P. PE1-20L@ MACHINE VISE Filed Oct. 6, 1923 l j :I I) z l L L l C d a f y@ d f Qnvenfor Pf Pezo ZJ' Patented ct. 14, 1924.
UNITED' STATES PAUL PETZOLD, OF GERA, GERMANY,
MACHINE VISE.
Application led October 6, 1923. Serial No. 666,997.
T0 all whom t may concer/lt.'
Be it known that I, PAUL PETZOLD, a citizen of Germany, residing at Gera (Reuss), Untermhauserstr. 58, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machine Vises (application for which has been filed in Germany, July 20, i921), of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention has reference to machine vises, and in particular to devices of this kind in which the carriage on which the clamping jaws are mounted is disposed so as to be rockable on a vertical and a horizontal axis. VVit-h this form of construction of the vise the piece of work .may be easily adjusted in any desired inclined position, and without in any way altering the position of the piece of work between the clamping jaws. It is a further object of my invention to provide a vise of this kind adaptable for work requiring very high stresses, and in view thereof in a preferred form of construction l provide a carriage having substantially the shape of a cylindrical segment and on which trunnions are arranged coaxially disposed with relation to the cylindrical surface, the said cylindrical segment being preferably supported by a trough shaped foundation rotatable on a vertical axis upon the machine base, and provided with bearings coaxially disposed with relation to the curvature of the supporting foundation, and adapted for the journaling of the trunnions of the carriage or slide. Other important `objects and advantages of my invention will appear as the specification proceeds and from an inspection of the drawings.
An embodiment of the principles of my invention is shown by way of example on the accompanying drawing in Figure 1 in side view and partly in vertical longitudinal section; Figure 2 is a plan view; Figure 3 is a side elevation and Figure 4L is a vert-ical cross section on the broken line Si- B Upon the base plate a a trough shaped foundation support b is mounted so as to be rotatable upon the vertical central axis. In the base plate a there is provided a cylindrical recess c into which a cylindrical projection d of the foundation o is adapted to enter. The connection of the foundation b with the base plate a is effected by two screws e the heads of which are movable in a circular annular recess f of the base plate a. Two holes g are provided in the base plate for the insertion of thescrews. The trough shaped foundation I) is provided with a flanged portion L which in the preferred form of construction may carry a graduated scale.
The support or foundation b at both of its ends constitutes a bearing i coaxially dis'- posed with relation to the curvature of the foundation o. In the bearings 'i and by means of the studs or trunnions c the slide or carriage m is mounted provided with the jaws n, and consisting of a cylindrical segment o supported upon the trough shaped foundation, and also comprising two upwardly directed portions p on which the trunnions la and a frame g are arranged. Upon the longitudinal sides of the frame g the jaws n are arranged which are secured b-y plates 1^ againstbeing lifted olf from the frame g, the sides of the frame preferably partially engaging their vertical sides. A spindle s with right and left handed screw threads serves for the adjustment of the jaws and is provided at each of its ends with a four-cornered head for the engagement of a wrench, key or the like. Recesses la are provided in the trunnions 7c for facilitating the engagement of the key or the like with the heads.
A graduated scale 15 is provided for determining the amount of rocking of the carriage upon its horizontal axis which coincides with the axis of the shaft or spindle s. The screws e serve for the locking of the foundation p in position after its adjustment around the vertical axis. The screws y serve for the locking in position of the trunnions lf2. In order to effect the adjustment in the most convenient manner the supporting foundation o may be provided with a worm wheel u adapted to be engaged with a spindle c, and in a similar manner one of the trunnions if: may be provided with a worm wheel w engageable with a spindle It is to be understood that the invention is not confined .to the particular embodiment herein shown and described merely by way of example and for the purposes of illustration and explanation, but it is susceptible of various other embodiments and modifications to adapt the invention to varying conditions and to the convenience of the operator,4 and v*Without deviating from the spirit ofkm invention as "pointed out in the appended e aims.
