Description

a. D. DEAN.
Screw-Plates.
v ATTORNEYS.
IINITEID STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE 1). DEAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR To FRANK c. GREEN,
OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SCREW-PLATES.
Specificaticn forming part of Letters Patent No. 151,0] 0, dated May 19, 1874; application filed April 25, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE D. DEAN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Screw and Guide Plates, of which the following is a specification:
The object of this invention is to furnish more convenient and efficient means for cutting screw-threads on gas-pipes, in the operation of putting such pipes into buildings, than has hitherto been known.
I11 furnishing buildings with gas-pipes and fixtures, the pipes are necessarily frequently cut to adapt them to the required length, and screw-threads have to be cut thereon. This has hitherto been done with the ordinary screwplate, two or three plates being used to suit the various sizes of pipe, and those not well adapted for the purpose.
My invention consists in a screw or die plate, in which is combined all the standard sizes and threads used for the purpose, with a guide for each die, the dies and guide-holes being arranged in a convenient and compact form.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side view. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of Fig. 2, taken on the line 00 00.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This screwplate is a rectangularshaped square box, composed of two guide-plates, A and B, two dieplates, G and 1), two heads, F F, and handles G G, which latter are screwed into or otherwise attached to the heads. The
two guide=plates A and B are cast, of any suit= able metal, with the heads, but they may be made of wrought-iron or steel, and be put to gether with screws or rivets, if desired. The die-plates G D are made of steel, and confined to the heads with screws H, so that they can be readily removed, in case repairs or removal is necessary.
The guide=holes I, it will be seen, are directly opposite the dies, so that in applying the plate to a pipe it is held steady, and in the proper position for cutting the thread.
In Fig. 2 the plate is seen applied to a pipe as when in use.
J represents the pipe.
The plate is applied in the same manner for each of the several dies and guides.
Having this screwplate, the gas-fitter is provided for cutting screws on any-sized pipes without change or annoyance, thus saving much valuable time, while being enabled to perform the work in a superior manner.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A screw-plate or die-stock, constructed as shown and described-that is, with the dieplates and guide-plates combined to form a rectangular-shaped box, square in cross-section, with the dies and guide-holes arranged as and for the purposes described.
GEORGE D. DEAN.
