Description

Oct. 14, 1924. 1,511,422
C. H. PIEPER DENTAL APPARATUS Filed March 21 1923 ill Patented (lot. 14, 1924.
UNITED STATES OSCAR I-I. PIEPER, OF ROCHESTER, L EVI YORK.
DENTAL APPARATUS.
Application filed. March 21, 1823.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR H. PIEPER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dental Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference numerals marked thereon.
This invention relates to dental apparatus, and more particularly to equipment supporting means such as trays for holding hand implements, one object of the invention being to provide a simple, efiicient, durable and convenient instrument tray of the general variety of that disclosed in Letters Pat out No. 1,326,356, granted jointly to A. F. Pieper and myself April 26, 1921, for unitary dental apparatus. More, specifically stated, the invention has the further object of providing a device of the above character in which a tray body is effectively supported and retained in position on a support in a conveniently detachable manner and is advantageously constructed not only for cooperation with the support but also for safety against injury when compactly assembled in quantity for shipment. To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a dental equipment apparatus or stand provided with an instrument tray embodying the present invention;
Figure 2 is an enlarged top plan view of the instrument tray, and
Figure 3 is a sectional elevation on the line 3-?) of Figure 2.
Similar reference numerals throughout the several views indicate the same parts.
The invention is shown in the present instance, by way of illustration, as embodied in conjunction with an equipment supporting stand or colunm 5 adapted to be located at the side of a dental chair opposite the operator and carrying the various equipment desired, as fully shown and described in the said Letters Patent.
Serial No. 626,574.
ing flange 11, thus providing a convenient tray or table for supporting the various hand instruments or tools required in dentistry work. The under side 12 of the tray is formed with an abutment means preferably in the form of a projecting circular flange 13, for purposes which will more fully appear hereafter.
The supporting means for the tray body proper comprises, preferably, a sheet metal plate or disk 14% having an upwardly turned flange 15 at its periphery and within the latter a plurality of spaced cushioning elements, preferably in the form of hemispherical rubber studs 16 secured in place on plate 14 by rivet members 17 or in any other well known or suitable manner. These studs are located for engagement with the under side of the tray body 10 at its abutment means, for the purpose of supporting the tray and also positioning it when placed on the support and retaining it securely in such position in use. In the present instance the studs are located on a circle so as to engage the outer side of the tray flange 13 which fits snugly and securely within the circular studs, without coming in contact with the metal plate 14. The tray is thus not only securely retained in position but is cushioned by the rubber stud bodies to avoid the contact of glass on metal.
The tray support or plate 1 1 has secured at its center, as by means of screws or rivets 18, a hub 19 having a socket 20 in which is rotatably received the upper end of a short spindle (not shown) carried by the free end of the auxiliary arm 9. In this manner the tray and its support are rotatably and removably secured on the supporting arm so that they may be detached for cleaning or for replacement by other parts, as may be desired.
It is apparent from the above description and drawings that the tray body 10 is not only eflectively supported and retained on a cushioned seat, but may be conveniently rotated in use to bring the. desired instruments into reach of the dentist and it may also be conveniently removed and replaced on its supporting means. The projecting flange 13 not only serves to locate or center and retain the tray on its support as de scribed above, but has the additional function. 01f; spacing the tray bodies. When a plurality of the latter are placed one upon anotheror stacked in, compact form forshipment, thereby preventing contact of the peripheral edges of adjoining trays which would tend to chip and deface them.
The construction. of the tray and. its support is simple and convenient and durable incharacter, and therefore economical as-to. both manufacture and use.
Lclaim as my invention:
1. A dental apparatus comprising an in strument trayhaving av flange projecting from. its under side, and a. supportprovided with cushioning means disposed for engagement with the under side. of said tray at saidflangeto supportsaid tray in position.
2.. A dental apparatus coinprising'an instrument tray having a flange projecting from its under side, and a; supporting plate provided With spaced studs of cushioning materiald-isposed for engagement with the under side'of said tray at said flange to support said tray in position on said. plate.
3. A, dental apparatus comprising an inwith the. underside" of said; tray;- atv spaced; points about said flange to support; said tray in: position, and means for supporting.-
said. plate.
5, In. a dental apparatus, the: com binae tion. of. a. supporting.arm, disk. rotatably supponted-onsaid arm, ail-instrument tray having circularv abutment means. on, its.-
under side, and a plurality of elementsozf cushioning material disposed; on said disk:
for supporting and positioning; engagement with saidtra-y adjacent said flange.
6 In a dental apparatus, the combination of an instrument tray, having; circular flange projectingfrom; itsunder side, a sup.- porting disk. provided. with cushioning elements in spaced relationthereon forengagement with the under. side of said tray adj acent said, flange, a'supporting arm, and means rotatably supporting said disk on. said arm.
