To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY L. F1sHER,-a citizen of the United States, residing at Waynesboro, Franklin county, and State 0f Pennsylvania, have invented and discovered certain new and useful Improvements 1n Cutter-Heads, of which the following is a specification.
My said invention consists in an improved construction of hand operated dies for cutting threads on pipe, bolts, etc., wherein a construction is provided in which a cutter or Chaser is used of that type having its cutting grooves extendingv longitudinally thereof and with its cutting face set tangentially to the work, and also wherein the die will automatically open when the work is nished, all as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

In said drawings the portions marked A represent the body or frame of the device, B-B1 the sliding cutter holders, and C the cutters or chasers.
The frame A is of an appropriately formed casting for the purpose having handles a mounted in sockets in Aits ends and j extending outwardly a sufficient distance to inserted through a slot therein and engaging afford the required leverage in operation.
It is also formed with a' central perforation in which is mounted an adjustable guide bushing 13 for receiving andfguiding the work. Said bushing is suitably supported by members secured and adjustedby screws 27 and 28.
The cutter holder B is mounted by means' of a dove-tailed connection as best shown in Fig. 3, to slidel on said body -`A and has a standard` 10 on its outer` end to the upper end of which is pivoted a locking bar 11 on a pivot 12. The cutter holder B1 is similarlymounted on the body A and at its outer end carries anengaging latch part 14, adjustably mounted thereon by means of a cap-screw 15 with said cutter holder B1. A stop screw 16 is mounted in an adjacent part of said cut- 'ter holder in line with the horizontal part of the latch 14 and is adapted to limit the forward adjustment of said latch. The pivoted bar'll is formed with a head 16 and a neck part 17, the neck part being adapted to eX- tend through a slot in the bifurcated upright end of latch 14 while the head part 16 is formed with a series of shoulders adapted to engage with said latch 17 and secure the cutter holders in position to close the die. Stiff coiled springs 18 are interposed between the adjacent ends of the cutter holders B and B1 and tend to normally force them apart. j
The cutters C are of the well known Landis. type and mounted in the cutter holders as best illustrated in-Fig. 4. It will be noted by referring to said gure that the cutter is formed with a dove-tailed shoulder near its outer edge and with a beveled inner edge extending from its base to the serrated edge. This beveled inner edge rests upon a correspondingly beveled shoulder in the cutter holder B. A securing plate 29 having dovetail shaped edges is mounted in a recess in the outer edge of the cutter holder, one of the dove -tail shaped edges engaging with the .correspondingly formed shoulder A reamer head 19 is mounted in pivot bar.

The head 16 of said bar 11y is formed with a cam face 20 between two shoulders 21 and 22, on one side andy on the other side is formed with a similar cam face 23 between two shoulders 24 and 25. A second reamer head 26 is also preferably mounted on the opposite side of bar 11 in line with head 19.
In operation the work guiding bushing 13 is adjusted and secured by means of the set screws 27 and 28 operating the appropriate supports, and the die is closed by engaging the shoulder 21 of the head 16 with the outer face of the latch part 14. The operation of cutting thus proceeds until the end of the pipe contacts with the reamer 19, which .serves to ream out the bur on the interior reamer 19. Said adjusting of the pipe end, and a continuation of the operation of the cutter head also operates to force bar 11 outwardly, disengaging the shoulder 21 of head 16 from the straight outer face of latch part 14 and permitting the cam part 20 to slide over the tapered edge of said latch part until shoulder 22 comes in contact with said latch, the springs 18 operating to separate the cutter holders and open the die to this extent, which permits the die to be slid off the work and avoid backing it oii'l as is usual.
By reversing bar 11 the shoulders 24 and 25 and cam face 28 will be brought into the position respectively of the corresponding shoulders and cam face 21, 22 and 20, and the reamer 26 will kbe brought to the position of parts on the opposite side of said bar are formed and arranged to accommodate work of a different size and by this means a singletool is adapted for operation on two sizes of work. By forming bar 11 rectangular four sizes of work can be provided for, as will be readily understood.
The adjustment of the die for different sizes of work is accomplished by means of latch part 14 as before described.
Having thusl fully described my said in vention what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A hand-operated cutter-headfor cutting screw-threads comprising a frame, cutters forming'the die mounted on supports to move and operate tangentially to the surface of the work, said supports mounted on said frame to move toward and from each other, means for normally holding said cutter supports apart, a lever for locking said cutter supports in closed position, and means associated with the lever operated by contact with the work for automatically releasing the locking means and opening the die when said work is finished, substantially as set forth.
2. A hand-operated cutter-head comprising a frame, cutter slides mounted thereon, cutters mounted on said slides, means interposed between said slides for normally forcing them apart, a pivoted locking lever for securing them with the die closed, a reamer positioned on saidlever to contact with the end of the work as it approaches nished position whereby contact therewith operates to move the bur and unlatch the die, substantially as set forth.
3. A hand operated cutter-head comprising a body, cutter slides mounted thereon, cutters on said slides, means for normally forcing said cutter slides apart, and a locking lever for securing them together pivoted to one of said slides and adapted to latch into engagement with the other, substantially as set'forth.
4. A hand operated cutter head comprising a frame, a central guide for the work in said frame, cutter slides on said frame, means for normally holding said slides apart, a locking lever engaging each of said slides for securlng them together, and a central abutment arranged on said lever in line with the work for contacting therewith to unlatch said slides when the work is completed, substantially as set forth.
5. A hand operated cutter-head comprising a frame, slides thereon, cutters on said slides, a bar engaging said slides for locking them together, and a reamer mounted on said bar in line with the work foi` engaging said work as it reaches its finishing point, whereby said work is reamed out and the engagingv bar released, substantially as set forth.
