To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, ERNEST H. PEABODY,- a citizen of-the United States, and resident of Pelham Manor, in the county of livest-- chester, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furnace Fronts, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a front for .a furnace or boilerv and more particularly to 'that .type of boiler -used in -marine' -work known as the Scotch boiler. and has fbr its object to provide a front, including the air register, atomizer and other parts that will permit of easy accessibility .to the furnace. u
In my application No. 581,740 filed August 14, 1922, I disclose a'fuel burning apparatus which completely describes my air register. I use the same construction here with 'slight modifications which practice has shown to be of great improvement in the art.
In my improved device my air register is .secured to 'the outerwall of my furnace front by four butts and is adapted to swing on either side from the back plate by with-' drawing the two hinge pins on the side opposite the swing, The air reglster is provided with a male cone shaped surface to contact. with a similar female cone shaped surface on the back plate whereby the register will automatically be centered. with the opening intothe furnace.
The foregoing and other features of my invention will now be described in connection with the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification inwhich I have represented my furnace front in its preferred form, after which I shall point.

Figure 4 shows a diagrammatic arrangement of my registers assembled on the front of a Scotch boiler, in part section.
' In the carrying out of my invention I employ a casting 1 secured by the front bolts 2 of a furnace 3 which is provided with the usual' opening 4 formed by the Adapted to fit into the opening 4: I provide 1 a frusto conical ring 6 which is bolted to the ,rear plate of casting 1 by a plurality of bolts 7 and forms a support for special bricks supported bythe usual back plate.
Thisfrusto conical member 6 is provided with a conical portion 9 adapted to receive and contact with a similar conical portion 10 of the air register'll. My air register 11 is the sameas that disclosed in applica tion above referred to and requires no further description here, it being a frusto- 'conical air register with a plurality of segmental register doors 12' pivotally mounted with adjustable air controlling means 31.
The front plate 13 is extended to fill the opening 14 in the front of casting 1. Both this extended portion and the opening in the casting 1 into which it fits, are provided with interfitting flanges 15 so that when the register is in the position shown in-Figures 1' and 2 there is complete contact of'parts.
The front plate of the register and the front plate of the casting are provided with four butts 16 and four hinge pins 17 which securely hold the register in operating position and provide a means of swinging the register either to the right or the left by removing two of the'hinge'pins 17.
Hinged to the bottom of the frontplate I of the air register is the natural draft door' 18 provided with air adjusting chain 19 and means 20 for latching the door closed when forced draft is being used. The forced draft duct being indicated at 21.
It will be observed that the air which passes through the register doors 12, must come either through the naturaldraft door 18, or, the forced draft duct 21. As will be readily understood the forced draft duct 21-opens into an annular chamber surrounda plurality of such doors disposed around my register.
I WlSl). it distinctly understood that my furnace front herein described and illus trated is in the form in which I desire to construct it and that changes or variations may be made as may be convenient-or desirable without departing from the salient fea tures of my invention and I therefore intend the following claims to cover such modifications as naturally fall within the lines of invention.
I claim 1. A furnace front comprising a ring like member adapted to fit into an opening in a furnace, an annular air register supported by the front by hinge joints enabling it to swing to either side, and means carried by said register and engaging the ring like member to automatically center the air register when it is swung to operative position.
2. A furnace front comprising a ring like member mounted in an opening in a furnace, an air register mounted to swing to either side away. from said opening and when closed fitting within said ring like member, an annular chamber surrounding said register, and means for admitting air to said chamber.
3. A furnace front comprising a ring like member mounted in an opening in a furnace, an air register mounted to swing to either side away from said opening and when closed fitting within said ring like member, an annular chamber surrounding said register, and a natural draft door and a forced draft duct both communicating with said chamber.

a natural draft door and a forced draft duct member adapted to fit into an opening in a furnace and supply forced draft, a circular opening in the inner wall thereof, an air register attached to the outer wall, supporting a natural draft door and means for swinging the register and door outwards from said front to either side, said swinging means providing means for clamping door and register in operating condition when closed.
7. A furnace front comprising a hollow member mounted in an opening in a furnace, a circular opening in the inner wall thereof, an air register mounted to swing to the outer wall and away from said opening and when closed fitting within said circular opening, a natural draft door mounted to swing with the air register, and a forced draft duct both communicating with the hollow member.
