UNITED STATES PATENT FRANK' ARMSTRONG, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT.
STOCK AND one.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Iietters Patent No. 286,673, dated October 16, 1.883.
Application filed April it, 1883. (in) model.)
f all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK ARMSTRONG, a
Q citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, 11 ve invented certain new and useful Improvements ina Stock and Die; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. 1
My invention relates to certain novel and useful improvements in the construction of screw-cutting dies and plates, and has for its object to so form" the cuttingdies that each die shall be adapted to cut threads ateach end; also to simplify the construction of the stock so, that the latter shall be adapted to contain the dies without the usual die recess or box; and with these ends in view my invention consists in tapping or cutting the threads in the dies at both ends thereof, also in constructing the stock with flanges or ways open at both ends, all of which will hereinafter be fully explained.
In order that those skilled in the art to which my invention 'appertains may more fully understand how to make and use my im provement, I will proceed to describe the same in detail, referring by letters to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure-1 is aplan ortop view ofmy improved stock and die; Fig. 2, a central vertical longitudinal section of the same; and Fig. 3, a detail View of the dies.
Similar letters denote like parts in the several figures.
Prior to my invention the dies have been confined within an independent die-box or within the ordinary die-recess in the'stock,
the object being merely to keep the dies in position during their operation. In my improvement the dies are held between flanged portions or ways A of the stock B.
C are lugs located between-the flanged portions or ways at each end thereof, and D are adjnstingscrews passedthrough said lugs for the purpose of setting the dies against the pipe or other surface to be out.
l E are dies provided with screws F for atta ching them to the stock resting on the bed G of the stock. These dies are tapped, as seen in the drawings, at both ends, so that by simply reversing the positions of the ends of the dies a second cutting-surface is had, which is a great advantage, especially when pipes of different sizes are to be cut, or when the cutting surfaces on one end of the die have become dull.
The operation of my improvement is as follows: The dies are placed within the flanged portions or'ways A, and the screws F passed through said dies into the stock in such manner as to permit setting the diesforward ontothe pipe or other surface to be out. For this purpose a slight play between the shanks of said screws and the screw-holes in the dies is allowed. After the dies have been adjusted by means of the adjusting-screws D to the proper operative position, the screws F are tightenedand the device is ready for cutting pipe.
By the use of the opened flanged portions or ways I am enabled to confine the dies equally as well as by a die box" or recess, while at the same time the manufacture of the stock is rendered far simpler and more economical, since the inside surfaces of the flanges or ways, against which the dies bear, may be more accurately and economically finished; and it is necessarythat said surfaces should be smooth boxes and recesses, hereinbefore referred to, great difficulty has been met with in accomplishing this result without comparatively great expenditure of time and money.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and-desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv 1. In a stock for dies, the flanged portions or ways upon its surface open at the ends, and adapted to confine the dies, substantially as set forth and described.
2. A stock, having upon its surface flanged portions or ways open at the ends, iii combination with a die having two cutting-surfaces at each end, substantially as described.
3. A stock for dies having flanged portions and regular; and heretofore in the closed or Ways upon its surface open atthe ends, In testimony whereof Ia'ffixmy signature in and lugs provided with adj ustingscrews, subpresence of two Witnesses.
stantially as set forth; V
' 4. The stock B, having flanged portions 01' FRANK ARMSTRONG. Ways A, and lugs G with adjusting-screws D, r
in combination with the dies E, adapted to be \Vitnesses:
secured to the stock substantially as set forth CLEM NT GOULD,
and described. F. W. SMITH, Jr.
