panel stampings flanged and secured together 7 the outer panel and the 00111180131011 of the in their outer margins, the innerstamping jbeing'transversely extended toform the jamb 1 7 face portions of the door and having its margin at the window opening reversely bent in spaced relation to the jamb face portion thereof, the outer panel being extended in wardly at thesides and top of the window opening in. offset relation to said reversely bentportion of the inner panel but formed alongjits margin with an angle portion forming the outer side and bottomof a glass run channel, the inner margin of said angular portionibemg secured to the reversely bent portion of the inner panel and arranged in substantially the same transverse plane and being provided with ofiset portion through which it is secured to the jamb face portions of the inner stamping.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature.
GEORGE TRAUTVETTER.
