JOHN B. FR-EY$INGER, '13 STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOB TO THE YALE 8t TOWNE IMANUFACTUEING- COMPANY, OF STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT.
PADLOCK.
Application filed March 5, 1923.
This invention relates to improvements in.
padlocks and more particularly to such as embody an adjustable shackle.
It is an object of my invention to obviate the use of ratchet mechanism and the objections incident thereto, in an adjustable shackle padlock, and to provide means whereby fine adjustment of the shackle may be effected and the shackle held against outward movement from the position to which.
it may be adjusted, except when released with the use of a proper key.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings,-
Figure 1 is a view in longitudinal section and partly in elevation of a padlock showing an embodiment of my invention.
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view.
Figures 3 and 4 are vertical sectional views, and
Figures 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 are views illustrating certain modifications.
The casing of a padlock is shown at 1 and the shackle at 2,both legs of said shackle being movable, in the embodiments of my invention shown in the drawings, through the casing 1. The legs of. the shackle may be circular in cross section as indicated in Figure 2 or they may be angular in cross section as indicated in Figures 3 and i, the connecting member of the shackle preferably having the same cross section as that of the legs or parallel members.
A key operated structure which, in the drawings, I have shown as a cylinder lock 3 of the pin tumbler type, but it will be understood that other construction of key opcrated means may be employed in lieu of a cylinder or pin tumbler lock. The casing of the lock 3 is suitably secured within the Serial No. 622,952.
casing l of the padlock and said lock casing 3 is provided with a head 4 having downwardly and inwardly extending cam faces 5 at respective ends. A slide or carrier 6 is mounted witl'iin-the casing l and provided intermediate of its ends with an elongated slot 7, into which a pin 8 carried by the, rotatable member of the lock or key operated means 3 enters. The slide or carrier 6 is provided at its respective sides with depending fianges 9 and each of these flanges is made near its respective ends with diagonal slots 10. The journals 11 of clutch rollers 12 are mounted in the elongated slots of the slide or carrier so as to be positioned close to the respective legs or members of the shackle. One of the flanges of the slide or carrier may be made with a notch 13 into which one arm of a spring 14E enters, the intermediate portion of said spring being coiled on a pin 15 projecting from the lock casing 3 and its other end bears against a lug 16 on said lock casing 3. The spring 14 thus disposed serves to move the slide or carrier to the right, as viewed in Figure 1, and thereby cause the clutch rollers (by reason of the inclined or diagonal slots 10), to move upwardly and become wedged between the cam faces 5 and the shackle legs, thus clutching the shackle and preventing outward movement of the same. It is evident that with the construotion and arrangement of the parts above described, fine adjustment of the shackle relatively to the casing of the padlock may be effected and the use of ratchet mechanism will be obviated.
When a proper key is inserted into the plug of the lock 3 and turned, motion will be imparted to the slide or carrier and the latter will be moved to the left as viewed in Figure 1, permitting the clutch rollers to move downwardly on the cam faces and thus the shackle will be released.
Instead of making the shackle circular in cross-section, it may be formed with in ner flat faces 17 as indicated in Figure 5. When a shackle having legs circular in cross section is employed, the clutch rollers in stead of being made cylindrical as shown in Figure 2, may be formed with an intermediate groove 18 as indicated in Fig ure 6 to accommodate the rounded contour of the shackle legs and the cams which the rollers engage may have the form shown at 19 in Figure 6 for the accommodation of the grooved rollers.
In the embodiment of my invention shown in Figures 7 8 and 9, the head 20 on the lock casing 3 may comprise two relatively movable parts as shown in Figure 8, each of said parts having an inclined, rounded cam wall 21 between which and the shackle legs, steel balls 22 are disposed and said shackle legs are made with rounded grooves 23 for the accommodation of said balls. The grooves 23 may be extended throughout the inner face of the connecting member of the shackle legs; The rotatable member of the lock 3 is provided with two pins 24C-24 which enter slots in the respective members of the two head 20 so that when the rotatable member of the lock 3 is turhedinotion white imparted to the members of said head to move them 'respe'c tively in opposite directions Springs 25 are disposed under the clutch balls 22 so as to press them upwardly and cause them to wedge between the cam faces of the clutch head members and the shackle legs, thus clutching the latter and preventing outward movement of the shackle. \Vhn the lock plug is'turned with the use of a proper key, the members of the head 20 will be so move as to relieve the clutching action of the balls and thus the shackle will be re leased. The members of the shackle may have a cross section such as indicated in Figure 8' or they may have a cross section r which is circular except for the groove 21,
as indicated in Figure 10. If ass-red, the members of the shackle may have an angular cross-section (except for the groove 21) r as shown Figure 11. 1
said cam device and the shackle, spring" means operable to wedge said clutch means between the cam means and the shackle to hold the latter against outward movement and means whereby the key actuated means may be operated to release the shackle from said clutch means.
2. "In a padlock, the combinationjwith a casing anda shackle,-,of key actuated means within the casing, a head Withinthe casing having cam faces, rollers between said cam faces and the shackle, a carrier for said rollers operable by the movable member of the key actuated means and havinginclined slots receiving the journals of said rollers, and a spring for moving said carrier iira. direction to crowd the rollers between said cam faces and the shackle.
In testimony whereof, I havesigned this specification in the presence of two "subscribing witnesses. V
