Patented Sept. 23, 1924.
LESLIE MONROE PARKER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
GAIVIE DEVICE.
Application filed April 7, 19%. Serial No. 704,575.
T 0 (ZZZ whom it may concern:
"ie it known that I, LESLIE MONROE PARKER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain.
new and useful Improvements in. Game Devices, of which the following is a full, concise, and exact description.
' This invention relates to a device and an apparatus for use in games. It has for one object to provide a device which in one arrangement may beused during the playing of a game to retain the counters or men, or
forother purposes, and which in another arrangement may be used when the game is. not being played to store the necessary counters, men and other parts used with the game. Other objects 'will appear from time to time throughout the specification and claims! My invention is illustrated more or less diagrammatically in the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the rack devices in position for use when" playing with the parts slightly separated;
Figure 2 shows the parts in position for use when not playing with parts slightly separated Figure 3 is a cross section taken on line '33 of Figure 2 but with the parts in engagement v v Figure a is a view somewhat similar to Figure 1 showing a modified form of the invention with parts in engagement;
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 2 showing the parts of the modified form of Figure 4;
Figure 6 is a vertical cross section taken on, the line 6-6 of Figure 5;
Figure 7 is a cross section taken on line 7-7 of Figured.
Like parts are designated by like characters throughout.
A, A are similar parts of a two part rack member. They are preferably identical in size and shape and are provided with trough-like depressions or pockets A A which troughs are subdivided by partitions A These form a plurality of pockets. As shown only one of such partitions is inserted in each half of the rack, but more might be used and forcertain purposes they might be omitted.
Each portion of the rack is provided preferably along one side with an open trough or ledge B. Each of the racks is provided on one end with one or more engaging devices C. In the form shown, these devices are indicated as being snap engaging, con sisting primarily of a surrounding and a penetrating part, the penetrating part being preferably on one rack and the surrounding part being on another rack part and adapted when forced together to sepa-' rably join the parts of the rack. These engaging members are not described or shown in' detail as they might be of any type and their details form no part of the invention. It is suiiicient'for the invention that they constitute means for. separably fastening together'the two parts of the rack.
Similar engaging members C are mounted on the sides of each of the racks and these members will be identical in size and shape with the members shown on the ends of" the rack, although this is not essential. By means of these separable fasteners the rack parts may beseparably joined together side to side or end to end as shown in Figures l, 2 and 8.
As shown in Figures 4, 5,'and 6 the racks are identical with thoseabove described. A different attaching means is used however. At one end of one of the rack sections is mounted a tongue D. This tongue might be integral with the rack or it might be as here shown of metal fastened. to a rack which is preferably of wood. A mating groove D is formed in one end of the other rack part. This groove might be entirely of metal or might be merely carved in wood, or might constitute as here shown a metal sheathing on the inside of the groove which is on the inside of the rack.
On one side of one of the racks is mounted a tongue E It is preferably identical in size and shape with the tongue D shown in the end of the same rack. In the corresponding side of the other rack part is a groove E adapted to receive the tongue E. As shown the tongue is in each case onone member, that is'to say, I have shown one rack member having a tongue on its side and end, and I have shown the other rack member having a groove on its side and end. Of course, this is not an essential arrangement. One member might have a groove on its end and a tongue on its side, or vice versa.
I have shown in my invention two distinct methods of separably fastening together the two parts of the rack structure. These methods are shown only as illustrative of the general nature of the invention. Any method of separably fastening together the racks is within the contemplation of my invention. It will be obvious that many changes in size, shape and arrangement of parts might be made without departing materially from the spirit of my invention: and I wish, therefore, that my showing be taken as in a sense diagrammatic.
The folding rack members shown here with, when not in use might be put away in a box or case of any suitable type. Such case is shown in my pending application 682,388 filed December 24, 1923. It might also be assembled and fastened together without the case as shown in my pending application No. 691,356 filed February 8, 1924i. i
The use and operation of my invention are as follows In Figures 1 and 4 the device is shown open for use in playing. In that position the trough-like compartments will be used by the player to retain his counters, chips or other counting means. The open trough may be used by the player to hold the counters or men in his hand. lVhen the game is put away, the two sections of the trough are moved together as shown in Figures 2 and 5 and preferably fastened together by means of a hook in that position. Vhen thus moved the troughs form a'drawer. In the center is along troughlike section, and in this section preferably the counters or chips are put. The outside trough-like sections are then used for stor ing away the men and the folded drawer may be inserted in a box and the parts are thus stored away. By this means I provide a folding rack which in one position may be used as a drawer or container, and in another position used as a rack.
I claim:
