J. RAU
CREEPER Filed Feb. 16. 1923 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 Fatented Sent ittl, 1924,
UNITED STATES JOHN RAU, OF BELLEVILLE, ILLINOIS.
CREEPER.
Application filed. February 16, 1923.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I JOHN RAU a citizen of the United States, residing at Belleville,
in the county of St. Clair and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Creeper, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wheeled trucks, and more particularly wheeled trucks commonly known as creepers.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a foldable creeper, whereby the same may be compacted into a small article to facilitate the storing or carrying thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide a sectional creeper, wherein the sec tions may be folded one upon the other.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter de scribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a creeper constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view thereof disclosing the creeper in a folded condition.
Figure 3 is a side elevational view of the creeper in its extended position.
Figure 4 is an end elevational view thereof.
Figure 5 is a fragmental bottom plan view of the creeper.
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken on line (3-6 of Figure 3, and disclosing the sections folded, in dotted lines.
Figure 7 is an enlarged fragmental sectional view disclosing the manner of securing the hinges tothe sections.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the creeper includes a body portion comprising hingedly connected boards 5.
As shown, hinges 6 connect one of the side boards with the intermediate board, in such a manner that the intermediate board may swing upwardly and lie directly on the adj acent board which is connected thereto by the hinges 6.
Hinges 7 connect the n r d a board Serial No. 519,438.
with the opposed outer board, the hinges 7 being disposed on the under sides thereof so that when the intermediate board is moved to a position as indicated in dotted lines in Figure 6, the opposed'outer board may fold into position directly over the intermediate board.
When these bars 9 are swung to their active positions, the weight of the body o the operator is suiiicient to prevent movement of the bars 9 with respect to the body portion, while the creeper is being pushed under a motor vehicle.
The head rest is indicated at 11 and is independent of the keeper, so; that the head rest may be readily removed to permit the device to be folded, and at the same time permit the head rest to be adjusted over the upper surface of the body portion to facilitate the use of the creeper.
What. I claim as new is:
A creeper comprising a body portion formed of a plurality of members including outer members and a central member, hinge members having connection with one of the outer members and the inner member, adjacent to the upper edges thereof, hinge members for connecting the opposite outer member and inner member at points adjacent to the lower edges thereof, whereby the members may be folded one upon the other, transversely ex ending members supported at the ends of the body portion, said transversely extending members having pivotal connection with the body portion at one of their ends, said transversely extending members adapted to support the ends of the body portion, and rollers carried by the transversely extending members.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN BAU. Vitnesses:
WM. E. BORN, Jr., l5. A. LAUTZ.
